Magic! (or: "Help me decide on powersets")

Hi there

I've played 2 scrappers so far (DM/SR and MA/IN) and liked them both, however, I decided that I wanted to make 1 of each AT and get them to 50, all with the Magic origin.

Thus far, I've got an MC/EM Controller and a FIRE/EN Tanker.

I'm interested in doing something a bit different with my new scrapper and wondered what your suggestions were?

I like the look of DM/RE, however, a lot of people are playing those right now.

I thought about MA/DA, as I really like the MA powerset.

A friend played BS/DA and he was faceplant-a-licious.

So I am thinking either BS or MA and something else...suggestions?

BS/Regen is quite good (I prefer kat/regen, but people seem to like the extra damage from a bigger sword). Broadsword also gives you the opportunity to play a really dumb ox of a character, if you feel so inclined.

Three scrappers and you haven't rolled a regen yet??!?
(seriously, you need to try it... it's an amazing set and works very differently to the others)

I have a 40 Spines/DA scrapper at the moment, with a magic origin. I've found that it's a superb PvE set, but takes ages to become "good" and isn't that great a set to solo with. It's main downfall is endurance consumption, it gobbles endurance- even heavily slotted with Endreds I still need to take care with my power usage whenever I'm not speedboosted or AM'ed.

/Dark was a real struggle till 30 or so, it got a lot better with Oppressive Gloom at 35 and is fantastic now that I've everything well-slotted... it's currently exceptionally good on teams, outperforming my Katana/Regen by a long way. I can only see it getting better once I pick up Conserve Power and Focussed Accuracy.

/Dark Pros: Great in Teams, no resistance gaps, outperforms every other secondary once fully slotted up.
/Dark Cons: takes AGES to slot everything in order to get that good. Not as good solo. Gobbles Endurance.

If I was going /dark again then I'd be very tempted to go Dark/ too, purely for dark consumption.

If I was looking at a high endurance primary like Broadsword, I'd probably go /regen. No endurance problems, ever. Very good solo, quick to hit peak performance and still *almost* as good as /dark in later levels (better solo, but not nearly as good when teamed!).

BS/REGEN does say "Magic sword" so that would be thematic.

Gonna have a think

Thanks!

Well I have this thing where I steer clear of what's "In" I need my individuality! Don't give me your hate crimes! :P

Anyway, Broadsword and Regen sounds good. I might get the Mass Fear power from the Presence pool, 'cause I've been interested in that for a while.

That could represent some magic spells.

One of my old toons on union is a BS/Regen normal looking dude with a 'magic sword' which causes the regen abilities.. ^^

*nod* My 50 is a magic, kat/regen. He started out as a priest of The Morrigan, Celtic goddess of War and Battlefields. Her 'totem' animal was the raven or carrion crow, so he became War Crow. His sword wasn't magic, he was a magician, but his sword "has been revealed to be not entirely normal," over time.

You can get really outlandish with Magic origin.

I did BS/DA with my Magic scrapper (also outlandish backstory involving celtic war goddesses... it always fits nicely). She was quite hard going till Stamina, but once i hit Stamina and then SOs she's been immense fun, being able to both mookinate and dish out immense amounts of ST damage. Though BS/DA, or indeed any DA benifits most from large teams (therefore large mobs)

And thats the core of the issue really...

Teaming more? Lots of big mobs?

Dark Armour is a winner!
Spines is a winner!

Solo more? Small groups?

MA is a winner!
Regen is a winner?

Invun, SR, and most of the other scrapper sets are fairly balanced between the two; although scrappers as an AT are strong solo and less good in big teams.

I did MA/Regen and found out it was good in PvE but not top notch in PvP.

I dont mind scrappers becoming good later on simply because of the amount of time spent playing them during the different level ranges. More time is spent on later content or even at 50 with me.

My Broadsword/Regen was me avoiding Broadsword/Invuln but i am most certainly happy with her because although she is squishie inside a herded group she is more easily given power pools. Fitness pool is not so much of a must have for a start, opening up other options more. Resilience and tough make things a bit better. I took stealth to stack with ss to position better before using an opening pbaoe or pbaoe from a good point as a tank moves in.

Well seductress, you really did 2 great scrappers, MA/INV is the most accurate scrapper that can be created and DM/SR the hardest one to hit. After my DM/SR I'm doing a Katana/Inv and I find it's great fun. I am planning a BS/DA but I think I need to know more before going DA.
I would suggest you definitely the Katana/Invulnerability if you want to try a new scrapper.
