Personally, I've made my own SG, and with only me, my brother and between 1-2 other people.. We've earned nearly 3-4 mil Pres in about 7-8 months..

You just need patience..and to make sure you're in SG mode always...Especially after lvl 35...

I have a SG with me, 2 friends from work ( one of which never plays and the other started this week ) and have managed to get a functional mini base at long last!

using an oversight centre, a teleport room and the second smallest workshop, I've finally got storage, a mini workshop and a teleporter ( set to eden for a shortcut to raids ) and I at first really hated the pricing for base items.

But, on my own, in about 3 weeks ( and I havn't been playing non stop on one character mind you ) I got this up and running and I'm really chuffed, ok to start with the base will look empty ( focus on the things you NEED rather than decorative items ) but it comes together quickly!

also, make use of the supergroup badge system, you really need to get stuck in ( in SG mode ) to unlock a few items such as the teleporter etc, which takes a while, but dont give up!!!

I'm seriously considering trying to build myself a solo base for all my alts. In fact, not so much a base, but a store room. I would like somewhere to store enhancements and insps, and once I9 arrives; salvage and recipies.

I'm not too fussed about having a medibay or teleports etc (may add them later) but would like to get a small base up and running with storage facilities and maybe a workbench.

How much trouble will this be (time and effort)?
What basic base components (oversight center etc) will I need to get a base to this level?

For a store room you can start off with an oversight centre, that gives you the ability to place a few storage items. The enhancement storage can hold 100 items, whereas the salvage shows as 999 items and they are semi-sensibly priced.

Solo, you're going to have to go nuts with combat, my main character gets on average 30 prestige per defeated same level enemy, with 350 ( approx ) bonus for completing missions.

I got lazy and ( drunkenly ) converted several million influence across as well and now have an oversight centre, teleport bay and a small workshop as well.

viability wise, for the minimum cost against use, go for a small workshop as you can put 1 storage in it and youll get it faster than an oversight centre

Getting a basic little palce up and running doesn't take too much effort - play only in SG mdoe for a few weeks and you should earn enough to start building the essentials.

I'll be adding a lot of my alts into the sg to begin with so I should be able to get at least 100k for starters. Then if I play with my 50 for a bit I figure it shouldn't take long long.

Any tips on other basics; such as what plot size I should go for, how many rooms etc. Also, do storage items require power?

The starting plot size will easily be a big enough one to start with.
The number of rooms depends on what you want to do with your base - if you're looking to expand, then you'll need separate Control and Power rooms, as the Oversight Center can't provide the Control and Power you'll need for a larger base.
Storage items don't need Power or Control.

start up with the Oversight Centre and the basic 50k rooms, when you have enough and want to upgrade, do so in steps and with extra prestige to spare just in case. I'm not entirely sure the base editer can handle the contents of the containers very well...

Note that you can always delete items and rooms and get the same amount of prestige back that you spent. You can't really do anything irrepaiarble unless you delete containers with something in them. Or salvage-built items in which case you lose the salvage. However, theres an awful lot of experimenting you can do cause prestige is not being lost.

Always try to use the smallest plot available to cut back on rent. The starting plot should get you far. Usually the update to next plot is a big undertaking and requires lot of prestige gathering first.

As for the rooms, oversight centre at first, fit everything that you want and can in there first. After that you may need to work on getting real generator and control rooms for more energy/control and so on. BAse building happens in steps as you get enough prestige for next update.
