I'm fairly sure that the main attraction of Mr. Poo is for soloing, although he's as thick as his namesake he can quite happily pull aggro from you when you're mezzled.
However about the only thing he brings to the table in teams with a dedicated tanker is piddly damage output and a VERY heavy resistance to Psionic damage. I've seen him used to "tank" purple carnie mobs and the Psi CW king before, though Phantom Army generally work much better.
This is from a melee toon/tanker viewpoint btw: Currently I've only one support toon at 50 and it's a Defender.
My advice is get rid of him. I have a lvl 50 earth/emp troller and i had mr. Poo for a good 10 lvls before i just had to bite the bullet and put the poor sod out of his misery. I found him next to useless both on teams and solo...which is still excessively painful and pointless on an earth/emp pet or no pet. Think i was able to get the rez, or possibly regen aura in his place, FAR more useful.

well...he has the name Mr. Poo for a reason 
Personally don't like him much other than to take alphastrikes and tanking psi AVs (which he does very well).
You don't need him other than if you wish to solo once in a while but he's still nice to have for the above reasons.

I was going to respec out of it myself - didn't get the chance though.
But then I got my Lightning Storm recently, and the extra damage from Poo certainly helps. However I was gonna get rid of him for exactly the same reasons as you - I rarely summon him on teams because we usually have a tank, but also because he just pisses around. 
I wouldn't say he's a necessity.

Hi all
Ok, I'm a currently lvl35 earth/empathy controller, primarily PvE. I've spent much of the last few months trying my best not to lvl, waiting for some friends to catch up. So even though I've only had Animated Stone for a couple of lvls, it feels like I've had him for a long while. This means I understand the uses of my pet, and his limitations.
However, much of that time has also been spent exemping to between lvl25-30, which means I've gone without him for quite a while. Now that my friends have caught up to my lvl, and I'm starting to use him again, I've begun to wonder whether he is really worth the slots.
I'm a team oriented player, I never solo - unless I'm providing empath support to low lvls in the Hollows. What I'm trying to say is, my team always has a tank and always has damage dealers. Given my pet's slow recharge and often-stupid behaviour (ie running away instead of attacking mobs) I wonder whether it is time to say good-bye and respec him out.
I'd like to hear from higher lvl earth trollers on how long they kept him and whether they felt the tradeoff was worth keeping him or whether they eventually specced him out.
