Gauntlet and aura only will still be poo, due to AI, the AVs attacks and different team make ups. Taunt adds flexibility. If you dont have it, you cant guarantee aggro consolidation against any AV in any given situation with any given team versus any effect and so gauntlet and aura only will always be poo.
Castle also says "most of the fight" if thats good enough for you then well what can i say....for shame!!!
He will honor his words; he will definitely carry out his actions. What he promises he will fulfill. He does not care about his bodily self, putting his life and death aside to come forward for another's troubled besiegement. He does not boast about his ability, or shamelessly extol his own virtues. - Sima Qian.

The thing is, with AV fights you have to look at the weakest chain in the link. Even if you can consolidate aggro 95% of the time its pretty poo, because a stray attack on a defender or blaster can pretty much floor them.
To a degree, you are only as good as your weakest link.
However, this sounds a pretty fair balance. Tauntless tanking is now viable, but not desirable. Which is about right to me.

[/ QUOTE ]On that I agree, we shouldn't be able to hold AV aggro 100% reliably, but we should have a good chance to hold it, which this offers.

If i was to read that as 99.9% of the time for everyone, i'll find it highly optimistic.

If you have an aura on and are constantly attacking, there is a virtual certainty that you will be able to grab and maintain aggro on an AV or GM within a couple seconds of engaging.
[/ QUOTE ]
What part of "virtual certainty" is confusing you?
Honestly, I would not consider dropping taunt. I find it far too useful a power when I'm slowed, -jumped or just plain unable to punch a newly-aggroed void in the head before it takes a liking to our kheldian.
I like to be able to completely lock down my aggro control, and I regularly team with PUGs who don't know when to NOT use Freezing Rain or Rain of Fire. Therefore I need taunt because without it complete idiots can and will cause team faceplants (they can still cause these when I'm spamming taunt... but it gets much harder!)
But it's going to be VIABLE after the changes to tank an AV without taunt. I wouldn't try main-tanking a full missions worth of mobs on an 8-man PUG team without it, but keeping aggro from an AV should be easy.
I read virtual as virtual, existing or resulting in essence or effect but not in actual fact.
Diabolique phases and buggers off, taunt duration of gauntlet and aura as small as they are, who will she remember? what key member will she go for next? Can all tanks keep up and keep hitting her?
Different AVs may have higher resist partially due to levels but then Nem Rex may have alot more due to leaderships and ignore you.
Rage crashes only affecting self was your gauntletting good enough?
You had to hibernate the chain damage was lucky and hurt, was gauntlet good?
OMG you have run out of end what then? Damn Neuron for being so end draining especially up close... oh and that sentinal ouch...
LVL 52 Giovanna Scaldi has who she wants to hit gauntletting her, the rest of the team up close as well.
Psychic Wail!! Total healthpoints worth of psionic damage to any tanker. Lights out team too.
You are either -rechgd, -acc, -end, placated, -tohit or feared, did you happen to pack the right defender for the job? Are they still standing, did they share the cone and aoe meant for just you and couldnt take it? did you get the right ftw team? or just happen to join one?
The best thing to not do is assume that what will be for one tank will be for all neither and taunt being autohit, requiring no end use, having very useful range, of great duration compared to all others makes you flexible.
Tanks dont tank without ample taunt duration, they also need to be not only about the cones, aoes, pbaoes of the team but of the enemy as well.
Ranged taunt is the most heroic power in the attack sets and is what defines you imo.
Thing is with me i dont look to pack a certain defender in a team to make up for my weaknesses. I dont think its fair to be fussy and i also prefer a no defeat to it all. Defeated team mate = -dps and to not care if someone gets hurt isnt the "if ya want to get to my friend ya have to come through me!" attitude.

I will always consider tanks with taunt > tanks without taunt.
Thats not criteria for teaming with me, but still.

agreed, afterall taunt is autohit and hits 5 foes.
thats not to say tauntless tanks are bad at holding aggro. they just are not as good.

Some interesting discussion in this thread on the US forums including a more detailed explanation from Castle on how it works.
