So anyway, a question about agro and taunting etc. I duo my ice/ice tank with a friends fire/fire blaster. I have to maintain agro through the massive AoE damage he pumps out. Is it possible to override a tanks taunt aura (slotted with a couple of taunt durations) by massively outdamaging them? Can they steal agro even through taunt?
[/ QUOTE ]There are two effects, Taunt and 'hate'. Attacking and damage generates hate, and hate is ALWAYS overridden by any existing taunt effects. Thus, it is impossible (When things are working right) to pull aggro from a foe (Not AV/GM) next to a tank (who has their aura on) with damage. To override taunt, you need to apply a taunt effect with twice the duration of the existing taunt.
Ice tankers are fairly notorious for being able to hold aggro very solidly.
Something about very fast ticks on Chilling Embrace...
I don't think you'll have a problem.
Taunt will still be useful, just not a necessity.
@MaX: I know you qualified that by saying "when things are working right" but IIRC Blazing Aura, Mud Pots and Invincibility have longer periods between taunt "ticks". You might need taunt duration SOs in them to completely hold aggro between ticks when you're fighting purples.
oh i think i see. Tanks are the one AT i've no previous experience with but you hear alot about tanks not being proper tanks without taunt etc. That combined with the fact i have ALOT of trouble keeping agro last night with just CE i figured i was just missing taunt. I did notice it was just the Lts though, i had the minions complete attention, so must be that bug.
Might still keep taunt anyway, i can see her turning into a pure 'tank' build rather than any kind of scranker.

Ahh yes...
I was forgetting that we're all each meant to be just about a match for "3 even level minions"...
meh i'd say 2 here.

That helps a little. The real factors however are that the CE ticks are autohit and have a large radius. They're also usually backed up with Icicles. Ice tanks are the dons of aggro-holding.
What MaX said regarding the myth of pulling aggro off a tank with damage. One of those popular myths things that, when cited, always displays a certain ignorance about the Tanker AT (right up there alongside Blaster secondary immobilises being useless, especially Web Grenade).
Tanker section seems REALLY quiet and i'm quite suprised i don't see a thread about the problems with taunt aura's atm. I found out too late on my lowbie tank and ended up taking taunt earlier than i wanted because i thought i was just [censored] at tanking

I really should know having played a fire/fire to 50 but tbh i was concentrating on myself and prolly didn't notice the lengths our tank went to to keep me safe
Would CE, icicles, ice patch and the odd attack be enough to keep the agro in this duo or is taunt a necessity? Assuming of course the current problemis resolved soon.
