Advice for a new Defender.

Hi Guys

After my recent attempt at Scrapping thought i'd turn my hand to Defending for a change of pace.

I do have a Kin/Rad at the mo who's not seen the light of day in months so not loooking for either of these sets.
I do like the look and sound of Storm but not sure what might complement that best?

My play is for PvE only and as a Defender would aim to be teaming as much as poss to get the best out of the sets but do quite like to solo now and then. Is this practical with Storm , found it not too bad on Kin/Rad but a tad slow.

Was hoping for something a little unusual power set combo wise if such a thing exists these days

Any words of wisdom and advice as usual greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Kinetics slow? I love kinetics cos it makes the team power through missions with the added damage possible, the speed boosts etc, but if you don't like Kinetics, then perhaps Forcefield might be to your choice? It's really the opposite to Kinetics, the ultimate buff and forget powerset.

I read that as Kin being slow for solo play at lower levels (ie. before Transference & Fulcrum Shift).

I pretty much solo'd from 1-10 and I thought it pretty good, With the added damage from Siphon power and the fast recharge of Neutrino bolt giving decent damage at low levels you can become quite the damage dealer at low levels.

I think he problem is that he's coming from a scrapper viewpoint. Indeed, a level 10 defender will not solo as fast as a level 50 scrapper.

If you found a kin slow, storm will certainly be no faster. It's all about the tactics. I'd rely on teams for your main XP gain, save the soloing for the fun. I like Storm/Energy, myself, since the colour fits well and the uberknockback makes for controller-style play.

If you want unusual, go for Sonic/Anything.

You do know that you can't select two Buff/DeBuff sets, right?

But Sonic/Archery might be a rare combo.

Coming from a Scrapper background myself, I can see why Kinetics might feel a bit strange to you. You're used to dealing out damage and sets like Kinetic, Force Field and Empathy involve a fair amount of buffing other players, at the expense of attacking.

The Defender sets that don't involve a lot of player buffing may be better suited to you, such as Dark, Storm or TA.

I would recommend trying each of these three and experiment to find the one that suits you.

I'm currently levelling a Dark/Dark, which has a very offensive feel to it. Dark with any secondary would be a good choice really.

I've also teamed a lot with good Storm Defenders and have been very impressed with the offensive aspects of this set and the sheer chaos it causes to the Mobs

When I get my current Def to 50, I'm going to have a look at Storm/Electric.

Bottom line is that any Def set, played well, can be highly effective. It's just that some are more offensive in nature, which may suit a Scrapper mentality - like mine

TA/Sonic Blast is probably what he meant. Evil resistance debuffage & good single target damage (which is good for soloing). And Sonics will fire up the oil slick.

I've found Kinetics/Elec very slow to solo. Pretty safe, the heal is so powerful. But it takes ages to defeat things, especially pre-32.

And post-32. To get decent damage out of fulcrum you need lots of mobs and you just don't have the damage mitigation to stand in melee range of 10 mobs and live. You can faceplant in one combat round and even transfusion isn't enough. Just a single disorient attack from a minion can wipe you. Dial down the number of mobs to something more manageable and you're looking at the mighty fulcrum shift struggling to boost your damage to the same levels as freezing rain, tar patch or enervating field. I found kin miserable to solo, especially with the non stop buffing of yourself every few seconds. What a pain in the backside.

EDIT: Sorry that sounded overly negative so I should just stress that it was all about solo. Couple Kin with just one other person with damage mitigation and it's outrageously good.

If you take the Psychic Mastery pool and take Mass Hypnosis, large groups become something less of a problem, especially as the Siphons and FS don't wake them up
