Work in Progress.
It looks really, really good so far, and oh my goodness, what I wouldn't give to have had my living room like that when I was a kid.
On the coloured picture, if you're apt at drawing skies, I'd recommend trying to do so, as the photoed sky there detracts from the drawing, though that's just my opinion of course.
Thank-you Max!, most kind, re;the sky - yes I just dropped a sample in to get an idea of what a sky would look like.
Seeing as though the whole exercise is to test my non-reliance on existing imagery, I will be drawing the sky.
The coloured version is just a very very basic test of applying some kind of colour to the piece.
Really, really cool
I think if I could build similar city in my living room, it would take lot of convincing to get permission from the family to clear it out.
The picture, very cool as well. I think you go the perspective great there, so your efforts were worth it
Blackdove
Absolutely fantastic!
LOVE the lineart (the perspective is largely spot on - only quibble would be the perspective on the rounded tower block on the left at the bottom of the street) - superb artwork. Which app did you use for the lineart?
Thankyou Sar
I used Right-Hand V.1, its an old app but has served me well in the past.
Largely Staedler Pigment Liners of various widths on Comic Board paper.
Goldline or Windsor and Newton Bristol Board Extra smooth surface drawing pads. 250gsm.
I keep a little toe tipped in the ancient arts as well as trying to keep up with Photoshop/painter.
I would say my drawings are usually a fusion of the two as (in my opinion) there is still a mysterious 'X' factor the drawing gains in doing the lineart on paper first.

Mummy, you're a genius*. The line art is fantastic and I love the coloured version. Can't wait to see what springs up from all of this!
The Cardboard City is wonderful too. Hope you did a Godzilla on it when you were done
*an insane genius but a genius nonetheless
Thankyou Carnifax,
........and yes an unintentional almost comedic 'Godzilla' was done on the Metropolis, but not by me but by a hapless family member and not before i had finished with the photography either! - I had to rebuild in an effort not unlike rebuilding Faultline lol *grrrrr
...and insane?...Yes , believe me the thought crossed my mind more than once believe you me - still does!.
wauw - going from cardboard city to that illustration is a huuuuuge leap and i love the style of that illustration - very nice work
that is unbelievably awesome ^^
mummy, im almost afraid to say this but...you have too much time on your hands, the first time i looked at the metropolis in your lounge i thaught it was an actual city!!

Amazing work as always Mum x
I'm spending all of tomorrow morning making a cardboard city tomorrow... I'm going to leave it standing when I go to work, so I have something to look forward to (smashing!) when I get home!!!
PS- LOL love the little railway you built as well lol!!
PPS !!! OMG !!! 100 POSTS !!! !!! !!! OMG !!!
Ok, thought you'd like to see some work in progress.
Actually this post is not so much about the half finished artwork I am about to show you, but in actual fact the bizarre way I got round the problem.
I am attempting (In a foolhardy way of challenging myself) to do an animated teaser trailer - the kind of thing everyone is watching with the Spidey 3 trailer, bursts of fading second long animations and CoH illustrations end to end.
I need to do approximately 70 of these to do for the sequence I have in mind. I think the majority of the shots will be Illustration but several key shots I am hoping to animate to a limited degree.
Anyway, So i decide i should challenge myself. Being a designer i thought i should try a little bit more Illustration as a core skill as in my opinion designers get very lazy relying on others for images.
I am a fan of Genndy (CloneWars/Samurai Jack)Tartovsky, Alex Ross, Jonaro Kindred and the Marvel comicbooks like Spiderman New Avengers and X-men Phoenix Endsong and was feeling a bit inspired.
Anyway so I put pen to paper on what basically is going to be my first ever comicstrip art as I have the sequence of frames all planned out.
I start out with frame 4 (a street scene downtown somewhere like Talos Island) because it is a complicated one and I needed to see if I was capable of drawing it basically.
Of course Mummy isn't satified with NORMAL perspective....
oOooh Noooooo! - I insist on (4)multi point fish-eye perspective for my first comic Illustration *doh .
With the scene in my head i sat down evening after evening tearing my hair out through frustration trying to draw this thing, and it just not looking right time after time, slowly disappearing under a sea of scrumpled up paper and tired of my head spinning trying to work it out i took a leaf out of Alex Ross' book. Use still life to help you!.
If my minds eye couldn't quite handle all the perspective calculations....
If in short.... I couldn't go to the Metropolis - then the Metropolis was bloomin well going to come to me.
Ask permission before doing this boys and girls,
Before you decide to turn.....
your
Lounge
into
a
Metropolis
Family were not impressed they couldn't watch tv that evening because a cardboard City had sprung up out of nowhere
Anyway, after taking lots of photos,it did help with the perpective while drawing so now i have a load of photographic reference to help me if i get stuck.
Be gentle Littleones - Its my first attempt at a comic-book style Illustration so its still very rough.
Downtown:
The Lineart
Filling in basic basic colour and dropping in a sample sky to get an idea about lighting.
So what do you think?, should i continue...or has Mummy bitten off more than she can chew?
