Base Rent and problems
Im afraid not. Only those the overlord has given permission to can pay rent. You just have to wait for one of them to come online and pay it (if they have funds to do so).
If none of the leaders come online you have to wait for the auto demotion to kick in until it makes one of the actives leader (default is 15 days inactivity and it demote leader).

if your leaders have been inactive for over 15 days without a message somewhere saying they wont be about and the auto demote option has been changed you can contact suport to have the rent payed however its hit and miss some of them wil do it np others will fob you off about it my advice send bridger or rockjaw an email as well as an ingame petition for assistance if your lucky they will be able to help you out

Will the auto-demotion not just promote the next highest rank member, so if the second in command is absent also you just get a loop between the two?
as far as i know never seen it in action myself but the auto demotion is suposed to move down the ranks in order till it eventuly finds somebody of a rank thats been active if your the bottom rank and everybody above you in the group is gone it may take a while

I'm not sure it works like that.
At one stage we had several co-leaders in our villain SG (only two of us left as co-leaders now) but we've kept lots of inactive people on the roster (some have been inactive for almost 4 months now, but they're real-life friends and have said they may come back one day so we leave them there - been worth it for when the Devs gave out the SG prestige bonus, if nothing else). We have a 45 day auto-demotion and the only rank that has ever been auto-demoted is the very top rank (the leader one) - none of the lower ranks has ever been auto-demoted. We even have one of the original co-leader's characters that hasn't been played for 9 months yet still has the second rank, the one just below leader.
Also a friend and I created some heroes on Defiant ages ago and he made an SG, and we designated a few of his characters and a few of my characters as leaders (top rank), but then we didn't play there for months - and we didn't change the default 15 day auto-demote period. Over Halloween I used one of my Defiant Heroes for Trick-or-Treating (because we do plan to use our heroes after I8 and I wanted the bonus costume slots) and every single character in the SG had been auto-demoted to the second rank EXCEPT the character that my friend used to create the SG.
So I have a feeling auto-demotion only works on the top rank (because you can't demote SG leaders any other way), and will never auto-demote the last leader left (and/or the original founder). And judging by our Defiant Hero SG the game won't auto-promote either (otherwise my Trick-or-Treat character would surely have been auto-promoted as soon as I logged in).
All I know on the matter is that there was a while during which I didn't play my main, Gravecall, and as such he got demoted to the 2nd highest rank, while one of my others, who was previously of the lowest rank got promoted to the highest rank (was alone in the SG at that time so all my alts were of the lowest rank). Didn't play that char for a while and he got demoted while Gravecall got re-promoted to the highest rank. So this leaves me thinking that it will alway promote the person with the next highest rank to leader, so if none of the people with the second highest rank are still active it will just keep cycling them all as leader, never even glancing at those lower down the command chain.
Okay, and here's my theory on how it works:
once the pre-set time (default is 15 days) has expired without the SG leader logging in, the next person that logs in gets made leader automatically.
Sorry if that's what one of you was trying to say anyway and I didn't get it (but if you did, I used less words )

In that case my trick-or-treating scrapper should have been made leader of my hero-side SG, but he wasn't.
AFAIK if there is NO ONE at the highest rank then the next person who logs in gets auto-promoted. However, this rarely happens because it seems the auto-demotion doesn't always work when you get down to the SG founder.
Hmm... well, that's why it's only a theory and not necessarily the hard truth
Although on the few occasions that I came upon this feature, that is how it worked for me.

Yeah it is slightly buggy but should start working sooner or later.. I remember a coalition SG I know of had no-one at the highest rank for a short period of time but then the game kicked one person up. It was just slightly delayed.
Lets all agree that it's just totally bugged and user-unfriendly
In other words just like 99% of everything else to do with bases
I wonder if maybe Cryptic could get into touch with EA/Maxis and swipe "The Sims" editing system... While i'm not a fan of the game at least it's user friendly...

actually, the auto-demotion works on joined status.. the highest ranked char the has been in the SG for the longest time will get promoted.. not sure if it checks activity on thoose and skip them, or u have to wait 15 days each tho
I am quite a vain person, I join SG's because of their name, aswell as the online community spirit.
My SG on CoV (defiant) is now very inactive. I like the name (Nightbreed) so don't want to leave. My problem is this, Our base rent was due on 02/10/06.... and I am not high enough to pay it, so it has been shut down. Is there any way of getting around this, except for sending an email to the highest ranked members. Any suggestions?
