Zorro (total cost about £20 as it is a "highway man" costume and then a plastic sword)
Indiana Jones circa £30 look in charity shops for the hat and the coat - wip is fairly easy to find try your local market.
most comic toons have a professional costume done which you could hire.
Wolverine t shirt, jeans leather jacket and big hair (could be a wig)
Robin hood - green t [censored], green tights kids archery set.
have a look at you local party shops and you will get an idea.
like the Indy option, forgot about him, nice keep em coming, alos forgot to mention in main post that this party will be hosted in a pub (where else ) so all ideas must be condusive of drinking vast amounts of alcohol. Nothing to big that obstructs me from getting to the bar .

Your party shop idea, was also my first idea but looking around in the shop i found the costumes to look very cheap, tacky and very cheesey, and the good ones only come in one size x-large which makes em look terrible on me.
What i'm really looking for is to look the part and also look good at the same time, thats why i'm liking your Indy suggestion.

Ok, how about this for an idea.
A Jedi!
It's an easy costume to make (I did one for a friends star-wars themed birthday) and there are TONES of tutorials on the net about how to make them. Plus, they don't need to be that involved to look alright.
It cost me £15 and a night of sewing for the complete getup and you can get Lightsaber's for around £15 as well IIRC.
This is the tutorial I used but I modified it slightly using ideas from eHow.com and The Padawan's Guide
Never let it be said that I don't do my research 
Check local "costume-stores" for cheap cossies, I got a cheap superman-cossie at a store in sweden.
And a tip!
Since it's a pub and there will be beer, don't buy a "full body"-costume.. Going to the bathroom would mean undressing everything! (been there, done that)
Thought of being a jedi, but have an idea that i wouldn't be the only one with the same idea, although i want a popular based character i don't really want to turn up to the party and see about 5 blokes in the same costume (especially if there costumes were better than mine , I'd feel like a right noob).

if thats you in the supes cos in your avatar that's pretty damn cool , coz the supes costumes in my area suck big time, they look a bit out of date and remind of the batman pants i had when i was 5

Hi guys on October 7th I have been invited to a birthday party, and guess what the theme is, Heroes and Villians.

Now i am posting here because i am struggling with limited brain power i have, to come up with a suitable costume and character to go as please can you help me.
My criteria is as followed:-
I am 31 year old (but look young for my age
I am Male (so no Barberella's, Elvira's or Vamperella's pls).
I have limited creative skills (so please keep props or anything latex based to a minimum).
Total funds i wish to invest would be around £50 (as will most prob be the only time i will wear this).
I am 5' 11 in height and weigh around 11 stone (honestly
Please use quite popular based character's as would like to turn up with people knowing who i am suppose to be.
So guys please please please help me on this matter coz all i have at the moment is sticking loads of bandages round my head and going as the invisible man.
Please do not post just names of characters who i should go as, i need ideas on how to throw costume and props into it as well.
