My First Ever Picture: The Creature

I've not drawn before. I always wanted to try but never got into it in school. It was one of the few things I just wasn't any good at. Well inspired by the new artists and how they are getting on I thought I would try again and I'd got a few books from earlier in my life (all untouched) and over christmas I picked up a copy of 'How to Draw Anything' by Mark Linley.

I've only done the first tutorial thing in it so this isn't great but I kind of wanted to show off what I've done aready.

The Subject:
Some of you will have read my story 'The Creature'. It's still not finished (that is my next job) but this is my imagnining of the creature.

I would be most greatful of any comments or advice that anyone can give me. I'm looking forward to doing some more drawing soon.

2 things come to mind:
-Correct me if I'm wrong but you went straight with the pen on the paper?
-You ran out of paper space
If I am wrong, well the following might not be as relevant.

Remember what was said here.
The main outcome of that thread was to use basic shapes to build human like characters.

Even though I don't know what this creature is made from, it still has legs and arms so I'm going to go ahead and assume that it's got a humanoid-type body and therefor a spine.

Now a creature being a creature, you got all the artistic license you want to go crazy in its shape and form. But the humanoid-type body laws still applies here.
Example:
the shoulders: both shoulders are conected and should react to one another. Here, in your picture, they are at same level whereas if the shoulder in the foreground is in a lower position, the shoulder in the background should be higher.

Hmm.. I think I might be getting ahead of myself again here.

To make it shorter:
Use the logic of basic shapes as a guide for your drawings with pencil first.
Quick draw-over-ish.

Having said all that, I'm still in awe at one of the most important part of the whole process: imagination. You seem to have lots.

Um, no actually. I started with pencil and knew that I wanted the page to be the frame and that the whole wouldn't fit within those bounds.

Thanks for the advice there. I'm trying to do that is a few studies I'm doing at the moment. Oh, and I've not forgotten about learning more traditional techniques either.

Wow, thanks. I wasn't expecting anything like that from my first drawing.

Np, i love its simplicity, you should try adding some colour, or more heavy shading, it would increase its depth greately
