How do you RP?
Well, It's quite easy. Just say and do what you think your character would do. For example, if you own a large brooding gothic tank, it may be OOC (Or not, depending on the view) if made a cheerful comment and did a random emote. Instead, act like a Large Cheerless Slab of meat who likes smacking things. Rawr.
Oh, and most OOC comments and actions are typed in this format (()) though must of us use GGOOC or CTOOC channels for that sort of stuff.

I guess I was also a bit curious as to how welcomed a new face at GG would be. From reading the forums for a while, I get the impression that most of the regular GG crowd know each other fairly well, is it cliquey?

I'd say it would be like anyone new turning up to a group of people who are familiar with each other. Just turn up and say hello. I'm not a regular myself (too many RL commitments...) but each time I have turned up people have been welcoming and friendly even though I must confess I was intimidated too in the beginning.

Thats the word, intimidated.
Just a thought, but wouldn't it be a good idea to post the contents of the RP FAQ on these boards and get it stickied? I suppose Im just worried about showing up and not knowing what to do and getting one of 'those' reputations
First of all, welcome!
I'm pretty new to RP myself - start back in March by turning up to GG through curiosity and being dragged over to the statue by RC. *shakes fist melodramatically*
As for the RP Guide RC links to, the unfortunate thing is that such a guide - or any guide of that nature, really - is going to be controversial. There will be things in it that some or even many would disagree with as it represents one way of roleplaying, not -the- way to roleplay, if you follow me. Best not to do so in the long run, IMO.
As for intimidation, I can most certainly empathise. I was nearly sweating each of the first nights I came along and was truly scared of messing up. But... I kept coming back and, as you do so, it gets a little easier. That said, of course, I'm still intimidated by the long-term GGers.
Regardless, I would recommend you come along to either the GG meet or the newly started Mercy Island Clocktower meet in CoV (10pm-ish). I'm there most evenings and - as Ana Firebrand, at least - make an effort to say hello to anyone I see.
And don't forget: there's no such thing a silly question if you don't know the answer so fire a tell to me if there's anything you want to ask.
Again, welcome and have fun!
You've never said hello to poor little Molok :P

Edited to add emphasis.
Plus, once I get home, I'll dig out the logs cause I'm 70% sure Ana's talked to Molok before but I shall find out for certain - and edit this post rather than completely hijacking this thread...
And, if I'm wrong (30% chance and all ), I'll hunt him down and shake his hand.
Edit: Well, turns out I was wrong. Exchanged tells briefly but it doesn't look like Ana ever got a chance to say hello. Prepare to be hunted!
just do what i did turn up, and see what happens, i mean what could go worng after all *flash back to his first night, just standing there and noone talking to him at ALL!* ah well... maybe..
P.S. im on normally on as Drade.
Number one problem will to be aknowledged, this happens in all RP places and not just CoH. We go in, we try to chat with someone and get no answer as they keep talking with someone else.
Very disheartening.
A tip about that (especially if playing the RP game recently) is to *not* make a brooding, dark, loner type. Yes, comics and movies make it seem 'cool', but in practice what we obtain is a character who stays apart from the others and in silence.
For the most while this kind of character will not be interacted since there is little interaction coming. Danger of trying to RP a lone wolf.
This might not be as much of a problem once, a) having more RP time under the belt, which allows more creativity in overcoming it, or b) having already a few RP friends which can be coaxed to come speak and interact with said loner.
Another tip I'd recomend is to *not* spring from yon's momma womb already a supah-hero, master of all known martial arts and with laser beams from the eyes. A level 1 is a level 1 and it can, and is, quite fun to be the newbie, the rookie who is still trying to control his basic powers and stopping muggings.
This is a good ice breaker to start RP In My Opinion.
A last tip is to not be shy (this one is harder and it took a considerable time for me to overcome). Talking is good, talk a lot, it helps.
Some people ask why my RP character, Mini Decoy, speaks so much. Well, I've figured that there's no use having a description, a quirk (be it of speech, or how someone RPs limping, or a fear of something that is shown), if no one mentions it and offers a 'hook'.
Hooks are what keep conversations and RP flowing. Someone says something and offers a hook, reply to what was said and offer a hook. The one speaking with takes the hook and replies to it. This keeps a conversation going instead of degenerating into 'Hmm.. Yeah.. So...'
Someone with an eye patch for example. The character might have a whole story behind it all prepared up, but if no one asks, then the story stays bottled up.
Of course there's little danger of that happening with Mini around ^^
Hi! Thanks for your interest in RP. Everything everyone's already said is spot on.
I'd like to relate a little tale from my own RP history...
One day, I thought I'd go along to GG and see what was going on. I turned up, stood around for ages saying next to nothing, apparently being totally ignored, so I left. A total wash out. I had a bit of a /tell conversation with someone while I was there, and picked up a few hints, but that was about it. I resolved to never return. I was really disappointed, and quite upset.
My resolve lasted about a month. I thought "What the heck, may as well give it another try..." turned up, managed to insinuate myself into a conversation, and haven't looked back.
It does seem a bit cliquish at GGs, I know this at least as well as anyone else, but actually we're all just trying hard to act in character.
My best recommendation is to turn up and speak to Red Commissar - he's aquainted with practically everyone there, and is very approachable, and there pretty much every night.
The second best option is to roll up an adult female toon and wait for The Telepath (known as Alfred Bester in character) to offer you chocolate. It will happen.
The wisdom of Shadowe: Ghostraptor: The Shadowe is wise ...; FFM: Shadowe is no longer wise. ; Techbot_Alpha: Also, what Shadowe said. It seems he is still somewhat wise ; Bull Throttle: Shadowe was unwise in this instance...; Rock_Powerfist: in this instance Shadowe is wise.; Techbot_Alpha: Shadowe is very wise *nods*; Zortel: *Quotable line about Shadowe being wise goes here.*

I'd disagree with this, as it can detract from the fun.
In my "experience", the level of your character doesn't count towards their personality/experience/powers when it comes to the RP side of things. If it did, you may be forced to level-grind in order to make the character you want.
Steer away from the demi-gods, of course, as no one particularly likes the All Powerful God Of Everything (God being subjective); but don't feel you need to ding 50 before you can have a powerful RP character.
If you want your level 1 to be able to harness the power of the seas, go for it! If you, on the other hand, want your level 1 to break everything it touches, go for that too.
Now you know the basics, here's my general rule of RP:
Have fun, make friends and try not to piss too many people off.

Amen to that. Sometimes, it seems that Alfred has more chocolate in his pocket then Belgium has between it's borders!
and not just chocalate, he has fruit pastels tofee and anything else lol! no kittens unfortunately though.
But yeah, have fun, don't God-Mode and don't be afraid to be the centre of attention, if you have a good idea you want to put in don't be afraid to be dramatic. And if you make a mistake (i should know) don't get unhappy or anything, just carry on, apologise if needs be and have fun
Hope to see you around
RP carries a Canteen of excellent 'medical' Vodka, nothing can beat that .
i prefer whiskey... but either works well
Okay, this may seem like a silly question, but how does one RP?
Ive been playing CoX for some time now, and Im looking for something new to get my interest, but I have no idea how to go about doing it. I didnt just want to show up at the GG meet, cos I wouldnt know how to ask someone what to do - would it break their immersion if I was to ask what it was all about? Do you need to put an ooc question in asterisks?
I guess I was also a bit curious as to how welcomed a new face at GG would be. From reading the forums for a while, I get the impression that most of the regular GG crowd know each other fairly well, is it cliquey?
I just feel like RP is a difficult 'scene' to get into. I really dont know the basics at all - this would be my first foray into the heady world of RP, and Im just looking for some info before i start so Im not ruining other peoples enjoyment of the experience.
Any help would be most appreciated.
