I didn't use any sketching at all, and it's really thanks to the inspiration I got from a fantastic Japanese artist on Deviant Art (can't remember her name right now, but can look her up if you want to know) who creates stunning work in this manner.
I just made a very rough squiggle of thick lines in Open Canvas, then slapped lots of different tones of colour in the appropriate places & built it up, using oil brushes throughout
I can't do anything digiatlly that doesn't look like my three year old daughter did it.
I'd love to see the technique, could you point me to the right placwe at Deviantart?

The tutorial is very basic, I was just inspired by the way the picture was built up and you should definately check his (he's a he not a she! my bad!)other stuff too, totally amazing 
Incidently, this was done in Photoshop CS, which I don't have..yet!
