Build tips
The passives are of limited use. Even 3 slotted with SO's they only give about 11% resit which isn't much use really.
Aid Other/Aid Self is much better 2 powers combination.
Ssssushhhhhhh....don't tell anyone but Stone Melee rocks bells! I've got a SM/Invi and he is absolutely stonking.

Out of the two I would drop the energy passive (not that common). You might find you need conserve power as I've heard stone melee is very end hungry (no experience personally with stone melee though).
Hey,
I have a Stone/Stone and Fire/Energy, so I know a bit of bouth, but haven't tried the combination.
Bout the Energy Aura --> Since ur 95% defense, I only invested in defense shields, so NO resistance(dampening shield) for me.
I didn't get tough on this one (had it), but got Aid self (6-slotted) It's better to heal ur pains than to receive less. Aid self is the BEST shield against psionics!
Stone Melee: Aye, it ROCKS, but it's an end-eater and it's slow but damage output is great, so better slot all ur attacks with 1 end reduction and a recharge. Build up is great if U are a stalker, but for a brute, I don't like it:-(
Goodluck with ur toon!

SM is an end-hog and no mistake. I think that that makes Build Up ideal for the set. I am planning to slot BU 3x Recharge and 1x Acc buff whihc will mean that I can concentrate on slotting end reducers rather than damage in my Mallets o'doom.
Reading the posts a lot of people on the US forums are also swearing by Fault as a great soft control tool. Can anybody confirm this?
On my SM/SA, I luv Fault, have it slotted 2 ACC, 1 rech. I use it to smooth out the alpha, and attrack the aggro! It's a great crowd control power imho. It has no Knockback, only knockdown which is great!
After a Herd, I start with Fault get my kinetics m8 to Fulcrum Shift and then hit'm with Tremor.
They just don't know what's hitting them! They get stun and my Tremor hits them with 300 damage :-)

At later levels Stone/Energy really starts to shine as the 7th and 8th tier powers of /energy are basically there to take your endurance problems away and that's really the only bad thing about stone.
My Stone/Energy is more of a Single-targetter at the moment - building up Fury with Brawl and Stone Fists and when it's up, Heavy Malleting and Seismic Smashing things into bits. Will be adding Tremor to the fray later, not sure about Fault yet.
I agree about the passives being a bit pants, but if you're going to PvP, energy damage is something you'll be getting a lot, and at that point even small things can make a difference. Aid Other/Aid Self is a better combo when it comes to survivability, but if you somehow have enough powers to take both, it won't hurt.

I've got a stine/energy brute at the moment, lvl 16 his powers are:
Stone fists, mallet, heavy mallet, kinetic shield, dampening field, entropy shield, swift, health, CJ, SJ
I was wantint to make something that can dish out lots of pain, and not worry too much about health, mainly PvE, but able to do PvP from time to time. planing to get tremmor and build up for attacks, and all shield powers except conserve energy. So any tips would be helpful
