Mutants in CoH

Hi there.

Just developing a story arc for one of my characters and wanted to know if there was any "mutant intolerance" in Paragon City. I would have thought that with the vast amount of super-powered people about, the population would be fairly tolerant of people "different" to themselves. However, the CoH manual states that mutants are "repected and feared" so is there any sort of misunderstanding or intolerance of them? (Especially at later levels that I haven't got to yet.)

Thanks.

Not really no. About the closest is the Vanguard with their "Earth for humans" posters. Generally aimed at the Rikti I believe, but often taken as anti-Kheldian too.

Personally, as aplayer of a mutant character, I was always hoping more would be made of the possible public reation.

With the emotes for banner waving, it'd be great to see some anti-mutie protestors outside City Hall in Atlas Park!

I may be wrong, but aren't the Outcasts disgruntled mutants who feel they've been discriminated against? No smoke without fire, and all that...

I'm guessing that, as a rule, they're not disliked or prejuced against....however, in CoX we're talking about mutants that can fling lightning, tear buildings out of the ground and breath fire.

I don't think it's the mutant his/herself people are predjuced against; it's rather how the powers are manifested (The GIFT mutant, for example, has the power to....solve any math problem in his head. Not very threatening to the common civilian).

Mutants in the villain groups can't do a lot of good for the public image though.

Looking at today's society, usa especially, I have hard time believing there ISNT an anti-mutant movement. Possibly not that big, but probably loud. My hunch would be that such movement would not diffferentiate so much between mutants and other superpowered beings though.

Why be against mutants? They're dangerous, different, they aren't natural and are un-godly. Just see X-men for details

I've always assumed that Paragon City would be fairly accepting as a whole, because the residents are used to being saved by mutants on a daily basis. However, the manual and description of mutants in-game when you're making a character does allude to their still being people who fear them, and keeping human nature in mind... I'm sure there would be people who'd hate them, just because they're different.

In-game... well, as someone mentioned, the Outcasts are a gang of mutants, and their name does seem to suggest they're not all too happy about their place in society. Also, you'll sometimes get people you've saved in the streets making comments that make it sound like they weren't really all that fond of heroes in general before you saved them ("Maybe capes aren't so bad after all.") - I'd assume that's because they're different, and powerful, and thus scary.

Given that, I tend to assume that there must be at least some people who fear/dislike/oppose mutants in Paragon City itself, and that there are probably higher levels of that kind of feeling in other areas who aren't so used to seeing mutants around, being helpful. One route I know several people have taken with backstories for mutants who've faced intolerance is that they actually came from outside the city itself, some of them heading to Paragon City, in fact, to escape it. It makes sense - in real life, cities tend to be more accepting of minorities, and more liberal. Backwater towns full of people who all know each other and are all the same can often be less tolerant of anyone different from themselves.

I think there is probably a general liking to all metahumans, no matter what the origin, but of course there will be people that dislike them. Isn't there a villian group thats devoted to killing metahumans (malta right?). I have a mutant and the prejudice he reieves is not so much because hes a muant and different, it was because hes a mutant he MUST become a hero or villian in the eyes of the public, even thought he wanted to be a teacher.

Well... As far as the game story itself goes, I'm actually quite glad their virtually no bigotry, it IS a game afterall, and we get quite enough of that nonsense in reality.

However, in roleplaying, it's quite another story; we do try to make things more believable, so bigotry DOES happen. My main has had some quite unpleasant experiences in her backstory since becoming joined with a Kheldian, extreme enough to have been thrown out of the family home by her own father. She's experiences a fair bit in the city as well, though mostly from Vanguard idiots who see her, being a part alien, as little different to the Rikti.

[/ QUOTE ]Actually, [Spoilers] Malta group is intent on controlling all metahumans it can, to protect the US from outside "threats", like the soviets and china. The only metahumans they kill are the ones they can't control. [/Spoilers]
