Heck, I've heard people say they thought Ireland was a part of the UK. That got me.
And, to be really honest, most of England outside the South East would rather be referred to by county name.

Some of us Southern pansies actually do our best to say people are from a certain area, rather than just say "England" or "Scotland"

The point that was being made is that if you call something British you have to make very, very sure you aren't just meaning English. I personally find it very annoying and quite insulting when people use English and England interchangably with British and Britain.
It might not seem like a major point to the English, but for the other countries of the UK it often is.
