Energy has great synergy with FF. Although you could probably get a Kin/NRG up to level 50 you'll have to be careful with the knockback on the blasts when trying to use you kin powers.
For a Controller I recommend Mind. Try Illusion if you like to solo a lot (with rad, kin or storm).
One of my chars is an ice/storm controller
and from all the chars i have i like him the most, got some great holding powers and not to mention the ice slick!
I'd recomend FF if youy're going EN, you dont really want to scatter mobs all over the place with Kin. You dont really want to scatter them anyway, but at least with FF it wont make a difference to your powers, just the rest of the teams.

Storm also works pretty well with energy.
Gale/Knockback=team annoying, yet highly effective solo ^_^
I also think that Dark works well with energy, as you can knock mobs back into Tar Patch and keep them nice and debuffed!
Make an earth/rad controller, strong holds+evil debuffs! Pwn! hehe
FF works very nice with Energy and more importantly the blasts look bubbly!

If you mean you want to make a Defender with the dual qualities of a Controller, go with a Storm/Dark (what I went for). Storm is in itself very much like a controller set, and Dark has amazing debuffs, immobs etc.
If you meant you wanted to make a Defender AND a Controller, I'd go for a Stone/Storm if you wanted pure uberness, an Ill/-Rad/Storm- for Fun, and an Ice/Storm for visual and RP compatibility.

spose i did make my poste a bit vage :P wat i ment was i wanted help on my defender iv made a controelr (earth/storm) and iv decided to make a FF/energy defender, thanks 4 your helpfull words 
I am very much into defenders and controlers and would like to make one of both, i need to decide wat 1st and 2nd primary powers to choose, any ideas? what i had in mind was kin or bubble then energy as secondary (im quite persistant with my 2ndary being energy) but need help on primary. HELP!
