I've played a stalker in the Beta and liked it. I'll do another when I get CoV (next week if all goes well).
I agree that playing a stalker solo it's not easy, but don't agree about the team thing. I've played lots of missions teamed with a mastermind and it was great. Just do an assassin strike in one bad guy and then run to the mercs/ninjas/robots/zombies and let them take the aggro. Them go back into the fight

Wrong, and... wrong.
Well, Stalkers get teams just as easy as Scrappers. They are not as wanted as defenders and tanks (talking CoH now), but they are certainly more welcome to a team than for example a Warshade.
Anyway, they solo quite good as well. They don't have too much HP, but they will kill the enemy first because of the hight DPS. Stalkers ftw! <3

My stalker solos reasonably well.
I found that the duo I was in ( with a D2 Corrupter ) worked really well as spawns of ~4 meant that I did a Assassin's Impale to take out one, he did a snipe and then we mopped up the last 2-3 with normal attacks.
On a larger team there are real problems with the Agro caused by Assassin's Impale can mean frequent use discounts at the hospital. However the ability to take a boss to ~ 50% health and to wipe out a Lt is not to be sniffed at and can mean that you are very useful.
Also I was teamed with a Stalker who was playing it like a Scrapper ( he was SR secondary and didn't have Assassin's Strike ) and in the missions where I was dying too much he seemed to be doing better than me.

got to disagree with that, teamed up with and as a stalker, and no problems at all, infact useful for Lt's and bosses.
and i solo with mine, admittedly is low lvl but i like it.
Saying Stalkers are bad at soloing is like saying Blasters die alot. They don't, it's like a myth.

I'll jump on the band wagon here and disagree.
I'm enjoying playing my stalker, both in teams and solo. Yes they may be good at PvP, but I haven't tried it yet. I'm assuming you have, even though it's evident in a lot of your post that you have a strong dislike of PvP, so I'll take your word for it. 
Made my MA/ENG Stalker yesterday and having great fun. Loving the tactics of it. As for teaming I was in a team with 2 other stalkers today and a couple of others and was very effective. It goes without saying, but those wanting a scrapper like character as their villain are better off choosing a brute. Me? I couldn't be happier (Well..unless they start manfacturing Charlize Theron blow up dolls )

Are there many stalkers out there or has everyone gone dominator/mm/brute?
I made a brute and a stalker so if there's a lack of stalkers then that one will get promoted to my main.
