Video Lock up and sometimes reboot

I got a 9800GT a couple of weeks ago after my 8800GT melted. Now when I play my screen will freeze and I can't do anything . Sometimes I will get a brief BSOD, and then my computer will reboot. I have tried probably 4 different graphics drivers too.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

You have the right driver for your 9800.

My guess, this is just a guess, you don't got enough power to support the new card.

9800's take a tad more power then the older cards do, might look into that.

Okay thanks.

I don't want to assume anything here, but I have 2 optic drives, would unplugging one of them give me temporary relief until I got a new power supply?

Posted

Someone made a nice list of actual power usage of some video cards here.

A typical 8800GT is about 80 watts, a typical 9800GT is about 120 watts.

The total wattage of a power supply does not tell the story. These guys explain it better than I could: Wiki and review site.

Short answer: if its a power supply deficiency, unplugging an optical drive probably won't help. The optical drive pulls very little power if there's no disk in it.

Perhaps you could tell us how much wattage your power supply is rated for? That'd help us out a little...

Looking over your info I think you need to run some diagnostics on your hardware.

Speed fan to monitor your temperatures.

If your temps look good, try some memory testing, here is a brief set of instructions on how to do it.

Mid-forever talks about some testing software here in the ++ Common Solutions & Posting Guidelines ++ sticky in this forum.

Also, you have a lot of programs running at start up that you just don't need, use msconfig to stop some of those start ups. You can read about that here.

Thanks for the help.
Okay, some answers.
My power supply:600W
Speed Fan: System 33C
CPU 48C
I ran memtest and didn't have any errors there.
I hadn't looked at my startup in a while in msconfig, and I cleared a bunch of that stuff out.

Well, I threw my old (4 years?) 6800 card into my system and it has been working like a champ. I think I am going to exchange that 9800.
