Transforming mobs?
Closest thing to this would be the council/ 5th column folks tranforming into a War wolf. I think this would be a great idea to unlock with the Science booster.

I wouldn't mind a little Mr. Smith/Matrix action myself.
I'd also like to see this in the actual game. It would be nice if the lady in the red dress you just saved the purse for suddenly turned on you.

So is there a way to destroy a non-combatant npc and spawn a new combat capable one in it's place based on some trigger?

Currently, there's nothing like this. IIRC, we can't even get Allies to betray and turn on you correctly either and that's a shame if that is still the case. AE is going to grow and improve, I believe, so it's worth waiting for features, but right now, the battle is about making AE as exploit-free as possible, so just hang in there.

Kind of a bummer, but not unexpected. Oh well, I can work around that detail for now. Thanks for the replies, all.
I have a couple of ideas for encounters that would be fun to work into some MA story arcs I'm writing, but I'm not sure if it's possible in the MA system.
Basically the idea is that the heroes are walking the streets, up ahead they see a little old lady on a park bench. But when they get within a certain distance of her, a trigger fires and she changes into a shotgun wielding maniac. It doesn't really work if she's just a costumed enemy since most people would see the orange target outline and take her down from range, "just in case".
