Black screen before login screen

Similar problems as others -- after clicking the first two screens when starting CoH, the screen goes black. I can hear the music, but nothing else happens, no login screen, nothing. The only way out is killing the program through Task Manager.

This is a new machine that came with Vista SP1. All Windows upgrades are in place. I downloaded the client from NCSoft after getting the new system.

Update Vista to SP2.

Uninstall the 186..xx drivers and install the 185.85 drivers instead.

If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.

it didn't work. Vista is upgraded to SP 2. I downloaded the 185.85 driver. I uninstalled the previous driver and then tried installing the 185.85. But I received this message:

You are running a 32 bit version of Nvidia uninstaller on a 64-bit system (Binary type I386). Wrong version of uninstaller.

And then the install program quit.

Advice?

That's very odd. The link I gave was for the 64-bit version of the driver, not sure why it's saying something about a 32-bit version. Unless .....

Did you use the link I gave to download the 185.85 driver or did you find it using some other means? If you used a different method to get the driver, you obviously got the wrong version of the driver.

The link I gave is for the Vista 64-bit driver.

No, I followed the link you provided, saved it to my desktop, and ran it from there. I'll try it again this evening, and if that doesn't work I'll download it again and try again.

I get the same problem but not in-game - only if I try to go to the training room for beta testing.
When I try to play the game normally, no problem.
I have no clue why this is...

The black screen before login only happened with a certain couple of versions of NVIDIA graphics drivers, and only on Vista and Windows 7. Just upgrade to the latest drivers (as of this writing 190.62 (08/21/09) and your problems should go away. I know the early 188 and 189 drivers were doing it, the 185.85s don't and neither do any after mid-late 189. XP doesn't seem to be affected by this regardless.

Thanks, I didn't realize there was a new update. Now finally, I can check out the test server again

No problem at all, if you STILL have any issues try using a program called Driver Sweeper (http://www.guru3d.com/category/driversweeper/) (it's free) to clear your drivers off first, reboot (often times to be extra thorough you can do this from safe mode (so the driver's not running at all) though I've never found it nessicary. Just make sure you don't accidently clear your chipset or audio drivers as well. A lot of times if a version causes problems, and you 'roll back' to an earlier version, and don't remove the newer ones, newer files get left behind and it can cause your graphics drivers to start giving issues (when I rolled back to 185.85 from whichever version was the problem..I had to clean it, becase the problem came back). But generally updating to the newer drivers you don't need to worry with it. I've noticed of all my games, CoH is most picky about driver versions, it may be something to do with its age. If you need anymore help, send me a PM and I'll try to help out.
