How do I use a Pic for the forum?

Posted

Upload a small 80x80 pic to a site such as Photobucket.

Go to "My home." At the bottom of the page, edit personal information.

Scroll down, select "URL to your avatar."

Give it the URL of the image. Put in your password for the site, as well, or it won't accept it.)

Okay, first off, you need a picture

If it's already a fairly small picture (like about the size of my avatar under my name), then you can upload it to a site like ImageShack. Then, you'd select and copy the direct link option.

Now, with that link copied, you can go to My Home at the top of the page, then click "Edit" next to "Personal information blah blah blah" (or click here to edit your basic information). There, you'd need to put in your password at the top (and verify, iirc), then tick the circle next to "URL to your avatar (80x80 max pixels, may be smaller) (.gif, .jpg, .png accepted)", then click on the text field right under, and paste the link to your avatar. After that, click "Submit"

I know there's a guide to it.

Step 1: Get an image.

Only a few types are supported (GIF, JPG, and PNG image files.) They must also be no larger than 80 pixels by 80 pixels. If they are larger, you can use an image manipulation program to crop or shrink them. (Photoshop, the GIMP, etc.)

Step 2. Get a host.

If your ISP gives you web space, great.

if not, some place like Imageshack or Photobucket will work. The account is free.

Upload the image. They will usually give you a direct link to the image file when you're done. Copy that link.

Step 3. Edit your profile.

Go to "My home."
Find "Personal information" at the bottom. Hit "Edit."
Enter your password, then scroll down.
Select "URL to your avatar."
Paste in the URL. It should start with http:\\ - if there's any other tags or such in front (like <img, <source = or the like) you copied too much or the wrong thing.

Save, test.

80x80 pixels, I believe, is the size limit. I'd suggest getting Irfanview. It's a free and easy basic image editor. Makes it easy to crop and resize the image to an allowable size.

80x80 isn't actually the size limit... my avatar is 160x160 I'd say just try eyeballing it the first time, and if that doesn't work, then try the whole resizing thing (I used the GIMP for mine... I wouldn't recommend it, it has possible the worst user interface of any program ever conceived...)

Meh. Okay, apparently the forum smooshes it down now. What's showing on your posts is 80x80 even if the source is bigger.

However, it's polite to make sure it's not that big both size and dimension wise (80k, I think it is) for those without broadband.
