Transportable Internet card?

Looking for some sort of transportable internet source-thingie for a laptop. (heard that something like this exists)

Not gonna be needed for the top of some mountain or deep out in the woods or anything, its just that a family member is going to be travelling out of state and will be wanting to connect to internet without sapping off neighbors of distant relatives. (which isn't gonna happen seeing as they all locked up their networks)

Preferably something that is fairly common and something that can just be bought at the store (no time for ordering off newegg sorry).

The laptop obviously has a wireless network card so I'm just looking for something that can connect.

Any help or advice appreciated.

So assuming the distant relatives don't have any internet access at all or a router to connect to then you are looking for a cellular 3G modem. They aren't cheap and the data plans aren't cheap. Check out whatever cell phone carrier you use, check to see if the relatives can get 3G reception, etc. It isn't as universal as the ads imply.

Additionally, most 3G type internet providers state in their Terms of Service that the service is not for Internet Gaming. Also, most (if not all) carry a 5GB monthly cap, so downloading or streaming of large files can get to be expensive.

So $60/month for the service
Can't game
Can't stream
Doubt if I can remote in to home

For me, that's not worth it.

Yes, and in a shotgun fashion. If you're doing anything that LOOKS like something they don't allow, they'll hit you with a penalty fee for breaching the terms of service and can also cancel the account.

Plenty of land line providers do the same thing. If you hit the download cap, they just ASSUME you're doing something naughty and take action.

Grrrr.

you'd figure they'd be ok with online gaming i mean, it doesn't exactly need a ton of bandwidth

It's the persistent connection not just bandwidth usage 3G providers care about. Web browsing is a few dozen to 100 KB blasts. Each separate from the other. Downloading large files, gaming, VOIP require a connection that lasts multiple minutes per session.
