Warshades and Defense

I've been tinkering with the idea of making a Warshade and an idea appeared in my mind that i would like some feedback on.

Has anyone ever built a warshade for positional defense before?

If so, how has it turned out?

Another thing, if I did build for positional defense, would that defense transfer between forms? Like, if i had say, 20% ranged defense in human form (not including Shadow Cloak), would I also have 20% ranged Defense in Nova and Dwarf forms?

Edit: Typed defense is not out of the question but it seems Shadow Cloak only gives positional?
Sorry if this is a silly question, just kinda curious.

Global Defense bonuses are just that, global. They'll apply in all forms regardless. Any Defense granted from human form toggles won't since those toggles are turned off once you activate Nova or Dwarf.

Speaking specifically of Shadow Cloak, I'm pretty sure the small amount of Defense it grants suppresses in combat like most other stealth powers.

Having said that, positional Defense builds have been done before so its possible. You probably won't be able to softcap without gimping yourself but you can get a respectable amount with IOs. If you're gonna do it, particularly on a Warshade, I'd focus primarily on ranged Defense with a secondary focus on AoE. Black Dwarf is tough enough to handle melee damage without the added bonuses. Especially once you factor in the buffs from Eclipse.

Yeah, I've specced one out so softcap (or at least come very close to) positional defense. IMO, it's not a worthwhile trade-off for all the slots you have to sacrifice for it, but YMMV. Personally, I just preferred slotting powers to perform better at what they do.

Ah alright!

Thank you for the replies :-D

Yeah, I've thought about it, but it seems you might have to sacrifice some valuable slots for damage in order to get the defense you want, and with Eclipse *possibly* maximizing your damage resist, it almost seems a little redundant. Yeah, you'd get hit a lot less, and when you were hit, it'd be for a small amount, but when you throw out your attacks, they wouldn't be near as effective as they could have been.

I'd been looking to respec my TriFormShade for some time. After reading this post I started tinkering with Mids'. I managed to get 29.2% ranged defense without sacrificing much.

Well, the way my build was working out was this way:

I'd franken slot with three slots in all powers in both Nova and Dwarf.

The Dwarf and Nova would be, obviously, the Tank and Damage forms but the Human form would be the Demolitionist form. With the stealth and the teleport, I could position him as someone takes out a minion, or defeat someone, explode that corpse with Unchain Essence, Dark Extraction, Stygian Circle to heal back anything that got to me and then Gravity Well and Essence Drain to help take out whatever tough targets.

I'm not sold on Quasar yet.

One big difference in the two builds I created (Positional versus Smashing/Lethal) is that the Positional gets more damage out of the ST attacks in human form where as I exploit the secondary effects in the Smashing/Lethal build, like increasing the Immobilize in Gravimetric Snare and the Slow in the ST Blasts.

I figured exploiting the slows would be a unique contribution to tough battles, like AVs that get just ridiculous (I'd imagen using the STs blasts on Ghost Widow or Reichsman)

Just a bit of an insight into my thinking.

I got around 20% ranged defense without trying too hard, instead of slotting up my nuke (which I just didn't get around to using much, despite having an End refill power) I took those slots and distributed them among the many "travel" powers a WS gets, which include the Intangible one for example, as well as the Recall Friend and TP Foe clones, for Zephyr sets. That plus a Steadfast Res/Def meant getting noticable Ranged defense, especially handy in Nova form where you can stay at range even when mezzed. And it didn't require much of a build compromise.

Its enough of a base, though, to pop 2 small or 1 medium purple and be soft capped for very good safety in tough situations. And if I can't manage to accumulate some purples in a regular mission with the insp slots I have at 50 I don't deserve to have a WS.

To go much further, IMHO, requires slotting for Def instead of Rch, which hurts having Eclipse up all the time, so I don't know if its worth the tradeoff, especially since its a lot rarer to debuff resistance then defense.

Holy crap I had no idea until now that the Blessing of the Z KB proc wasn't unique. I thought it was...

Hmm...

The ideas are growing...

Edit: Holy Carp! (yes, i meant to say Carp).

I just built a Human/Dwarf build that when in Human form I have 44.4% Ranged and 37.6% AoE (according to Mids) which goes down to 33.3% Ranged and 26.4% AoE when in Dwarf Form.

I likes the Blessingz

Ugh...now I am really in a bind...I've made four builds for this Warshade...

A Recharge Intensive (not really my style), A Smashing/Lethal Defense build more leaning towards Control/Demolition in Human Form, A (Nova/Demolisionist/Dwarf) Positional Defense, and a Demolisionist/Dwarf Positional Defense.

ARGH! I I wish my desktop had the internets so i could post these builds...

>_<

I've been playing with this myself ([u]example here[u]). Soft-capping ranged defense costs a lot of slots -- but with near-permanent hasten & eclipse, the WS could be a gunship of doom in nova form. And getting mezzed no longer causes nova to drop, right?

On another note, how well does the Force Feedback +recharge special IO work in the two nova aoes?

Each target hit gives a chance to proc the +Recharge. Once the +Recharge procs, the chance to proc is suppressed for 10 seconds, preventing stacking of the proc. This means that the best place to put this proc is in an AoE power that does knockback which has a relatively quick recharge (ie. 15 seconds or less, unenhanced) since it will then tend to proc almost every time the power is used, barring suppression due to it proccing "too quickly" ...

It's the end. But the moment has been prepared for ...
