Father Xmas

Posted

I just got my brand new gaming computer, set it up, went out and bought City of Heroes, and installed all of the updates only to find that whenever I try to play the game it stops responding, forcing me to ctrl alt delete. This happens consistently. What is going on?

You have not reached the psychic tech helpline. We are going to need a bit of info before we can go on. Also this is player helping player, actual support is found at support@coh.com.

Mac or PC?

I assume the Mission Architect box edition or did you find a cheap earlier copy?

So you get into the game, make a character, start to play and then it locks up or aren't you even getting that far? Please describe exactly when the game is locking up.

Take a gander at this thread, at least all of Zloth's posts linked in the first one, around 10 or 11.

If you are on a PC, a CoHHelper and HiJack This report would be appreciated.

Right. Sorry about the lack of information.

I bought the architect edition. I have a Windows Vista 64 bit OS.

I'll run City of Heroes. The files (updates?) will be verified and I'll have to hit "I agree." Once I click "I Agree," a loading screen will appear with the heroes on it and I will not get past that and I end up having to end the program.

Ok, so since you haven't provided the requested CoH Helper or HijackThis logs, it's time for rampant speculation.

Make sure you've updated to SP2.

If you have an nVidia card, don't use the 186.xx drivers, use the 185.xx drivers instead.

If you have an ATI card read the first post in BillZBubba's ATI Issues and Settings Recomendations thread stickied in this forum. Set your settings to what Bill recommends in the first post.

Before clicking I Agree, put a tick in the Safe Mode box. If it will load in Safe Mode, that will be useful information for those in this sections of the forum to have.

But the best thing you can do would be to post the logs from CoH Helper and HijackThis that Father asked for.

Then we don't have to try to play Psychic Detective.

If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.

I'm completely inexperienced with this. I can't get the CoH helper to work, and I got the HiJavk this program, but I don't know what the report is. The Log File saved after scanning?

Install Service Pack 2.

In your ingame video settings do the following:
Turn off Vertical Sync. Turn off Anisotropic Filtering. Turn off Water Effects. Turn off Bloom. Turn off Depth of Field. Basically, open BillZBubba's thread named ATI Issues and Settings Recommendations that is stickied in this forum and follow his settings recommendations for in the game and in the CCC. Also, Bill gives the correct procedure for properly updating your ATI drivers.

Update your video card drivers. Update your audio drivers.

Yes, the logfile from HijackThis that it saves after scanning is what we are asking for. Just open the logfile, hit Ctrl-A to select everything, hit Ctrl-C to copy, come to forums and start a Reply then hit Ctlr-V in the text box to paste it here.

I'm going with the odds on favorite and most common cause. A reskinning program like Windowblinds. This is a program that gives your interface a custom feel to it. It's by Stardock so it will usually be found in a subfolder of stardock on your programs list. Tell it not to reskin any program in the city of heroes directory.

Second most common cause of this problem. A graphics tablet installed. Only solution for that one is to not only remove the tablet but uninstall it and remove its drivers.

Edit: And yes, the logfile is what we are looking for from hijackthis.

And I googled service pack 2. Couldn't find anywhere to download it. Could someone provide a link?

Also, I can't get to the ingame settings.

Yup, looks like a version of Stardock for Dell is installed:

O23 - Service: Dock Login Service (DockLoginService) - Stardock Corporation - C:\Program Files\Dell\DellDock\DockLogin.exe

Edit: upon a closer look it may not be a skinning program but worth seeing if it has an option to disable it to see if it might be a cause.

Well, I turned off and uninstalled the dock, and I still have the same problem.

Gol to the Start button, go to All Programs, go to Windows Update. Have it check for updates. Service Pack 2 should be in the list of what it finds.

EDIT: Did you adjust your video settings per my previous post and BillZBubba's ATI Issues and Settings Recommendations thread?

If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.

I cannot access my ingame video settings, because I can't get that far.

Edit: All updates available have been installed. It still doesn't work.

Okay, download TweakCoH and adjust the settings before you go into the game.

I'd also recommend setting it to run in Windowed mode instead of Fullscreen. At least while you are troubleshooting.

Wow! It worked! Thanks so much to all that helped. Sorry about my extreme lack of experience. I think the fullscreen was the only problem.

Edit: Well, I have a new issue now. I'm making a new thread.
