If you are on a trial account though, tells are disabled.
/tell name, message here
However, if you're on a trial account, you are restricted from sending tells, among other things.
Make sure you include the comma, it's required.

when someone sends you a tell, hitting backspace will start off a reply to the last person to send you a tell.
IIRC you can also click on thier name, and get a pop up menu to select 'send tell' which can be handy for some names.
Similar feature on the firend list.
