Shield Defense...what am I missing...

Ok...

so Ive looked at Shield defense...and I can see where the defensive cap can be reached. Defensive cap is 45% right? ( I could be wrong)

But what im wondering is this (and of course I could be totallymisunderstanding this) if you have a cap of 45% melee (lets say) that means that 45% of the incoming melee attacks will miss you right? If that is right that means that 55% of the attacks will hit you. So to my mind (and of course once again I could be wrong) that means your still going to take alot of damage...with no resistance...thats bad right?

Now ..can someone explain to me (like Im the moron my ex-wife calls me) how exactly this works? It just seems kinda squishy to me. I have NO experience with SD so please convince me its good or viable

45% is the soft cap, enemies have a base chance to hit of 50%, there is always a 5% chance to hit no matter what 50-45=5

45% is the magic number and if you reach that the enemies will only have a 5% chance to hit(AV's have a 7.5% no matter what)

The base hit chance of an even-level NPC enemy is 50%, not 100%.

If my memory serves, defense directly modifies their chance to hit. Thus, a def. value of 20% comes straight off their base 50%, leaving them with a 30% chance to hit you.

This is all from the dredges of my memory, so if I'm way off base someone please correct me.

OHHHHHH well NOW I can see where that would be nice...but I bet it still hurts ALOT when that 5% kicks in LOL

NOW I really need to think about SD...

GOlly gee...one more thing to rattle around in my brainpan

In the even that you do get hit, it would be nice to have some form of resistance to soften the blow so take tough as it gives a nice smashing and lethal resistance and you can place the two defense procs into it.

but SD does have resistances. You get about 21% resistance to smashing, leathal, energy, neg energy, fire, cold and maybe toxic? This is all after you slot with SOs of course.

Even with just generic slotting and not softcapped defenses my DM/SD is extremely survivable. Of course my DM attacks do stack with the defense so that helps and I do have a self heal. I do think other power combos would need aidself, but it would work out very well.

I think that the thing you're missing is that you also get against all odds and shield charge. These two powers help out your dps a lot and so you kill stuff quicker. Dead things can't hurt you.

Soft Capped Defense, or almost softcapped depending on Phalanx Settings and Allies. The Addition of a PvP Global Defense IO would ensure softcapping if one feels it's needed.
50%+ Resist S/L
25%+ Resist E/N/F/C/T
00% Resist P
+54% HP (similar to resist, but not identical)

Half the Resist and HP Bonus numbers when OWtS crashes.

Still very respectable performance even without OWtS.

Personally I'm fond of both SD and WP, each for it's own reasons. However, I still play regen mostly more from concept and attachment to the character than anything else.
