They did lower the max number of ambushes after MA was released, and made it count some triggers which were over-looked at first, so you might be remembering one of the missions that took advantage of that initially.

What map are you using? The mini map shown in the editor will have some stats for your selected map. It will say on there what is allowed;
For example;
X allowed Boss, Ally or Rescue (X Front, X Middle, X Back)
X allowed Ambush (X Front, X Middle, X Back)
X allowed Collection
etc.
