Looking for a primary to match with /Sonic
For a solo-er I would recommend Illusion, which I know isnt on your list.
Your Phantom Army are not buffable from your shields, because they dont need to be. But you can use them as a mule for Sonic Dispruption when they're up, and take advantage of that -22.5% Res debuff from level 18 onwards instead of level 32 onwards like most Controllers.
From your list I recommend Fire then Earth then Ice. Soloing an Ice controller is painfully slow, even by my admittedly low standards for such things. Earth is low damage too, but can at least use the -Def to get Sands of Mu hitting reliably.
Fire/Sonic also means your Imps dont get mezzed, Stony and Jack frost lose that advantage of Sonic since they both have some mez protection of their own.
Neither Ice nor Earth have any special compatibility with Sonic.

I have a flexible concept for a /sonic troller and I'm looking for a primary with a buffable pet(s) to make into a little orange god(s). I will be teaming for the most part, but I play odd hours and am sure that a good chunk of my time will be solo so I'm looking for the pet and works best with the /sonic playstyle.

For this, I would personally recommend Earth/Sonic and checking out HotButteredSoul's Guide on the subject
Also, be sure to pick up a pool attack like AS or Jump Kick to help with the damage while you solo, and you won't regret it.
I just posted a good combo for this.
Look at plant!!! Seriously!! Audrey is a decent pet now.
If however your not content on plant. Ice/Sonic is fun (have one at 20 partnered with a scrapper).
I agree with a lot of what Dr. Mike said.
Although I have never tried Sonic on a Controller, I do throw out my buffs to controllers and their pets.
If you are talking solo, I believe the pet that works best with Sonic Disruption is more important than which pet will work best with the shields imo. If you pet dies, you can always resummon, but if you have a finicky pet that refuses to get in range, it will effect you throughout your entire career and greatly frustrate you.
Fire would be amazing for this reason. Your imps are guaranteed to get in range and the mez protection and shields will benefit them well. For solo I could even see Sonic Cage being useful for a Fire troller. The tough enemies really hurt the imps and if the imps wait to focus on the bigger foes, they can easily be destroyed. Toss out a Sonic Cage on a tough boss and your pets are free to destroy the rest then take out the boss once the cage ends.
Although Illusion's pets have knockback and you can't buff Army with shields, the pets still tend to go into range often. If you are taking on a tough foe, you might even find use out of Sonic Repulsion on your Phantom while he blasts the foe from range.
Ice and Earth just don't have the damage and (from what I've heard) both pets can also be annoying with their ranged attacks and their refusal to go to melee.
IMO - Fire/Illusion/Earth/Ice in that order would be the most worthwhile.

The AI for Rocky and Jack Frost was changed a couple of issues ago, Both now usually take one shot from range, and then usually close to melee. Rocky, in particular, is now one of the best pets in the game, especially if buffed with the Sonic Shields. He has HUGE resistance numbers on his own (See my guide for the specifics), and the Sonic Shields make him almost unkillable. My guide is actually out-of-date, in that Rocky now has Seismic Smash in place of Stone Mallet. Seismic Smash has a Mag 3 hold in it.
With his ability to tank, new AI, and new attack with a hold, Rocky has become one of the better and more damaging pets in the game.
LOCAL MAN! The most famous hero of all. There are more newspaper stories about me than anyone else. "Local Man wins Medal of Honor." "Local Man opens Animal Shelter." "Local Man Charged with..." (Um, forget about that one.)

Thanks peoples. though instead of my previous dilemna, now I'm torn on earth, fire and illusion. Guess it's time to make some graphs.
I tall comes down to the math now. All of the primaries fit my concept so numbers numbers numbers.
Just got my stoner, he's big time a melee pet now. He throws one rock, gets into melee, and still uses the rock when it recharges along with his melee attacks.
Sonic is NOT useless to Earth. The best debuff in the set stacks with everything in Earth. Recheck out Liquefy. It stacks with ALL of the other earth powers for massive control.
Stacks with Vent for Hold.
Stacks with Earthquake for knockdown.
Stacks with all other earth powers with -DEF.
Earth/storm and earth/sonic are the best "Control"lers in the game. Stoner isn't bad damage, and he's an awesome tank.
But the big deal is Liquefy. It's like gold to earth and bleh to everything else.

Basically I'm torn pretty evenly between fire, earth and ice. Earth seems to have the most mitigation and the hardiest pet. Ice seems to be the second most mitigation with a less durable pet that I haven't played with so don't know how it compares to the earth pet damage. Then there are the imps. They're squishy but the buffs would have a greater effect on three targets taking damage as opposed to one, also the multiplier on those pets with the -res effects would be hot (bu dum bum). Pure damage numbers on fire are better as well, but I want to make sure I'm not missing some magical convergence with the other two sets that I'm considering.
