I've been playing for a long time but I'm in a one-man SG filled with my alts, so not much of an Ivory Tower there. I often make the "wrong choice" when combining primary and secondary powersets because I like my toons to be concept toons rather than have the best build "EVUR". 
And because of Alt-itis, while I have a few friends who team with me occassionally, they are much tighter among themselves and I don't get to team with them as much as I would like.
I give you all this background because I don't get what you're saying. As a newbie, how can make claims like "this game is becoming every day more and more obsolete"? What are you comparing it to? And what are you basing your claims that people are going to leave because of lack of content? Many players like myself had no idea we would be around as long as we have ... but the devs keep coming up with new, fun stuff to do. (I am AMAZED that over 170 players have now played "Wicked, Wicked Wonderland" and rated it a 4-star winner.)
I'm not even sure about your claims about Vista problems. I have an XP desktop that runs great and fast - but its an older machine and critter animations while creating don't appear. My Vista laptop runs the game a little slower - and I had to get a special cursor -- but it runs MA perfectly.
While I agree with you about farming (I really don't care what others do), I have to wonder where all this anger is coming from someone so new to the game? Something is out of whack here. I only wish I knew what it was.
IF you look at subscriptions COX has maintained a consistent following... As far as Vista Issues... WRONG WRONG WRONG..
Been running Vista for 6+ months and it runs 100x better then when I had XP.. If you having issues with that it not the game at all

The developers apparently have some average rate of advancement that they consider acceptable.
If the average gets skewed by a particular practice, they take steps to address it, until everything falls back within acceptable parameters.
I really think that's all there is to it.
A secondary concern is QoL for the community as a whole. But, first and foremost, it's all about preserving the game system.
It looks to me like that's SOP for every MMO.
So, farming in and of itself is not an issue. PLing in and of itself is not an issue. There will always be outliers that advance at a freaky-fast rate. I don't think the developers care about that.
It's when that freaky-fast rate starts encroaching on the norm that they get twitchy.

Only Vista issue I had was the "multiple processors, one high end graphics card lock up" bug, but there's a (coming in SP2 but available as) Hotfix for that.
Running ever so smooth since then.

Whenever a boat changes it's captain, bizarre and unprecedented stuff happens, anyone that was in the navy can vouch for that, thing is, Cryptic abandoned boat and pretty much said, "Well, tough luck guys" and whoever running Paragon Studios isn't keeping the old pace, actually, no pace at all, just throwing random stuff here and there and waiting for the best, and I'm okay with that for now, let they figure out what does work and let it be, if in 6 months you ("you" being said in general here) aren't happy with the results, well, so many other mmos out there... either this game continues on it's tracks, or ends up being another tabula rasa, either way, life continues.

Last I knew the developers have not changed since I started playing the game AFTER they were bought by NC-soft. That's why I'm confused.
