Mysterious reduction in filesize?
If you were on a different PC, that could be the difference. It seems that others have had similar problems with file sizes changing from one to another.

Might want to play it and make sure any custom groups / critters are still there and look the way you want.
QR -ARGH now I cant login again! Stupid stupid game. My arcs up, published, possibly borked, and there's nothing i can do about it!

My guess is that a group got changed from "custom" to "standard" and the related critters were dropped from the file - the drop looks just about exactly like 2 custom critters' worth.
This is why I have Subversion installed on my arc directory, and I tell everyone who will listen to do the same.
And for a while things were cold,

Subversion? What is that and how does it affect custom groups/enemies?

So today I manage to login again and now it's playable live, but one objective in mission 3 won't spawn, rendering the arc uncompleteable, so I go into edit mode to find the arcs apparently 107.42%. NOTHING is different. No extra customs, no extra text.
I'm so depressed just thibking about what tge hell to do I can't be bothered to go on. I pulled it.
I love the MA. But it's a piece of crap.

QR - right, something is definitely screwy with my arcs. My first arc, The Echo, was at 92% or so, never had any problems with it at all. I just thought to check that out. First I tried tom play it. No problem. The i tried to edit it. 102%. error, your arc is too long. If i exit and abandon changes, its still fine, playable.
Something happens when i go into edit mode that either bumps up the filesize or reports its too large in error.

It's a source control system. Basically, it lets you audit any changes made to your arc by the system itself (exposing bugs, etc.)

This can happen if there were changes to any custom groups made outside the context of editing the mission. The story arc file keeps a reference of the filename for the group in use, and if there were changes, absorbs them on next edit. So if you, say, added a custom critter to a group that's shared between Mission A and Mission B, then edited A, A's story arc file would grow to include the new member.

I've also noticed a significant reduction in the computed arc size, but haven't had any increases or problems with size.
One went from 99% (Live) to 94% (Training Room), but the raw file sizes are 115123 (live) and 115220 (Training Room). Yes, the size of the file on disk increased, but the reported size of the arc in MA went down significantly. This also includes the replacement of extraneous   with real spaces in the new file.
This must mean they changed some internal metric or now store something differently so it's more efficient spacewise on the server.
My Customs haven't changed. Nothing has changed as far as i can see. I've bugged it. Hopefully the Issue 15 changes will help, but that doesn't explain what's happened.

And now the problem is much worse than a reduction. The filesize is now 106.43%. The details of the mission havent changed at all. Finding 6% to trim is impossible, I'd already edited the bejeesuz out of it to get it down to its previous 100%.
Has no-one else noticed any increase in their filesize recently? If anyones got an arc at 99% or near thnats published, could you pop into edit mode to see if the size has changed at all? If it has and you exit and abandon changes, the arc will stay published and playable.

O.o
That looks waaaaay too complicated to a non-geek like me. I don't think I'd get very far. I'd be lucky if I could install it, nevermind trying to figure out how to use it.
Thanks for the explanation, though. If I get brave, I might read up on it to see if it's something I can actually use.

I remember something about critter Default Descriptions causing problems (showing up in the Description box when they weren't supposed, or being too long, or something). You could delete any critter Descriptions that you did not make, and see if that brings it down to roughly the size you had before. If so, republish and see if the descriptions show up properly when the arc is played. If not, you can try editing again, clicking Default Description for those critters, and see what it does. If it puts it back up over 100%, send in a petition.

I looked at the descriptions for all critters. they havent changed at all. Ill try your suggestion and see if that works.
I have a publisheda rc still up that is playable, but shows as 104% in edit mode too. I cant edit that, obviously, as it wouldnt be publishable if i did unless I savaged it to bring it down under 100k again. I have no idea why the MA lets it stay up when its over 100k though.

I'm really beginning to think it's those 'phantom' letters that seem to appear (invisibly) randomly in MA. I had a real problem with this yesterday. I kept getting a message that some 'description' was too long, but everything I looked at was fine. Finally, I decided to go to some of the descriptions that I had worked on to see if there were phantoms. I copied the text that was there and re-pasted it.
When I looked at what pasted, I could see that the end of the 'description' was cut off. Sure enough, I read it and found one of the apostrophes was surrounded by letters and symbols that were not supposed to be there. I think any time you copy something from a word processing program (Word, Word Perfect, MS Works) some of the punctuation in that program will copy over to MA. You can't see it, but it's there. It will show up as an html error or a 'description' error. The best way I can think of to combat that, is to copy the text to notepad, or another basic text program that doesn't have formatting built into it, before pasting it into MA.
They really need to fix the text editing portion of the MA and CoH in general to keep that from happening.

Bingo.
I highlighted a briefing text block, ctrl c and then ctrl v and here's what i got:
"Wait, Swan's on the 'com. Whatâs that, s Iâ" etc.
If this is happening in every text file, its possible it might add up to 7%.
What a downer.
Ill have to go thru the entire arc again.

I don't think you're imagining anything. I had a story arc on live that was just a hair under 100%. It dropped considerably in size after I ported it to the test server, and even after fussing around with the custom enemies involved, it's down to about 92%.
The only thing that changed is all the unlockable items on test are currently unavailable, so all my custom enemies are missing their wings and capes. I don't think that alone accounts for the reduced size, though. The mission file on test is 117 KB, while the mission file for live is 110 KB, so the new file is actually bigger.
Possibly they increased the allowable mission file size, but it's more likely they've found an improved means of compressing the file.

I had 2 arcs up. One I pulled as it had a non-spawning objective and so was uncompletable, but the other, the one in my sig, is still published and playable, despite being at 106% according to edit.

I've also found that using ctrl/a & v could also be adding phantoms. Try right click copy/paste instead. It could make a difference. Also, try to avoid using a word processor for the final copy/paste. I know it's a pain, but I've been moving the text from the word processor (it is handy to actually write in because of spellcheck) and pasting it to notepad as a go-between. It does help to get rid of some of the hidden formatting, a little bit. It's extremely tedious to have to do it that way, but if it minimizes the aggravation of finding phantoms in MA, then it's worth it, IMO.
