Does it cost money to play?

It's been sad to see that City Of Heroes is now charing money for most of it's future expansion packs (Rouge and Architect). I never buy expansion packs in games, but I'm still considering buying city of heroes/villians by itself. One of the key factors for me is if you can play other player's missons without paying and need the archiectect expansion just to make them. Or, can you not play them or create them without the expansion?

You can play AE missions without the Architect box.

It's just I14 updated CD's and a ticket for one of the origin packs.

You don't have to pay extra for it. You don't need the new Architect edition to use it, although it'd be a convenient way to get the latest game client and a free booster pack.

So come on in.

You must be new. CoV was a ~$40 stand alone game when it was released. It wasn't until GvE that you could get both in one. And even then, GvE was a Wal-Mart exclusive when first released.

Free extra content is the exception rather than the rule.

Haha, that sounds good. Glad to know. Actually, this isn't my first account, I tried a trial like 2-3 years back and check the site every couple of months. The archicect thing looked awesome. I'm not sure if I'll end up signing up, but I'd say there's a good chance. Thanks for the help. Any idea if rouge is going to cost money? I understand that more so, and I read an article and I kind of infered that. Was that my bias after thinking this cost money, or do you think it will end up free?

Rogue will cost money.

Edit - AE was awesome for a while. Not so much now. (hugs her badges that are going away)

Really? That's a shame. I mean I do get it, it looks kind of like City Of Villians, which was practically a different game (just much quicker to make I'm sure, considering the whole system and server was set-up already). At least I think it will be like that.

Ug... will you at least explain what you mean?

They fixed some exploits that let people level quickly, and are removing some badges that encouraged farming.

Nothing else has changed about the MA

It's still awesome, and I highly encourage you to try it out.

In CoH? Or do you mean in the industry as a whole? There have been 14 issues of free content for CoX so far, and another should be hitting the test server any week now.

The basic CoH box costs money, plus there is a monthly service fee. When CoV was first released, there was an extra one-time charge to access the villain-side content, but no extra monthly fee. The two games are now sold as one, so you don't need to buy hero and villain boxes separately. They have taken to selling extra fluff packs recently: Wedding, Valkyrie, Cybrog, Magic. Science, Mutant, and Natural should be coming up. Those are totally optional. Mostly it's just some extra costume parts.

All of the Architect stuff was given for free to all subscribers. That's what Issue 14 is. The Architect edition is just something to put on the shelf for potential new players. Existing players don't need to buy it in order to access I14 stuff. If you are a new subscriber and you buy one of the older boxes, like GvE, you'll still get all the I14 content for free.

Rogue will probably be a major new expansion, like CoV was: new box on the shelf, with new content only available to people who buy the box. That's just speculation at this point, though.

Issue 6 was the first and only paid expansion we've had so far. Going Rogue, whatever issue that is, will be the second.

There have been 14 issues, 15 soon, and if you count Issue 1 as a for-pay issue, that's 12 issues for free, 2 for pay, not counting 15.

Paid expansions are the exception rather than the rule.

The AE/MA is still very cool. In fact, it is being improved.
Some players have been upset by changes to the system that were implemented because people were abusing the content in order to get them more quickly than what the DEVs intended.
It is a very cool system and I think it is fun to create and run my own missions.
It is a little hard to find good content generated by other people due to a rating system that has been contaminated/corrupted by "rate mine 5 and I'll rate yours 5" groups and random griefing by some to 1 star missions that have held 5 stars over a large number of plays.
They system itself is not the problem. It's how it is being used that is really the issue.
And, like I said, making missions is cool. The interface is easy to use to make mission arcs that "run"/function just like those in the game - albeit in the AE and not in the City/Ilse at large.

There are still CoH and CoV box sets out there on the market that are selling far below the website costs of the game. Any CoH or CoV box will get you access to CoH and CoV for a month. Then there is the monthly fee.
The City of "Going Rogue" will require you to have CoX (CoH and CoV) already installed - it is not stand-alone like CoV was. Co "Going Rogue" will be a full priced box set like CoV was when it first came out.

In general, the game is mostly free "expansions" of content. The DEVs are working on i15 now.

There are "boosters" available that give you additional content and these do cost something. These include some powers that - though are not required - are usually cool or useful to have. They also include costume parts and emotes. These include the GvE, Cyborg, Magic, etc.

Then there is the special booster - flight pack that is a fee per month of use. This is the only booster that has an on-going charge.

Of course, there is a monthly fee that will vary depending upon if you use time cards or subscribe through the website for 6-months or 12-month periods.

I hope you sign up. It's a great game.
Welcome to the City.
