Have you watched the demo they came from? Do the swords work there?
There's an option in the game called 'remove close fx' or something like that. It makes it so special effects vanish if the camera is real close to them. (Very handy if you play in 1st person.) However, in demo playback, the game thinks the camera is always close for some weird reason.
I would suggest going into the game and making sure that option is off. I think you can also turn it off with my demo launcher in the advanced section.

Went in, checked it. It's off.
Now, I am truely confussed. I went back to the original demo where I pulled the custom character code from and removed everything that wasn't the custome character, the player, the cam, or the map. Then I went through a process of eliminatation to see what made the toons sword disapper.
There are 0 (ZERO!!!) FX outside of the custom toon costume code, and the sword still shows up in the demo. I've pasted the now stripped demo code below in case someone else can find something else that I missed.

well I thought you all would like to see the results of your aide. This is still a rough cut as I have a great deal more to add and I need to fix timing, but the idea is there:
The basic idea
Last post before I get cut off at midnight...
That was effing great, but three suggestions
1 - Unless there will be titles or something else on top of it, spend less time on the over-water establishing shot. I love it, but audiences bore easily.
2 - The transition from the zooming-panning establishing shot to the first group is kinda jarring. There needs to be some frames showing the group from above by tilting the camera down as it descends. As it is, they just sort of magically appear.
3 - Lower the CAM's Z co-ord by a couple or ticks to do away with that wasted headroom. NEVER have your subject's head in the vertical center of the frame.
Overall, you've got some great technique here. Study how movies are framed and use that to build on what you've got. Learn about the Rule Of Thirds!

With the entire zoom across the water I'm debating weather to do titles or a voice over. Voice over would be more effective and less likely to stress out the viewer, but well you can figure out the rest.
I'm in the procress of stripping out the entire camera movement and remapping the entire thing. The version you see in the video was a first test run. The second version should A) address all the points you raised B) fix several other little... snags and C) Be a lot smoother.

okay, I'm coding this demo. Short of the long the majority of the demo is a long camera move that ends with the camera facing a group of custom characters. After a delay of 1.2 seconds, the group of characters draws their swords.
So: Camera movement works fine.
The Custom toons are where they need to be
The toons perform the right MOV to draw swords
but wait.... there's no swords!
so, what am I doing wrong? Here's the demo code:
