Dark Melee and Fury

This has probably been discussed to death somewhere, but my searchfu is weak, so apologies in advance.

Presently, I have 3 brute projects I am enjoying.
<ul type="square">DM/DA level 50
ElM/DA level 42
DB/WP level 27[/list]
Of the three, DM/DA struggles the most at generating or maintaining any decent amount of fury, which makes no sense to me. At first I thought the issue was Dark Armor but my brute loving friends assure me attacks alone were enough to generate and maintain fury. This seems to hold true for my ElM/DA. Thus far, my DB/WP seems to maintain fury the best, which seems at odds with what I was told about Dual Blades and brutes.

So, is the problem Dark Melee? Perhaps I need a better attack chain? Is this less of an issue for DM when paired with a different secondary?

Are you using Shadow Maul a lot? Your fury degrades more during the Shadow Maul animation than it increases from using Shadow Maul. So if you're using the mez shields from DA to reduce incoming attacks, and frequently Shadow Mauling, I could easily see a net fury loss.

Otherwise, no idea. Sorry.

Actually, yes I do, but mainly for hitting 2-5 targets. You're the third person to mention this to me. I had initially dismissed it as the usual "Shadow Maul hatred" but perhaps it has more validity for brutes? If this is true, it's rather disappointing. I'm being told that Fury generation from Shadow Maul is the same regardless if 1 target or 5 are hit by it. Is that correct?

Generally speaking, attacks with animations of 2 seconds or higher are a break-even or loss of Fury at values under 80 - you lose 2 points of Fury per second and gain 4 for attacking (general case - it goes up against AVs, players, and in theory bosses but I haven't paid that much attention).

Since the only attack DM really loses Fury on is Shadow Maul (SL and MG are essentially break-even) you need to include some shorter animation attacks between if you're going to maintain it with just attacking. Smite, Brawl, Shadow Punch, Boxing, Gloom... these are the Fury builders, as is simply being attacked (ie, turn off OG and/or CoF until you've got a good level of Fury).

I find it extremely silly that the devs took away Ice Armor from Brutes and gave them Energy Aura ostensibly because "slowing the mobs attacking you hurt Fury" and left them with a powerset with an unsuppressed stealth and no continuous taunting mechanism so that it's harder to keep things attacking you in the first place (EA) and a set that has unsuppressed stealth with a minion-level permastun and lt-level fear to prevent them from attacking by stunning and reducing the frequency of those attacks through fear (DA).

Edit: and since you asked, AoE powers only increase Fury once, not once per target.

I found with my dark/dark brute if I use shadow maul at the start of a mission or fight and leave it be I can keep fury up. I know the debuff is small but I mainly use it at the start to reduce the chance of getting hit. I tend to pull around a cornerwhen I do it. To be honest though for me the easiest way to max fury for me is jump into a group take alpha fire my area heal then get my endrance back. From that point on only bosses seem to take a bit to kill.

There are some missions I forget I even have shadow maul but I still use it in boss fights just to break things up. It is one huge let down when I get a group lined up perfectly only to miss everyone but when I am able to hit them all is sure is nice.

I've used DM with WP and it builds Fury very fast even at low levels. DM is fine. It's DA that has powers that work against the Fury mechanic.

What are your play styles like on each of the Brutes? Generally, for me the more I team the more fury I have. For example on my Super Strength Brutes I usually have very little Fury when I solo. I eliminate most of the enemies in one or two shots and the enemies rarely attack me. In a team scenario I am getting attacked lots and lots and thus have lots of Fury.

Is this issue largely solo or teamed?
