Loading time in this game usually has a LOT more to do with internet connection and the route your data takes from your computer to the server than it does with your computer's specs.

Even when I do put something on the search comment, I sometimes get annoying tells about it.

Something akin to 'this is a MMO, so no soloing' and'how dare you even think of doing solo stuff??'

This is where I would simply say "And yet... the Scrapper."

In an old tabletop supers campaign, we had one hero whose handicap was that he didn't have a mouth. Gagged all the time. Also supervillains kept phoning the base to torment him.

Hahahhahaaha!

Friend of mine in a rpg also had a mute character, or I should say, one who *did not speak* because of some vow. She was trying to describe a big monster that she'd seen and was coming our way.

The player acted this out:

Big eyes, scared looking, and kept waving his hands up from behind his head.

We were all, "peacock? bleach blonde? headwound?"

it was a riot

Bah, keyboards are cheap, why bother "saving" one?

[/ QUOTE ]
Well, my keyboard was wearing out so I needed to replace it. The exact model I had was no longer available so I got a very similar one but with the cursor control keys in a different arrangement. I figured how hard can it be to adjust? HARD! Especially since my keyboard at work had the previous layout.

Okay, try again. I get a keyboard with the exact layout I'm used to and start up CoH. SONOFA.... it won't recognize two simultaneous keypresses if the keys are on the same row.

So, try a THIRD keyboard. Finally one that has the right layout and does everything right. I'm typing on it right now. Once I was sure it worked right for me, I bought a spare.

Believe me, if I had only one keyboard that I liked and spilled something in it, I would REALLY try to save it.

...this is why I have identical keyboards both on the other computer in the house, AND on my docking station at work. In a pinch... I can 'borrow' one of them until I can get to Fry's and replace the one that gets broken.

Anyone else had any moments like this lately with comments so stupid that all you can do is shake your head?

[/ QUOTE ]

Comments? Plenty.

But the best idiot moment wasn't a comment.

It was back about four...ish years ago. I somehow found myself, turtling along with a lowbie Ice/Storm controller, on a team with one other player. We run a couple of missions together, then the other player invites a blaster.

Up comes the next mission and we merry three hop in, an office map, as I recall.

And the first thing the blaster does is jump headlong into a spawn and get himself killed.

Now, this isn't the idiot moment, this was par for the course for many blasters back then. No, the idiot moment was something almost magical.

The blaster rezzes, right there in the middle of the spawn, while the other player and I are fighting. And said blaster promptly gets smeared into a little greasy spot. But we recover, finish the spawn and up hops the blaster, with a hearty "lol".

Three spawns later, we're standing on a balcony, facing another handful of dirty criminals in need of arrestification, and the blaster does his "jump in and inspect the floor" routine. Hits the ground before the other player or I are even within aggro range. The two of us just stop for a second, staring at this poor blaster lying on the floor... and he says "lol" and pops an Awaken.

And he promptly gets smacked right back down again. And says "lol".

FREEM! Another Awaken.

And ZOT! Another beatdown, followed by (yes, you guess it) "lol".

He does this three more times in that same spawn, in a span of time totaling no more than 20 seconds. Rez, die, "lol". And the other player and I are just rooted in place, can't figure out what this blaster is trying to accomplish or if he's just completely mental, or maybe 3 years old. I keep trying to tell him to stay down so we can aggro the lieutenant standing on his face, he keeps rezzing and loling when he gets pounded into paste again.

He never said anything else, just "lol", and every time he died, he tried to rez immediately and got killed again just as quickly. I swear, by the time we finished that mission, he had to be at max debt, and he must have been carrying a full tray of Awakens, because despite using more than I could count, he never asked either of us for one.

I tried to help. I kept telling him to stay down, suggested that maybe he could let someone else take the alpha, practically had O2 Boost on auto with him targeted, but the instant he saw a spawn, he bee-lined right into it and got himself killed. Every freaking time. And he apparently truly enjoyed it, because he'd rez and get killed instantly, and just say "lol".

I never saw that blaster again after that mission ended. I don't know if he was new, or just really enjoyed that Awaken animation, or what, but he just disappeared after one final "lol" when we were exiting the mission. I have to admit, by the time the mission had nearly ended, I couldn't breathe, I was laughing so much. He seemed to be so delighted, so happy, I just couldn't not be happy for him.

Wherever you are, lolster, I salute you. May your face be perpetually planted and your inspiration tray always have one more Awaken.

Oh, really?
Or something not so over the top.

If all you want is a generic, lowest-common-denominator keyboard, you can find them for ten dollars or less; if you want one that isn't going to have keyswitches start wearing out after six months, or have good tactile response, or additional features like programmable keys, you're going to be paying more to have something that isn't a fungible accessory.

Yup. Why would I want something fancy when the cheap stuff gets the job done just fine and doesn't cost tons of cash to replace? I've been using cheap keyboards for over 10 years and never had a problem.

[/ QUOTE ]Unfortunately, not everyone has that option. Due to m'Hunny's wrist problems (not Carpel Tunnel Syndrome, but similar), the cheapest keyboard that didn't exacerbate the condition was almost $150. If that had ever gotten spilled on, you can bet we would have tried everything we could to rescue it.

Ugh <;_;>

My sympathies too, I have a wrist condition as well (tendonitus, from an old tree climbing injury), but I'm lucky that it flares up quite infrequently. When it does though I have to quit using the comp, sometimes for as long as a week. Sucks <;_;>

Eww. My primary entertainments are Reading, "Computtering", watching Movies, and CoH. A week with no computer would be . . . Not Good.

Since I got this ball rolling - I'll just say that I see the merits of both sides of this discussion - luckily I can afford the $14.99 for a slick new keyboard - but the one I ended up getting, even tho I like the feel of the keys, does have its problems.

The ESC key is not square, it's like a little rectangular half-key, so I do have trouble finding it without looking down, and right above it there's a programmable quick-key that by default opened my Outlook. So I had to switch that off as I kept hitting it by accident when reaching for my half-size ESC key.

But as you say, it's been a few weeks and now I'm getting used to it, and like the overall feel of the board so much I won't be taking it back or anything.

So to each his own - if you wanna, and can, go green and re-spiffify your old keyboard. If you want a new keyboard, and can afford it, buy one.

Helpful, eh?

Here's my very recent personal idiot moment (an action, not a comment).

I'm playing my son/kin corr, lv 19 at the time, working on some badges/plagues in Cap au Diable, when I spot an orange con Ruin Mage. Now at the time I was also working on a 'kill 20 CoT' mish from Willy, so I needed to kill CoT anyway and thought, why not: I needed mages for the defeat badge anyway.

Now, I did see the second Ruin mage that was close by (also Orange Con), but I thought the one I was pulling would be far enough away. Wrong. Got both and I spent the next 30 secs or so perpentually locked down (immobilized and held) while they slowly killed me. Couldn't fly away to save myself and a break free didn't help at all. Needless to say I woke up in the hospital fairly quickly.

Now, you'd think I would have learned my lesson. Not. After just working off my debt, I spot another Ruin Mage, again orange con. This time he was completely alone, so I thought I had a chance this time.

Wrong.

Again, immoblized and intermittently held while he slowly killed me. I was able to get some hits on him this time, but the creep stayed just far enough away to where I wouldn't have been able to heal myself off him. You can guess where I ended up after about a minute of slow torture.

This time I have learned my lesson: avoid Ruin Mages like the plague until they are nice and grey to me. Then I'll have my revenage....

An Idiot Moment:

I'm on a team running the Midnighter's Club arc. (I'd run it several times before, both solo and on teams.)

We get the "Cure the Lost" mission, and several of us head for Perez Park.

I'm hitting Lost left and right, and I notice that none of mine seem to be reducing the count.

Just then I get a tell: "We're supposed to CURE them, not kill them"
