Making fun of yourself is a great quality to have, in moderation. A Person who can see humor in himself and account for his own flaws is a wise man. Someone who attempts to remove those flaws...

As for your artistic ability!

WE're actually hoping to set the game in San Francisco circa the late 1800s (1870-1890, not sure yet) Could I impress upon you to re-draw an old map, for me?

This is the map we're hoping to use... Would you be able to reproduce it in pencil (minus the colored areas) and scan it? I haven't been able to locate the unmodified original online, so having a new copy of it would be -extremely- helpful! =-3

Your expertise or presumed lack thereof aside, I might have som actual photographs that I'd ask you to duplicate and alter. For example taking an old Victorian era building and turning back the clock to envision what it looked like before the paint started peeling, or bricks became cracked and broken. Would you be interested in that sort of thing?

I'll send you a PM so as not to clutter this thread, in case anyone else is interested in helping out. I can get pretty wordy.

I'm sure you'll need a writing team, and I wouldn't mind potentially being a part of that team.

I am an ebil markeeter and will steal your moneiz ...correction stole your moneiz. I support keeping the poor down because it is impossible to make moneiz in this game.

This sounds like a terribly interesting idea, though the apparent scale and scope makes me shudder.

This is gonna be really tough. Sounds like you're still building up to the real critical mass needed to make this a self-sustaining project rather than just an idea. I think your first hurdle will be building a cohesive team. Ideally one that's able to proceed without you, if need be.

Of course, there's already been enough doom-and-gloom skepticism in the other thread regarding this. I should probably stop being a dripping wet blanket. Raining on parades isn't cool.

I'd offer to contribute, but I don't have any relevant technical skills - and technical skills are the first thing you need, not the last.

I've helped run text-based games, mostly MUSH and MUCK codebases. But while I've been an administrator on those games, my role has almost always been what an MMO player would call a GM. Or customer support.

Getting truly technical people is the greatest challenge. A game requires more than just coders. You need folks who can design combat systems, think in balance terms, and then make it happen in the game engine. Writers and artists are relatively easy to find. Technical experts who are really skilled in math and practical software creation are rare. I don't mean to insult most game players, but I reckon most folks have good ideas...but the devil's in the execution.

And like visual artists, the really talented design and code people want to work on their own projects. I know several people with such skills, but they're already gainfully employed. I don't mean anything negative by this little homily on game design, please note. Typing all this out is just my way of working through the scope of your challenges. I do wish you luck with this.

As for me, personally...I'm a writer by inclination and former profession. I was a radio journalist and scriptwriter. I draw as a hobby. But my knowledge base is politics and economics, not history, and my art isn't genre-appropriate.

I'd be willing to help in whatever way I can, though I doubt what I can do is really useful for your purposes. I'd happily do free art, but a) I'm not that skilled, and b) I do cartoons and manga-style stuff in bright distinct colours and strong lines. Most of my recent work is CoH gift art and commissions. I could attempt stuff suitable to the gaslight or Victorian period, but it'd be new ground for me.

Do you have any spec document that declares the direction of the project? (i.e. is this going to be 3D, or isometric? how'bout gameplay mechanics: will this be skill-based, turn-based etc..?).

I believe that a Kheldian Gold Standard should be based on SO's, and for anything above that... there's Platinum!

Interesting idea! Shame I have no real marketable skills to offer, or at least none that are refined at a "marketable level". I am by nature a jack-of-all trades kinda guy, little bit of writing, some art (fine arts major here), etc.

I dunno how useful I can be for you, but if you feel like tossing in a wildcard player for ideas and a little bit of this, that an' t'other, I'll take a look.

Out of curiosity you might want to examine my arcs below to get some idea of my writing and idea skills (I think I got all the unintended typoes out!). They are of course only humor-oriented ones (so far). And I say that to honestly give you something of mine to check out, not just to get more stars.

Hah. My ability to remain hidden even when out in the open amazes me to this day.

Ah well.

Well, when it comes to making a game or anything like that I would be of no help. What I can do it music. Been a musician for 27 years. That is one thing I could make for a game

Sounds like a plan, Cherokee! Mind sending me a PM with any music you might've performed in a link? I'd love to hear what you've done. =-3

Hmmm... Victorian and ambiance music? Perhaps some generic 'RPG' music if you've got it in you? =-3

Just generic stuff? Thats easy. I'll see what I can pull up when I get in my studio tomorrow.

I was thinking you might want something really original.

I always had some cool ideahs about *this* game when it comes to music. I have taken a few songs like the one in faultline when you first zone in and made it IMO better. My wife likes that song...heh

Well... Based on how you do those (General background themes) we'll get you into work on the sweeping, awesome music which then deteriorates into ambiance music so that it doesn't override the action on the screen.

We also have a really big need for a strong theme and a strong core sound for the game. Something we can upload on the website when it launches. Something we can put right at the beginning of the game that fits the genre and strikes out into the player's memory. So that every time they hear that tune they think of the game.

Ever heard of The Clockwork Quartet?

I only recently heard their music. And I think it'd make a wonderful 'dark' theme for the bad side of town.

Anything you're willing to work on is wonderful, Sherokee. =-3

I would be very interested in helping. I can do some help with the website, as well as help write content (I'm a very big fan of both English and Japanese Steam Punk).

I am interested in developing other talents that would be useful in this project but at the moment all I can bring is my writing ability, html knowledge and a deep enthusiasm for the genre.

I'd like to offer my abilities as a concept artist and also as a 3d modeler. I have a sample of 2d work at my new site I've been working on: www.brianthieme.com

There's also a bit of 3d work at my old site at www.bthieme.com which is being dismantled.

I'm in the process of rebuilding my portfolio, so I'd be happy to do some concept art and treatments that could go towards a presentation/pitch.
