SR vs Shields

I was looking at Mids trying to decide which scrapper to make. I currently have a Fire/WP, but was looking to try either SR or Shields next.

Is this correct? Mids shows SR having less base def than Shields and Shields has res on top of that. Am I missing something?

Yes, you are. I'm not sure what though.

Are you looking at a specific pair of powers? Total +def with everything slotted?

I looked at all +def powers from each at the base level. As far as I understand, each exhancement grant percentages and you gain better return from larger base numbers.

Something doesn't seem right about this and I know it has to be me.

Yes, you're missing something. SR has -def debuff resistance, as well as a scaling +res as you take damage. In general, once you've completed SR (got all the passives and actives), your defenses are much stronger than shield. Shield, in return, gives you a damage boost from AAO and Shield Charge.

Fighting one opponent, taking melee def as an example, unslotted, sr gets 19.5% and SD gets 15%. SR gets better def debuff resistance too. I think mids screws up phalanx fighting.

Mids automatically assumes that you have one target in range of Phalanx Fighting. You can change this to 0 by altering your Mids Data Base.

Thanks. I changed it and that dropped Shields +def. I am trying to decide which of these I want to use now. I want a def secondary and both are appealing. I guess I'll just need to make them both to figure it out at this point.

Thanks for all your help.

You're kind of vague here. Specifically what is Mids showing? I'm betting Mids doesn't have a button saying "SR is less base defense than Shields!"

Is it showing the toggle defenses and the passives added together are less than Shields' toggle defenses? Can you list the power names and the numbers that caused you to draw this conclusion? Then we'd know what you were looking at and could give more useful opinions.

SR with 6 defense powers not slotted would give 19.5% defense while SD would be 15% with 0 enemies in range of Phalanx fighting. Assuming 3 slotted with SOs SR will go to 30.4% and SD will be 21.3% (you cannot enhance the self +def of PF).

SR will have better defense debuff resistance and SD will have better base damage resistances and more hit points. SR also have to wait for AoE defense which SD gets early. SD will be harder to softcap but arguably stronger once you get their, plus you get Shield Charge.

And it will be 0, considering it's an 8' radius (your melee attack radius). If it really were enemies... well, everyone should have Invincibility, shouldn't we?

Shields has a self-damage-buff aura and passive +HP going for it, as well as moderate resistances to S/L and small resists to everything else (outside of the Tier 9). SR has generally higher defense values, much higher defense debuff resistance, +perception, and scaling resists to all (x3 if you take all the auto powers).

If I could get the shield power set without shields...i'd go Shields.

It's a more fun powerset. Shield Charge might not be up every spawn, but it's just to much fun.
