Complete *3D* Graphics Corruption

Only the 3d graphics get corrupted. It happens randomly, usually after extended play and more frequently after/during grouping with others rather than soloing. I can still see the interface just fine and I can type in chat. However, all I see behind the HUD is random triangles of different colors. Exiting the game causes a hard freeze on my computer immediately after the game closes.

I am using 185.85 version of Nvidia's drivers with Windows Vista. I have auto-updates enabled so I don't have to micro-manage my drivers. Service pack 2 was automatically installed some time ago, so the hotfix in the sticky does not apply. When I was using a previous video driver (182.xx), I would get a white screen (sometimes when logging in) and the game would freeze, but I could close it with task manager and go back to Windows just fine.

The first thing I thought when I saw the graphics corrupt was overheating. I ran Nvidia's temperature monitor and my GPU temperature rarely goes over 150F. I know for a fact that I don't start to get overheating problems until it goes over 170F because it used to do that when I had the stock fan on it. I know my CPU is fine with a giant Zalman fan on it.

I'm suspecting the drivers I'm using are not very good for CoX. Has anyone found good drivers for CoX? I'm going to try the 169.xx drivers mentioned in the sticky, but if I can't get it running without crashing, I'll just have to switch to CO when it comes out since they will be officially supporting Vista.

Does it happen in other games? Or just in CoH?

Posted

This kind of problem has only happened in CoH for me.

I ended up installing 178.26 video drivers. The game ran without glitching, but I did not test extensively. Also, there was a noticeable drop in framerate, but I would rather have stability, of course.

By random triangles do you mean that parts of the geometry (Maybe a cape, maybe a sign, maybe a wall, maybe anything) extend outward in a wedge that goes all the way across the screen?

If that's happening then the card is failing. And because it's failing it's maximum temperature it can reach before failing is getting lower and lower. Use some fan speed controlling application to max out your fan speed and drop the card temperature. I guarantee you will stop seeing the triangles of doom. At least until the temp/failure threshold gets low enough for the card to fail completely.

No, it is not a single random triangle or a wedge of an extra polygon. It is literally thousands of random triangles on the screen. This is the best screenshot that I could find that is similar to what I see.

Similar to this, but with a lot more triangles.

If I thought posting Hijackthis and CoH Helper logs would help, I would have. I know Hijackthis can tell us if something is interfering with another program or if there is malware on the computer. CoH Helper only shows driver versions and settings, which are not the issue here. I stated which video drivers I am using because this is a video issue.

If it was overheating, I would see problems in other games. I don't want to spend the money on a new video card just because one game has issues.

If you knew how to fix it you wouldn't be here. You can either help us help you or deal with this on your own.

Unless you have run a temperature monitoring program, you can't say that with certainty either. This game is very demanding at high settings and we could verify those too if we could see those reports.

That still looks like overheating. And no you wouldn't necessarily see it on other video games. CoH stresses the GPU much more than the great majority of video games out there. Do like I said and use speedfan or something similar and set your fan speed to 100%. See what that does.

And if it looks as bad as the image you put up then you can probably already find some ruptured resistors or capacitors on the card.

I had this exact same issue with my old 8800GTX. After replacing it, I stuck it in another machine to test it out. It generated graphics articles on the desktop. That card was dead, and I know it never got too hot, so it wasn't an overheating issue. Rather (this is my theory, mind you) the PCB on the card warped after I replaced the stock cooler - the aftermarket one didn't give any support to the rear of the card where the two PCI-E connectors were, due to my zealous cable management, pulling down on the card just a bit.

Don't rule out hardware even if the temperatures look fine.

Ok, I have an actual screenshot from when my graphics went corrupted, here:
http://i270.photobucket.com/albums/j...0-22-36-06.jpg

The screenshot doesn't show it, but the 2d interface was still visible and working. I could chat with people just fine.

I ran a temperature monitoring program. After the crash, I checked the logs and the temperature never went over 145F. I have seen the temperature as high as 160 in other games with zero problems.

I am hoping my card isn't bad because I don't want to spend money to replace it. I would like another opinion on this. Please do not blame this on heat again as I have completely ruled that out. Any more input?

So you can tell me my sound card driver is out of date? I have not seen a logical reason to post CoH Helper or Hijackthis information for this issue. You'll just have to take my word for it that my OS is up to date and I don't have viruses or trojans interfering with my video card. I'm not an idiot when it comes to computers and I will not be made to look like one by someone who tries to point out one out-of-date driver. Post something useful or don't post at all.

Other games run fine on my system. There is no excuse for it being more "demanding" on a system than every other game on the market because it isn't. The game is much older than my computer which runs brand new games just fine. If CoH is crashing my computer, it must be the one to blame. I can, however, accept that it uses certain code not found in most games which exposes a certain flaw in my video card. For example, if it is using corrupt video memory that would normally be corrected by other games, I would still need to replace my video card soon.

If anyone has anything useful to add to this, or specific reasons or information needed from CoH Helper and HijackThis, please add it.

I could so tear that post apart. But I won't, I'd just make you mad, probably.

So here is my solution: Buy a new video card. It's your problem.

/without more info, that's the only solution.
//The picture produced is bad video memory and/or overheating of the video card GPU itself. Whether you believe that or not.
///Assuming that your statement of driver/patch wholesomeness is true, of course, which I just have to do because you said so.

I agree completely. You should post something useful or don't post at all. This is a forum where you get help from other players. If you don't cooperate, you get no help.

Go to Customer Support and tell them you won't run the diagnostics they ask you to run and they'll tell you there's nothing more they can do for you.

Then you'll quit the game blaming everyone but yourself.

That's problem #1. Download the driver directly from Nvidia, or Windows Update may just send you an OEM "vendor" driver that doesn't work.

And there's your clue why not to use Windows Update drivers. But it's not related to the triangles.

[ QUOTE ]

[/ QUOTE ]

It's not overheating, it's a defective video card - particularly bad video RAM. I had that happen with an EVGA, and it was thankfully covered under warranty. You need a new or replacement video card.

For future reference, the techies here seem cranky because every once in a while we get someone who posts with "I can't play, I *know* it's not my system, it's the game - devs fix the game so I can play!" Don't do that.

[/ QUOTE ]

Except that the *actual evidence* shows that it is. There is a near-constant stream of people posting here with the refrain "my system runs other modern games fine, but chokes on CoH". The only logical conclusion is that CoH regularly stresses out systems more than the majority of other games.

There are several likely components to this. The vast majority of 3D games are specifically optimized to have a limited variety of things on screen at once. CoH's amazingly flexible costume creator is pretty much the opposite of this; a single frame from someone standing in a busy spot like Wentworth's may well have more individually distinct 3D objects in it than an entire level in a shooter. There's also the database load involved; loading all the auction info at the same time as trying to keep up with everyone's powers is one reason why a lot of people complain about major slowdowns or crashing at Went's.

Other MMOs frequently have strong level gating effects running under the hood; under combat conditions where performance is important, odds are that you've got a much smaller set of visible equipment. There's also frequently a lower level of graphically intense toggle effects that can be run continuously, especially out of combat.

The number and variety of animated player effects, both costume and power, is also significant. Capes, trenchcoats, auras, wings, showers of spent brass casings, and the occasional literal kitchen sink. Note that when a bug in the Magic booster costumes allowed both a cape and a bolero, we were told that while they agreed that it looked cool, that having it readily available would exceed the rendering "budget" and reduce performance for too many people with less powerful systems, so it had to go.

All of the above is based on *what* the game does; there's also the issue of *how* the game does it. CoH is in the most general of terms an old engine that has been upgraded to do new things several times; it's going to be less efficient than a new engine written from scratch to do the same set of things.

From another angle, CoH uses OpenGL. The majority of current Windows games use Direct3D. These are different in a whole host of fundamental ways in how they address and use the features of a card. Direct comparisons are only really useful between CoH and other OpenGL-based games, as both the hardware and the software (drivers) in a given system may have been optimized very differently.

All that aside: I'm not aware of any particular driver issue that would cause the sort of problems you're seeing. What you describe is in my experience almost always a card that has serious problems and is failing. The usual culprits are overheating, damage from past overheating, under-spec power, damage from power surges, and physical damage from flexing or dropping.

There is a small chance that it is your power supply, your motherboard (Northbridge failures in particular can mimic or cause graphics card failures; a lot of motherboards insufficiently cool them), or your memory; but odds are quite high that it's your graphics card.

If you haven't already done a close physical inspection looking for discolored areas, bulging caps, heatsinks not making proper contact, warping, and cleaning out everything with canned air, you should do so. The logical next troubleshooting path would be to swap the card with one from a working system, and see if the problems follow the card or stay with the case. If you don't have access to another system, it may be time to just get a new card.

One of the things that the CoH Helper does is give us some more info about what you're actually running; for instance, you still haven't told us what actual card you have. Rather than playing 20 questions, it's far easier to have the most commonly needed info in a standardized format. In this case, it may also be helpful to have some info about your power supply; both because it may be part of your problem, and because it is relevant to recommending you a new card if needed.

There's a shorter version of why CoH is more demanding than most games: Wherever you're standing in-game has more textures than you have video memory.

Textures are copied back and forth from video memory to RAM to a swap file as you move around. And it has to happen quickly, because in CoH, you also can move from place to place a whole lot faster than with most games.

Because of the high video memory use all it takes is one tiny area of one VRAM chip to be bad and you've got broken triangles.

I've been having the exact same problem for over a YEAR. It is extremely random, sometimes weeks between instances, and only while playing CoH. I'll post data shortly and maybe we can kill two birds (though one reluctant) with one stone.

Any extra info I can add to this?

Start your own thread and copy those over...you'll get better response. This is Syntax's thread, meaning your posts will get lost in the shuffle. Link to this thread in your post as a reference, if you like.

Well I've sorta been ignoring this issue since it happens very randomly, only in one game, and is fixed by a reboot. I thought I might help Syntax and maybe get an answer for myself by posting here. If this thread is dead I won't bother then.

I have found that once I start hitting 1.5 Gig of RAM in use while gaming, things get very unstable. You have a lot of background processes/programs running that should not be while gaming (any kind of intensive gaming). Disable them and see if you get better stability.
