1. Not really high as a general rule for base damage, but defenders have buffs and debuffs that compensate very well.
2. /Sonic is very popular. /Dark has some fine features that bring many to call a Dark/Dark defender the closest thing that defenders get to being a controller.
3. I don't know how to answer this as I enjoy the journey. Which end game are you referring to? Hamidon raids? Rikti mothership raids? Statesman Taskforces?
4. No, many defenders pride themselves on being Offenders and taking it to the foes. My stormies, rads, and kins are VERY in your face kind of characters.
5. Well, at one time I would have boasted that storm defenders were KING, then they nerfed the hurricane. I will only say 'no comment' to the current pvp, because I haven't dabbled any since the latest PvP changes. My PvP encounters are primarily doing the run for Shivans in Bloody Bay, hoping like hell I don't get ganked with a pocket full of components before I finish the firebase.

1. The damage varies from 50 to 180 depending on your combination of primary and secondary, and how you focus your build. Blasters Vary from 90 to 270 depending on your combination of primary, secondary, and build. 4 top of the line defenders will combine and multiply damage to be greater than 4 top of the line non-multiplied blasters. Defenders have a smaller starting point, but multiply each others damage, while blasters typically only add damage, but do not normally multiply it.

2. Define good. Define some goals. Short of a more precise definition I'm left with either saying ALL defenders are good, or picking out something based on assumptions of what you really want. Rad/Sonic, Rad/Ice, DDD, Dark/Ice/Dark, Storm/Ice, Cold/Ice, Storm/Sonic, Kin/Ice, Kin/Sonic, Kin/Rad

3. Defenders are more than capable, it all depends on your goals, your primary, secondary, and build.

4. Offenders are the only way to play. Granted, most random pugs won't have a clue or understand, but that's really their loss.

5. no comment, I don't PvP.

Storm summoning is still good in pvp. I was part of the winning team in the last PvPEC 2v2 on Pinnacle with my storm/sonic.

This right here is the question that lights a fire that burns visibly in the eyes of many who gather here. The answer is that yes, you will be seen by some as a "gimped blaster". Who cares! The question that matters is will you be enjoying yourself and contributing to the team. The answer to the latter is clearly yes. The answer to the former is a matter of personal taste. If you find it is to your taste, then simply come here after you encounter those "some", and we will all readily agree with you that they are blind fools.

Re #2. The prefect Primary/Secondary for you is Rad/Sonic. The fact that I give the same answer to everyone is simply a logical outcome of the sheer awesomeness that is Rad/Sonic.

- Jock Tamson, Who is not fair and balanced. I'd like to think fair, but definitely not balanced.

From what I understand, Tankers and most ATs red-side use their powers at a "default" level (barring effects of Scourge, Rage, and so on). Blasters and Stalkers seem to get a 20% bonus to damage for just being who they are. Scrappers seem to have something along the line of a 40% damage buff for being scrappers. In contrast, Controllers, Masterminds, and most importantly Defenders actually have their power "debuffed" by 30-31%

That means using the same powers, a blaster will do about 70% more damage to an opponent than a defender is capable of, before buffing effects start to be applied.

The balance here is that some defender builds have a lot of options to increase the damage of their team while reducing the damage the enemy does. Having little more than half the damage output of the blaster doesn't matter much on a team when you are keeping the rest of the team from being hit and killed and taking down 30% of your opponent's damage resistance while you're at it. Yes, that means everyone on the team does 30% more damage to whatever you've targeted.

The best primary sets for soloing tend to be Dark, Storm and Radiation. These sets mostly focus on shutting down opponents ability to hurt you and defend itself, aka. "debuffs." So they are always helpful even if your team is a team of 1. Force Fields and Empathy are infamous for having their better powers only useful if you have a teammate to use it on. So they don't tend to be very popular, even though they are in very high demand for team players.

A few years ago, you wouldn't see blasters at all end-game because they kept seeing what defenders could do and abandoning their blasters for defenders. Then the balance patch hit. Right now I just couldn't tell you how blasters and defenders see each other endgame, and I have no desire at all to wade into the cesspool of PvP. So I couldn't tell you. That might be a good thing, since it may mean all the ATs are at least competitive.
