I was going to let this go, but I don't feel right doing that.
TA, and everyone that tended to snicker at his comment, how would you have responded if I told you he WAS gay? Or, that I was gay? I'd expect the art community to be a lot more tolerant and a bit less "juvenile".

Listen, I've been a member of this art community for a few years now. This is the FIRST time I feel a bit disappointed by the behavior displayed in a thread. It's an alienating feel thinking I may be the ONLY one finding comments criticising a character's appearance for looking "gay" a bit distasteful.

If I'm the only one finding a problem with that, then I'll bid my farewell now.

OI! I respect the LGBT community.

However, you have to admit that it was at least chuckle-worthy.

I wasn't being critical in my post. Nor do i have a problem with the character being gay or even with you being gay. I have a ton of friends that are gay. The closest friend i have in this world is in fact gay.

Seriously there is no tolerance needed. I don't "tolerate" or "put up" with it. It's just a part of everyday life for me. It's accepted. I was just going by your description on DA and the character concept. Didn't seem to match up. The snickering was because in your post it kinda went right over your head and you said "plows" lmao!

Ease up there Majesty, just having a good laugh. In fact i thought from that post that you were playing along.

I was playing along because I felt embarrassed. Then I felt mad that I was just going along with the crowd despite feeling embarrassed about something I felt proud enough to share with everyone. I guess THAT's what upset me the most. I felt proud of what I created and all you did was manage to poke fun at it in a way that surprised me.

Now, I'm not gay. However, your comment compelled me to push you to explain yourself. I appreciate your explaination, but still think the comment was made in poor taste. Alexander the Great was gay (or BI at the least), but I don't think anyone would argue that made him less of an heroic figure.

I'm done preaching. I just wish others weren't so quick to mock what someone decides to share here.

Well to be fair, TA, your comment came out of left field and was a bit unwarranted. While folks don't need "permission" to voice an opinion, I honestly don't quite see how anyone could not have taken that sort of frank statement as a slight.

While I personally would like to see real, honest constructive feedback/critique on art or character designs on these forums and on deviantArt, I don't think commenting about the sexual preferences of a character was something to note publically. Glass houses, etc. Though it might be entertaining to see people telling each other what they really think of each other's characters and galleries, I don't think it'd be a good idea to call Moderator 8's attention over.

Hmmm, I was laughing at how TA's comment went over your head as well, not the character or concept which I thought was actually pretty neat. I, myself, will openly say I am bisexual, and yet I can still find humor in good spirits.

Most Greek mythic figures were gay, anyway, or at least bi. Them ancient Greeks new how to partay.

That has nothing to do with this character, though. Unless it does.

I'm sorry you're having this bad experience with the reception of the design. But this sort of thing happens in art and design quite a bit, where your intentions have a disconnect with how the audience perceives the work.

In a way, the design is a very bold, solid classic superhero design. The main problem, if you want to call it that, is the plus shaped block of color on the chest. It gives a very feminine look to the neck and shoulder area, especially when the shot is a cropped close-up.

The mixture of an overtly feminine, or simply overly refined element, plus the over-the-top use of bold colors and symbols, pushes the design towards camp which is synonomous with "gayness" for a lot of people. His shaggy hair and intense expression exaggerate this reading.

If you changed the chest pattern or gave him some kind of shoulder pad or something, I think you'd lose a lot of the camp vibe people are picking up on. BTW, I personally don't think the character looks gay, because the gay friends I have would have looks like batman or wolverine or something. But it does look campy to me for the reasons I've laid out.

Thanks for the critique. I'm comfortable with leaving the design as is. Unfortunately, there are PLENTY of costume designs that show off a female's physique, though there are FEW that show off a man's. Scion is a Greek god with a godly physique. I want the costume to reflect that and "show it off" a bit. Not sure how wanting to show off his physique makes the look "gay". I mean, straight guys should feel comfortable showing off. Right?

See, this is the type of stuff I'd like to see more of. It's stuff like this that makes more "educated" collectors and better artists.
