My instant first thought was... I'm a heterosexual woman? He's hot?
It does look godly, and I do like the striking yellow against the black. I think part of it is also the fact that I wondered, when did males get that top? How have I never seen it? Could I be asking more questions to myself in this post?
It's also nice to see a look that is somewhat 'simple'. It drives me a little crazy when I see people using every color they can, and every costume piece they can fit in, to make something that looks like a giant ball of vomit that would make Trina the Seamstress proud.
You TOTALLY made my decision to post him worth it! Thanks for your comments. You should see him in game! (He's on Virtue Server). I've gotten a few great compliments in game and I think his look is pretty stunning when taking in 360 degrees. I'm trying to choose an Aura effect that'll enhance the "godly" look. Thanks again!
Glowing Aura always looks nice when aiming for the deific effect. I prefer silver or gold tones, but whatever you feel would compliment him the best.

I'm sorry you're having this bad experience with the reception of the design. But this sort of thing happens in art and design quite a bit, where your intentions have a disconnect with how the audience perceives the work.
In a way, the design is a very bold, solid classic superhero design. The main problem, if you want to call it that, is the plus shaped block of color on the chest. It gives a very feminine look to the neck and shoulder area, especially when the shot is a cropped close-up.
The mixture of an overtly feminine, or simply overly refined element, plus the over-the-top use of bold colors and symbols, pushes the design towards camp which is synonomous with "gayness" for a lot of people. His shaggy hair and intense expression exaggerate this reading.
If you changed the chest pattern or gave him some kind of shoulder pad or something, I think you'd lose a lot of the camp vibe people are picking up on. BTW, I personally don't think the character looks gay, because the gay friends I have would have looks like batman or wolverine or something. But it does look campy to me for the reasons I've laid out.
[/ QUOTE ]I agree with this, but I think the top would actually be fine as is if not for the bands on the arms.
It's really the bands on the arms at the height of the chest bar that creates the appearance an off-the-shoulder sweater or something like that.
it's too bad you can't get rid of that, 'cos then he'd just look like he's wearing a thin tank top.
Yeah it was a slight. A dig. A poke. A prod. Whatever ya wanna call it. I was trying to be vague and get a laugh which i managed to do but i hurt some feelings too. So my bad bad Majesty. I apologize. I was posting in the same spirit as the posts i got when any of these came on these boards. I was embarrassed just the same but i took it as all in good fun. I made an assumption that you would do the same so again i'm sorry. I never guessed that you were gay or that the character was gay but it was the top that threw me in that direction for the slight lol. As we all know assumption is a mother.
Oh and ok, you wanted fedback and or crits on the costume? I didn't see that as a request in the OP. I usually don't give crits here or on DA unless it's asked for. Same reason that happened here. You can hurt feelings or upset people while you are just try to be helpful. As we all know from the past experiences here on the forums. Especially this section. We post up for fun, to show off our designs and art, to share. Crits are always given constructively or unconstructively when asked for.
Huh i feel defensive for some reason here and it's probably because now i appear to be a basher and i am not or have i ever been a basher for the sake of bashing. I hope you know it was all meant in fun.
Anyways as for the costume and since ya seem to welcome to crits:
The reason it looked so feminine to me immediately was the cross pattern on his chest. I hadn't seen it used before on a males bare chest so it was striking. Cudos for using it. I always liked the combination of black and yellow because of the sharp contrast. I think they go great together.
I love that hair choice by the way, whats it called? Warrior? I forget.. Barbaric? I think thats it. It really works for this type of character. Something about the long head bugs me but i can't get my finger on it...
basically if it were me i'd find something else that fits the "showing off of the male figure" design for the chest and thats really it. Looking forward to seeing it with a cape and aura attached maybe. Like i said originally, i like the concept.

Most Greek mythic figures were gay, anyway, or at least bi. Them ancient Greeks new how to partay.
That has nothing to do with this character, though. Unless it does.
...
...I like cheese. Anyone else like cheese?

Did we also forget they were habitually incestuous?
I mean a LOT of those gods and goddesses were siblings, and yet they...., How come I'm imagining some backwoods place in Alabama with Zeus wearing a straw hat and overalls, saying "Ares Joe you get away from your sister Aphrodite May!"..
*facepalms* and I LIVE in the south, now I'm worried..., or watch too much Family Guy..
TA, first of all I want to thank you. It's often easy to reply to something with the intent of getting a "chuckle". You made the point that I did not ask for constructive criticism in the OP. Yup. By the same token, I didn't ask for a dig, a poke, a joke or anything else commenting on how my character came across sexually. "He looks gay" just came across as crude and to quote another veteran on this forum.."out of left field". This is an ART forum and the expectation based on that alone is that comments have a more "artistic" quality to them. I guess your comment would not have seemed so shocking or in bad taste if I posted my character in the "Does my character look gay to you?" Forum.
Anyway, I think the point's been made. Now, we can let the healing begin.
All is forgiven TA. You're a good guy, and seeing that you apologized...you're an honorable guy too. Thanks and peace.
Yeah i gotcha man! Noted for the future.
I'll chime in and apologize as well, I didn't say much because I got where TA was going for regarding Greek mythics and stuff. I've read the poetry of Sappho back in high school so I was just kinda grinning and snickering at TAs joke and what not and couldn't help but grin more when the joke kept getting more comments.
That said, the costume does have an interesting yet unorthodox look.
I've rarely seen the angelic pattern used on a guy as well, but it gives the costume a barbaric Black Adam kinda look. So it's pretty unique if nothing else.

Thanks Heri! You're right about the "Black Adam" look. That was unintentional though. I just thought the color scheme looked bold. Oddly enough, I see Scion and Black Adam having the same kinda "jerk-[censored]", superior attitude. Good call!

not anything TA said. Wording a reply that way HAS to be on purpose ... there is no way someone opens so many doors for innuendos without truly looking for it.
And with he :P at the end, it gave the impression it was what you were doing ... anyway ... I'm just saying that acting shocked and all is fun drama ... but if you pour the gas and light the match ... expect the fire.
(( that wasn't a gay comment btw, it's true for any sentence that would be worded similarly. ))
As for the topic at hand, I really like the bolt on the chest on a thin stripe of black ... that works well. I have never liked that face but once I read he was a villain ... it works better but I just don't like the snide-smirk look it has ... but it may be what you are looking for. I personnaly don't like how the angelic finishes with at "ring" at the neck level. To get rid of that feeling I would like to see how a neck cover would carry that up a little higher and reduce the necklace feel.
I would try different patterns with the gold on the legs too. They give the impression of high heel boots. I know the sharp pattern is used on many costumes without that effect but ... I would try something different. But, that is just me.

Yes, you're right Thorn. Wording a reply like that was on purpose. The purpose was to pick a "fight" with TA's character. Seeing that Scion and TA share a mythical origin in common, it seemed like a fun idea to throw down a challenge. If people took it as a cheeky "gay" thing..then I guess it speaks more of the person taking it that way then of me.
As for your feedback on his look, I liked the smirk. Scion is arrogant and cocky. I think the look pulls that off brilliantly.
I totally get what you're saying about the neckline. It would be nice if it extended more up on the neck and looked less like a freakin' necklace. In some angles, it's not as noticeable, but you totally have a valid point there.
When I saw the character, I thought he was really, really gay. And as a gay man myself, I can kinda be an expert on that subject. Lol. I don't think people intended those comments to be hurtful, but they can be. So, it says a lot when they retracted them and apologized. Kudos to you all.
Now that the hand holding is done with, let's get down to the cruel fashion critiquing!
Constructive critism...he is super campy. Male characters have to be careful how much skin they show in contrast with such bright colors. Look at Colossus' suit from the 90s! If you want to give him more of a Greco-Roman feel, put him in the Valentine's Day toga or the Roman armor or the Valkyrie add-on (yes, I know I'm dishonoring my Norwegian Viking ancestors by telling you to pass that clothing off as a Greek character...) That's just my opinion to make the character be more "serious" looking.
For me, I think the collar pattern around his neck signifies either femininity or bondage - not sure why those two are linked in my mind though.

[/ QUOTE ]Some of those are not viable options. The Roman costume requires him to wait until his 30s and the toga won't be available again until NEXT Valentine's Day. Remember, this is a NEW character.
I guess I'm just not seeing whatever the others are. The neck part doesn't say anything to me. You could always extend it with the "Neck" option under masks.
One option to get armbands, a black chest covering, and still allow for the lightning bolt:
Use Leather Straps under Tights. Choose the sub-option Tanker, color it black. It's true you can still see the buckles, since they are white/silverish and can't be changed, but it might just work.
Just another option in case you were looking for one.

[/ QUOTE ]Ask on your server subforums and it's highly likely that someone has the Valentine's mission still. I have it on two characters myself, redside Infinity and blueside Justice. DJ Zero will give it out ten times after doing the dual-arc, and ten more times each new Valentine's Day comes 'round.

I like the design alot! Very reminiscent of Black Adam who feels very godlike to me.
If I was going to offer any suggestions I'd maybe suggest toning down some of the yellow to resemble gold maybe?
As for an aura? I'd definitely go with the Starburst Aura!
Just a thought though, he looks great as is.

All's fair in love and art! I just wanted to apologize for coming across as a crab-[censored] without a sense of humor. I DO love you all!
