Can't get past log in screen
I am having the same problem, this hasn't happened to me in the short time I have been playing. I've had this problem all day so far.
Just some basics to try:
[*]Disable Window's Sidebar[*]Disable any Windows Skinning programs
If those don't help, try reading this thread.
If nothing there helps, post reports from the first two links in my signature.

OK. I know what the sidebar is, but what are the skinning programs and where can I disable them at?

What do you mean by you can't get past the login screen?
Does the program just hang and do nothing?
Does it crash?
Do you get an error message?

After clicking on the log in button, 15-20 secs goes by then this error message pops up. "The game client was unable to connect to the log in server. This may be due to a local network issue such as a firewall block, or may be because the log in server is down for maintenance." Occasionally the client crashes altogether.

Just getting back to this. That usually only happens when the log in server is down or there is a firewall in place blocking it. It's exactly like the error message stated.
So, are you still having the problem? If not then the log in server was down. If you are still having the problem then your firewall settings likely have to be changed to allow both cohupdater.exe and cityofheroes.exe access.

Yes. I am still having problems with this. I have tried during the known playing hours (although, I have moved from cali to okie w/in the last few days so maybe I'm screwed up there) and have also allowed both the cohu.e and the coh.e and all the ports -the 7000-7100 udp's I think they were and TCP 6994 or TCP 13094 or TCP 23094.

I tried logging in when I got home from work and I have the exact same error.
I logged out of the game shut my computer off last night. I turned it on when I got home from work and now I can't log in.
What's the deal?

You might want to try PlayNC's actual help system. Go submit a ticket, they don't really provide support here.

Not sure what else I need to do. I have followed the instructions Lighthouse's link instructed me to do with the exception of allowing the UDP 7000-7100 ports. I am useing a military connection (broadband). The hotel itself had instructions on how to set-up the broadband connection, but I didn't need it as my laptop connected right away to the internet.
