Creative use of the load screens

I think that it would be nice if there were a bit more creative use of the load screens, as opposed to the same old CoH/V logo, moving into a still shot of a cityscape/terrain, etc.

What I was thinking was, how about a shot of your character in one of several predetermined poses?

For example, your character is Superspeeding down the highway in Steel Canyon, on his/her way to Atlas via the tunnel. How about, as a load screen, a simple still shot of your character speeding around cars inside the tunnel?

It always struck me as a fun, quirky concept to have superheroes riding from one section of the city to another in a train. Well, why not take it a step further? If your character hops onto a train, let's have a still shot of them sitting next to some random commuters, reading a newspaper or sipping some coffee? Or leaning against the door that says "Please do not lean on the doors"?

Why not a still of your villain leaning up against the rail of the ferry?

When entering a mission, a simple shot of them stepping inside the room/cave.....or off of the train for the outdoor missions.

The shots would be dependent on what travel powers you use and where your were heading when the screen loaded.

It seems like this would be doable with all of the advances in Photoshop-like technology, and would simply add to the immersive quality of the game. Maybe I don't understand how much work it would take, I fully admit that....

....but, man, that sure would be fun. I bet, if the devs don't find this possible or even worth it given their man hours, judging by some of the amazing art work I've seen on these forums...I bet there are those that could figure out a way and enjoy doing it.

Thoughts?

Edited to celebrate my 100th post. Yay me!

It would likely take a lot more work than you think, to insert "your" character in "their" background for a brief still shot or even (perhaps especially) a cutscene-style load screen. The burden on the systems running the game (yours and mine) would be pretty immense. Plus, given their cutscene technology, you already can get INTO a cutscene if you do it right, but your timing has to be perfect, and that implies you're already loaded into the scene.

It'd be nice to have a variety of different load screens other than the same ones we've had all along - I don't THINK that the Splasher does load screens, those are filled in by the server I think? Someone correct that if it's wrong.

I suppose what I'm describing does sound a heckuva lot easier than it would be to actually implement. In an ideal world, I'd love to be able to just click on a zone from a drop-down menu option, and then have my character go into a predetermined animation and zip off toward the "zone", with the "camera" staying in place.

For example, if it was a flying character, he/she would take off like Will Smith in "Hancock", with the POV of the "camera" staying on the ground.

But I was just thinking of some pre-existing still shots of the inside of a tunnel or train, and just pasting the character into position. I guess that would be pretty difficult, but I was hoping that perhaps there is technology in place that I'm not aware of that might make it simple. I'm fairly ignorant when it comes to that kind of thing.

It would probably be easier to have such things uploaded prior to a play session - but again I think that the actual load screens like those are server-generated, not client-side. If it is client side, I would imagine it'd be a lot of fun to put your own screenies in, like with the Splasher.

>_> I would LOVE to see our characters all hanging out on the tram lol.

Yes, Splasher does let you insert your own images for load screens, character selection screens, music for certain events and much more.

Check out the web site at:

How about your entire team? For example, when you click on a mission door, your client takes the models of your teammates {which are probably cached on your computer at that point}, slaps them in preset poses, superimposes them against a backdrop, takes a virtual screenshot and uses that image as the background loading screen. It would probably be pain in the butt to code, however, and unlikely to be resource-profitable for such a small cosmetic improvement, but hey, while we're throwing ideas around...

Rock Band has this. I can see an implementation of this via demorecord. After that, cache a snapshot and slap a postprocess effect. Viola!
