Power Supply
Well... you don't really give us enough info. >.< What's the power supply that's in it now, what are the rest of the system specs, etc.
There are also online "power calculators," but they can be somewhat limited.
To be completely honest, you won't see much difference between the two cards...I personally would save the money.
What is your power supply's maximum wattage? It'll be on the side of the PSU on a little rectangular sticker.

Well on paper, the 9600GT has double of everything the 8600GT has. Here is a review of the 9600GT comparing to a number of low end cards including the 8600GT. The 9500GT is the equivalent 9 series model to the 8600GT.
OP, you need to crack open your PC and look for the specification sticker on the side of your power supply. The two things to look for are the total watts of the power supply and the number of amps available at +12 volts. There should be a little table that lists each voltage with the number of amps or each under it.

Looking at the white sticker inside, its upside down:
Max is 250w
FatherXmas: Total output can't exceed 245W
12v =15amp
Hope that helps

I would say that 250 watts total, 180 watts at 12 volts, PSU with a baby quad core and an 8600GT, you are pretty much at the PSU's limit.
Even eVGA's "low power" 9600GT, which is underclocked by about 10% but doesn't require a PCIe power connector, recommends 300 watts and 18 amps at +12 volts.
So if you really want to upgrade, I think you are going to need to add $50-75 to your budget and include a larger power supply, assuming it, your Acer box, uses a standard size ATX12V PSU.

Well, I could always buy the card now, who knows how long its going to be on sale for then save my pennies for the new power supply.
Thank you all!

All i can say is do NOT buy a BFG power supply...
their video cards are great but their PSU's suck bigtime. I have the 650 watt in my pc died on me 4 months after I bought it, they send another that wasn't working fresh out of the box, and now one died on my friday. I gave up and got an Antec, we shall see how it goes
In the beginning the Universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move.
To bump up my graphics card, going from a Nvid 8600 GT to a Nvid 9600 GT, I'm worried about my power supply and if it can handle a new card.
According to newegg, my current card takes 47w and the new one is about 96w.
Is there a good way to find out if I have enough power? I don't need my whole computer burning up.
Thanks!
Hawk
