Lately my network has been disconnecting often, and sometimes my network will show me as disconnected but I can browse the internet just fine(happening now actually).

I don't understand why it would show disconnected and yet still be working, also it shows the network being unsecure but I added WPA to the network the other day.

Change the channel.

Use 1, 6 or 11, nothing in between they overlap.

If you have a utility to scan and see what other AP's are in the area and what channel they are on put yours on a channel that is not in use in your area.

Didn't seem to help I'm still constantly losing connection every 3-10 minutes.

If it helps, my netstat shows the local host open at 6 ports to itself at 1936,1937,1939 and 1940, with port 5152 open to port 1938.

Are you sure you are connected to your own AP?

If so then you look for other interference, 2.4Ghz phones, garage door openers, fluorescent lights in line if sight between AP and node etc etc.

If thats not it then you check for an updated firmware for your Router.

Yep, and be sure that the channel is not set to auto. Furthermore, be sure you do not have any 2.4GHz cordless phones in your house. I used to have the problem where every time the phone would ring - the wireless connection would drop, which is why I switched to 5.8GHz for the phones.

You've changed the default administration password on your router, right? What brand and model do you have? Some stock firmwares are buggy at best - try to see if there's a firmware update from your manufacterer or else see if your router is compatibile with DD-WRT.

Ya I changed the password and yea I updated firmware. I'm thinking it was the USB port I had plugged my adapter into, I swapped it back to the other port I normally use and I have yet to drop connection.
