you can pretty your journals up as well which is cool, also with the new version there is a couple of things you can do to the layout and different boxes and stuff that free users cant use. and there's polls and stuff, full stat's ummmmmmmm..... there may be more but i cant think at the moment, I'm very tired,
anyway to answer to your question. I know I don't regret paying for my subscription but people are different, perhaps you can trial it by doing it for a month and see how you like it.
that's my advice.
There's no downside to a DA account, even just the free one.
I got a free account. I find it very useful, it lets me send Notes to artists I want to commission. Set to watch people so I can automatically see what new goodies they have posted. And it is convinent for sharing this work with others.
Got a folder for reference shots of my characters for the artists, a folder for finished work to show here and maybe inspire others to do their own pics of my toons.

I think the question was more "Free vs Registered" ... and to that end, I have had a free one for two years ... and unless you really want to beautify things ... the basic free package does ... well ... all I need.
Now for the price it costs to try out a month ... I don't think it is very expensive to appease your curiosity.

Free is still best. You get essentially the same amount of stuff - comments, info, etc - without having to pay. Plus, you can just adblock the ads that they DO stick in your gallery, I haven't seen ads on the site since blocking them with my ff browser's blocker.
The way that the admin treat people there, I won't buy a subscription. They'd have to freaking pay ME to do so. Yes, subbed people get polling features and some other doodads, but the insulting behavior that I've always encountered has never made me WANT to give them money to reward them.
