Balshor's Demo Editor: Download Location

I'm in the process of moving to the other side of the country, so the previous download location of my demo editor will soon be invalid. For the time being, you can download the current version from MediaFire:

Once I get settled in my new location, I'll hopefully have time to program something interesting for the demo editing community.

Is the current version still 0.8.14?

Changes? Ooh! Please consider changing the "save" function so that it defaults to the path of the file that has focus at that time. I can't tell you how many times I've accidentally overwritten another file.

LOL - On the other hand, I keep using the darned thing, so you're doing something right!

Yes, the current version is still 0.8.14.

I'll stick the "save" function name on the list of things to update. Actually, I'm guessing that list will probably end up being this thread, since my current inventory of possessions contains a mattress on the floor, a suitcase full of clothes, and a laptop that I'm using to write this post.

So, if anybody has any other suggestions or annoyances or whatever, please post them here and I'll see what I can do when I finish my relocation. I know I promised some coordinate transformation tools to somebody a while back....

Just something to note, when I install it (PC) I get the Java Swing metal LAF. I've grown used to it, but it'd be nice if I had native LAF. I don't know if I'm doing something wrong or not...so it may just be me...

Pez - I'm not seeing that so it may be something to do with your Java engine install.

Balshor, I hope the rest of your move gets better! I'll give some thought to changes I'd like to see. Maybe remember the launch settings from previous sessions? You're already remembering the directory of the last save/load across invocations, and that's great.

Looking forward to the next version. Thanks for all that you do!

PsychoPez: Piece of cake. That's something like two lines of code.

Star_Dancer: If I programmed the thing intelligently, remembering the launch settings should be easy. If I was stupid about it, it may be a pain, but probably should be reprogrammed in a smart way, anyway.

Let me know if there's anything else for the list.

Oh. Look-And-Feel. Duh. I have no idea what I was thinking when I wrote that. LOL.

Here's something I came across yesterday: After doing a "Resort", I found that many of the initial MOV, POS and PYR commands (the ones at time=1) were located before the NEW for those characters. Is there a secondary sort criteria after "Abs.Time"? If not, building that in would fix the problem I think. On the other hand it could be a major pain if the sort mechanism you're using doesn't support ordinal properties for enumerated data types.

Under the category of "would be nice", I'd love the ability to edit values in-place on the grid instead of using the Command Information area.

And the absolute coolest feature would be some sort of visual representation of selected objects' POS X/Y values on a 2-D grid, with the ability to click on (or mouseover) a spot and see the X/Y values. Maybe that could be part of the movement wizard enhancements?

I knew it was easy to program, but I couldn't remember if it was an option I could set or a flag I could set at launch or not. Thanks!

StarDancer: Actually, I've always wanted to learn Java3D and implement an interactive demo previewer or something like that. The amount of effort I expect that would take, however, has always required more free time than I have to allocate. I do have a different project in mind that may help me bootstrap up my knowledge, though.

I'm not positive what the secondary sort criteria is, but I'll definitely try to fix that resort bug. The edit-in-place should be pretty straightforward, assuming I didn't do anything stupid in my MVC design.

What's that? Piece of cake??

Balshor, Any fixes/enhancements you can find time to crank out will be greatly appreciated. That visual coordinate idea was actually just me dreaming out loud. The existing tools, both yours and others, make demo editing is *so* much more accessible to us than it would otherwise be, warts and all. You and Zloth and Scuzz are real heroes to so many of us and have helped us get closer to our artistic visions than we ever could without your help. Thank you, all of you.

Hey, everybody.

I've set aside some time this weekend to do some work on the editor -- I think I have a big enough list of major feature additions for now, but if you have any smaller requests or bugfixes (other than what's mentioned above) that you want included in the next version, now would be a good time to tell me about them.

I'm working on that one...just not this weekend.
