Religious or mythological avatars

I know there are quite a few around here so I figured I'd make a thread about it. To my knowledge me and TA are the most well known with TA being an avatar of Thor and Gideon being an Avatar of the Christian God.

Here is Gideon

Well it's not an avatar... but... my gaming buddy's first level 50 is the avatar of the Greek goddess Persephone.

Lady Persephone by Russ Platt (NSFW)

"City of Heroes. April 27, 2004 - August 31, 2012. Obliterated not with a weapon of mass destruction, not by an all-powerful supervillain... but by a cold-hearted and cowardly corporate suck-up."

ok, I'm not trying to start a fight or anything...

but as far as the bible tells us, the Christian God has only two Avatars come to earth, that being Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit, and we are told there will only be one more at the end of time. So are you saying your character is the Second Coming or did you make up something new?

Just pretend God in the world of City of Heroes has been thrown into the same wacky, pop-culture, flim-flam machine like every other deity (mythological or not).

Shiva has two girlfriends named Lulu who shoot lasers out of their toes, and Buddha has twelve avatars that are forced to perform Oklahoma on public access, every Monday. And God has a beard made out of spun sugar where he keeps his reserve army of battle zebras…and his spare Gideon avatars.

A game based upon comic books can’t be expected to be a forum for serious theology. Seriously.

That said, my character Statuette is an animated idol of Artemis and has been known to act as an avatar from time to time. And I don't know a lick of Greek.

Well, in all honestly, the Christian world can't seem to decide on what the bible says anyhow, so I'd say anything goes.

Besides, in a world where superheroes exist, where some of them are practically gods onto themselves, the existence of other gods, and god-like beings (rularuu!)... I'd say our reality, however you interpret it, has little bearing on the fantasy world of CoH.

Well I am christain and the bible did inspire me for this among other things, but this guy was Chosen by christ as his Avatar. In my comic Christ refers to him as his harbinger of justice I also have another. and an angel the last angel created in my story as anothwer avatar and judge. will post the artwork of that character with another as soon as i get it. anyway here is Gideon's bio. One last thing every christain knows that the trinity are also one being and always were What do you think the bible ment when it said we were made in huis image? Christ and the holy spirit always existed hence humans being made in his image with body soul and spirit.

The immortal hero now known as Gideon was once known as Rick "Ricochet" Benitez. Once he was a vigilante. He took the law into his own hands shortly after the death of his best friend. He had found out who was responsible, a drug lord Marco Ramirez, who was also a powerful vampire known as Stone Cold to the underworld. Gideon was killed by Stone Cold in his quest for revenge. He found himself in hell because of his selfish reason to murder all those out of his own personal vendetta. There he saw a vision of Christ who told him it was time to begin a new life. He freed him from his bonds of hell with a sword made of his own essence. Christ gave him the sword, which was the sword of the spirit called 'Nazarene'. He then returned him to the world with a new life and a new purpose. When he returned to his body in the hospital (Which on life support) the power of the sword and the return of his spirit was so great, that it caused all the life support machines to explode. This caused his body to be incinerated and as a result, his body was reformed. He was no longer Rick Benitez, he now has become Gideon the dark savior. He can not kill like a reckless vigilante no more, but now it is time for him to hunt the creatures of the night. The very creatures that were truly responsible for the death of his friend and himself. The hunters have now become....... the hunted.

<------religious babe (the avatar, not me) and not my own creation unfortunately. Maggie is Top Cow's.

I like that bio of yours Gideon. Not as much as I like Maggie's but it's got a nice spin to it.

I saw a pic of maggie with DD on google and was wondering if it was out already

A pic like the one from this article?

It was supposed to be out in Feb, but I haven't seen it pass through my comic shop yet, nor have I seen it on the weekly ship lists or on any price guides or ebay. So I have no idea where it is except for its late. It'll prolly follow the usual crossover team up plot line, but top cow/marvel crossovers have been pretty fun the past year.

Well I'm waiting to use Casca Longinius from the Barry Sadler series of novels when Issue 12 comes out. The novels were loosely based on the stories of Saint Longinus and the Wandering Jew.

In the books Casca Longinius is the soldier who pierces the side of Christ as he suffers on the Cross. Cursed to walk the Earth until Christ returns, Casca becomes the Eternal Soldier.

Casca was actually the inspiration for my character. I read some of the Casca books in high school and I enjoyed them very much. I've also learned that Casca (or Longinus) is an "unofficial" legend in the Church.

I just tweaked it that some other party was responsible for the Curse causing my Character to be immortal.

Gideon, I have no problem with you. Your character concept rubbed me the wrong way initially but that was just knee-jerk reaction. I think I'm mature enough to admit I was being silly.

There are legitimate things in the world to get wound up about than someone writing a story for a game

Whoa.... that'd be an interesting story of Casca crossing paths with one of the Magdalenas. She carries with her the Spear of Destiny, the Spear of Longinius....

according to some Church myths, the spear was the only thing that could kill Longinius before the Second Coming of Christ. It's also told that becaus the spear was bathed in the Blood of Christ, it gave the holder powers of command over other people.

Some of this was shown in the short lived T.V. show "Roar" which starred Heath Ledger before he hit it big.

"Soldier, you are content with what you are. Then that you shall remain until we meet again. As I go now to my Father, you must one day come to me" - Jesus Christ to Casca in Casca: The Eternal Mercenary

That would be an interesting confrontation to say the least.

Consider Casca a combination of a long lived (2000 years) Highlander-type Immortal with the temperament of Snake Plisken (from Escape from New York).

Cut out his heart, burn him at the stake, cut off his head or blow him to bloody pieces, the Curse that keeps Casca alive and ageless also makes him impossible to kill (Christ won't allow it). He can be imprisoned though and has been buried alive on a few occassions.

The blood of Christ that runs through Casca's veins is a blessing and a curse. It keeps him alive and ageless, but will kill anyone else stupid enough to drink it or try a blood transfusion (and they die very horribly indeed).

Unarmed or with a weapon in his hands, Casca is very deadly. From his ancient Gladius to a Medieval Crossbow to a modern Assault Rifle, Cacca is a master of War.

Casca also has a phenomenal (almost preternatural) memory. He remembers everyone he has encountered over his long existence, and can recall facts, figures and details of events and memories long since passed with ease.

Casca's sworn enemies are the Brotherhood of the Lamb who have plagued him throughout the centuries, seeking to follow him all the way to the Second Coming of Christ and then punish him with the very spear Casca used to wound Christ (Although the Spear of Destiny itself cannot kill Casca as only Christ will decide when Casca can die).

Hmm, the spear doesn't have any special powers in the Top Cow stories, or at least the women that have bore the mantle of the Magdalena, blood female descendants of Mary Magdalene, have never been told to use it. It's been more of a symbol and specialized weapon.

Guh.... Hmm Maggie would be a bit disadvantaged. Each Maggie that has taken up the Magdalena mantle is just an ordinary woman, usually with an extraordinary faiths, but nevertheless just regualr women, they're given trainign by the church, but they aren't of the batman trained/skilled variety. Most of them have been nuns, others have taken up the mantle before they went that far. At the very least they've all been believers, to the point where they've made decisions based on what they believed of God and turned against the church, when it sought to do something she saw wasn't what God would have wanted.

Not sure Maggie would intentionally want to harm Casca, unless she deemed him a threat to someone's life.
