90 minute Plasma Stream
Mmmkay. That's what I'd suggest, anyway.
I get a lot of people asking me how I manage to get my inks clean and smooth in PS and Painter, and it's basically just that (digitally), I work at enormous resolutions(usually around 300dpi or so, so most commonly 6000x4800 for my 20" x 16" stuff) and keep my strokes short for better control, and clean up the lines with an eraser tool if they're a little wibbly as a result. It all cleans up pretty well once it gets down to viewing size/distance, though it does take a fair amount of time and patience to get through.
You might want to experiment with Flash sometime. It's geared towards painting, but uses a vector format, so it smooths things out nicely like illustrator does, but it's a little more suited for tablet drawing(though complicated opacity and such isn't quite so easy to deal with). I know Dart's been using it pretty regularly of late for inking and things. That might not work for you as well as your illustrator workflow is, though.
I tried Flash once, it was fun, had no clue what I was doing, but some friend had sent me the program, and I drew a little in it. I do remember enjoying it. The way you work is pretty much the way I work... I do a lot of corrections in Photoshop as a I color, so erase wherever I've overdrawn sharp edges, or hey that stroke is too long, and shouldn't have gone over her face.
Do you own Illustrator? Cause I could hook you up with some nice brushes... COME TO THE DARK SIDE! YOU DON'T KNOW THE POWER... ahem, uh nevermind... I see from your website, yer more of a trekkie, uh trekker? Whoops my bad...

I do! CS2, in fact. But I prefer to use it for vector and high-contrast work and leave my drawing/painting to the raster programs. It's totally invaluable for 3D texture work, though. especially things like panel lines on vehicles and livery and things. I've experimented with drawing in it the way you do(more or less), but I can work so much faster in a raster program to get that kind of style that it's just not worth the switch.
I did do an awesome piece of fanart of Vanessa from Capcom's Product Number 03 in illustrator for a class(though, I don't think I finished it), but that's a lot different and got into gradient meshes and all sorts of stuff.
ps: WAY bigger SW fan. My portfolio just doesn't reflect it, as I was a member of a Starfleet Command 3 modding team back in the day. But i call your attention to Yoda and Luke and a host of Lightsabers in the gallery, as well as the collection of Empire at War projects in the Game Mods section.
Yeah I saw those, I played SC3, that was a great game, though I enjoyed Armada 2 more... I hear Legacy bites the big one! ... Don't think I've played Empires as War, is that like Universe at War, cause I love that game.
I may have to download a demo.
And OMG I opened up flash and had a ball for the last 30 minutes, a little getting use to as I have almost no clue what it can do, but I love the "inky" brush line, and the quick superfast flat color... I tried doing a radial gradient, but I think I will have to bone up on some reading before I can figure that out properly. It doesn't work like it does in Photoshop, which I was hoping... or may it does and I haven't realized how yet.
Yeah I think you people with your fancy wacoms *sniffle sniffle* just have an easier time drawing then I do in Photoshop, it's just not fun for me, though I have found some brushes I like, it's not the same as Illustrator. Which let me reiterate, I almost never use for vectors, or vectorish like... the most tweaking I do is copy a section and invert it to save redraw the same leg or arm or hand. But for the most part I stroke it with my brush... okay that sounded so wrong.
Anyway here's my 30 minute doodle of Plasma Stream again, go figure after drawing her yesterday, she was still in my data, uh memory log, uh brain...
Plasma Flash drawing
Thank you, now I have another program I must draw in, did I mention I have a slight digital addiction problem?
LJ
LJ you do more in 30 minutes than i could do in 300 minutes. /claps/

Flash is insanely addictive. I used to do everything in Photoshop or Painter, and then I installed it and do a bunch of stuff with it instead. Especially inking. My lines wobble too much and I like 'em nice and smooth and crisp, dangit! I may or may not also be planning some minor animation experiments with it, using some of my favorite games as guides. I CAN NEITHER CONFIRM NOR DENY
I'll let Su go into Empire at War's playstyle - I haven't played it myself, but I can watch her play it from my desk and dude, it is gorgeous and insanely fun to watch. (Also: Admiral Ackbar.) Definitely worth a demo download, though, if you can find one. The game is about a million times better once you get the Forces of Corruption expansion pack, though. It makes the ground combat a little less dull. The space stuff is always great.
You two (Su & Dart) are gonna make me waste a lot of time, I can see that now... thank god there weren't geek girls when I went to school, I would never have graduated! Okay off to download a demo... muahahahahaa.
Haw. Enjoy!
(And if you have an XBox360 handy, go get the Guitar Hero III demo. Even without the guitar controller, I'm having a blast rockin' out to Pat Benatar, Priestess and Tenacious D. \m/)
Side note-- Star Wars: Empire at War was the game Petrograph did just before Universe at War: Earth Assault. So if you like UaW, you may very well like EaW as well, though honestly I would no longer play EaW without the Forces of Corruption Expansion. I loved EaW the second I picked it up, but the expansion's tweaks and fixes and enhancements just make the thing SO much nicer.
But if you're a SW fan and like RTS games at ALL, I'd say EaW is a must-have. Space is still more fun than ground battles, but space is *so* good. And it's a lovely, mod-able game with a lot of community support. I'm working on a Wing Commander shipset for it as I get time, right now.
I kind of miss my SFC3 era. It was a lot of fun, and I was part of an awesome Dynaverse community. I miss being on the Romulan Star Empire Strategic Corps. XD
GH3 is snazzy, but my 360 time is all being devoured utterly by Assassin's Creed, m'self. Love love love that game, and I need to finish it before Mass Effect arrives in the mail in a day or two.
No No No, that would be a mistake I have enough guitar fantasies on the ukulele I can't play already... sadly my sweet acoustic from Tijuana did not make the trip to Canada. But that game will NOT enter these premises!!!
*I'm an artist, I'm an artist, not a rock star, no will not audition for Canadian Idol, get it together Bob, make them stop, make the voices stop...*
Cool, I just saw EaW Gold for $40 canadian at our local store, well their online version. If I like the demo, I may have to get it. I've only played the UaW demo, but it's very linear, you have to keep doing the first scenario to get to the second one. But I love the graphics and sound. And yes I love RTS, Age of Empires was my Nanny.
Xbox360 is the debbil!

Campaign mode is a bit linear, in that you can roam around and do as you like between major missions, but eventually you end up having to move through the linear story. Where EaW really shines, though, is Conquest, which is pretty much just "Here's the galaxy, here's your starting planets/fleet, have fun!" And you can do as you like. It's also pretty strong in that if you really want to, you can go in and mod the game a bit and remove all of the space or land battles if you want to just do one or the other-- Of course, if you play Empire, you no longer have to do ground battles anyway once you build the Death Star.
I'm a chisler, I do a lot of short strokes, but with shapes I'm second nature with, I do the long ones. If I was drawing on paper, ick the grove marks would make you cringe... I "can" draw lightly, but for some odd reason only with fine point markers.
