Ian's Guide to the AoE Scrapper (Spine/Dark) - I9

Charging headfirst into a mob of 15 +3 enemies, unleashing a torrent of poisonous spears in all directions, killing all but the boss before your teammates have a chance to rush in. Watching your health drift steadily down only to spring back to full. Enemies cowering around you, unable to attack as numbers stream rapidly above their heads. If that sounds fun to you, then this is how you do it. My play style is an extremely foolhardy one. I rush in and hope I kill everyone before they can kill me. I do die, but only when I make stupid mistakes of my own. That’s the kind of play this build is tailored to.

This was a very hard build for me to play. Until around lvl 30 I was very weak and couldn’t do anything impressive when I was solo. Until the build is complete it’s unimpressive. But when all the powers combine and their slotted properly it’s a beauty to behold and even better to play. Enemies fall around you like butter on the sun. There is nothing you don’t have a defense against, no Achilles tendon. Because of this the developers gave you less resistance than most sets, but the rest of the powers more than make up for it.

There are many other ways to play this build. A friend of mine didn’t take any of the AoE powers and focused on single target attacks. I have no idea why. I chose these sets because I wanted someone who focuses on AoEs. If that’s what you want to try, then the advice below should help you. But I recommend you read other guides to get multiple opinions on the sets.

These are just my opinions and my slotting for the powers I took. I'm not saying you should do exactly as I've done, just letting you know why I did it. It would be rather difficult to emulate this build, because it's my favorite hero and it's the one that got the most HO loving.

I wanted to build an AoE centered character, and a friend suggested these two sets. I looked into them and decided it would be fun, especially since back then nobody played DA since it would be more of a challenge. So of course, my build suggestions are made with AoEs in mind. Bot would probably give you different suggestions since he didn't take any of the AoE powers on his spiner.

To start off, here's my opinions on each of the spine powers.

Barb Swipe - This is a pretty lame power. It has a long animation and small amounts of damage. I skipped it outright, after making the mistake of taking the similar power on my claw scrapper.

Lunge - Seeing as you have to take this or Barb Swipe, I suggest choosing this. Animation is shorter than BS and does more damage. The longer recharge might be rough for a low lvl, but once you get a few powers it won't be noticable at all.

Spine Burst - A great AoE. With a larger area than the toggle AoE damage powers, and does more damage for the hits. Also has a nice slow to it that will keep enemies closer to you if they're trying to run away.

Build Up - I've never known anyone not to take build up. Boosts your damage for a few seconds (which for this build is considerable, since it affects alot of targets).

Impale - A nice ranged power for taking down flyers and keeping runners from getting too far away. Can also pull other mobs towards you.

Confront - I originally used this power to pull other mobs to me to keep as many in the AoEs as possible, but found that Impale does that job just as well and also has numerous other beneficial qualities (damage, immob, -fly) that made it worth taking in place of this.

Quills - A nice AoE that continually hits enemies and reduces their speed and recharge. In an AoE centered build this is crucial.

Ripper - Since I'm all about AoE's it means I'm always in the middle of mobs. With enemies stacked around me this power works very well, since it has a small cone that usually hits 2 or 3 enemies for a large amount of damage.

Throw Spines - I didn't take this power because in order to use it most effectively I would have to jump out of the mob, cast it, then jump back in. But the damage from this wouldn't be enough to outdo the other damage I'd normally be doing already in the center. It could be used when first jumping into the mob, but I didn’t feel it was worth taking, as my build was very full and it wouldn’t be used often.

Dark Armor Powers

Dark Embrace - You have to take this power. You should take it anyways, it resists the most common damage types in the game.

Death Shroud - Another nice AoE that does damage that is rarely resisted. Larger DoT than Quills, works great along with it.

Murky Cloud - Resistance to more damage. This damage isn't as common as the Dark Embrace ones, but they do happen and it's nice to not get hit as for as much damage. Also the resistance to End Drain makes sappers not an issue, for you at least.

Obsidian Shield - The mez resistance power. Take it, wear it with pride. Also a nice psionic resistance, so you can take over in those rare missions when your teammates cry at their inability to stand up to squishy little psionic enemies.

Dark Regeneration - This is the best self heal in the game, in my opinion. If it hits one person you get about 1/3 of your health back. So hitting 3 or more enemies with it will fully heal you. It also does some damage, but I wouldn't recommend slotting for that. Recharge so you can heal more often (you'll need it if you play like I do) and endurance reductions are the way to go. It starts off at 33.8 endurance per use, which is 1/3 of your bar in an already end heavy set.

Cloak of Darkness - This power is extremely skippable. A slight bit of defense. If you plan to PVP it's helpful against stalkers and stealthers, and lets you get a sneak attack start, but in PVE it's not that helpful unless you want to stealth through missions. Also it provides the immobilize resistance that Obsidian lacks. It’s got a very nice aesthetic appeal because it completely removes all your costume components aside from your aura, which has a neat look to it.

Cloak of Fear - This power made me keep my character. Until around lvl 30 or whenever i got it, I couldn't survive solo against orange mobs of 5 or more(before I got powerful attacks too). With this power, even before getting it slotted I was in crey's folly soloing those groups of 10+ orange mobs. The -Acc that this power kicks out is extremely helpful.

Oppressive Gloom - Similar to CoF this power will stop enemies from hitting you. The damage you take from it is minimal (60 damage every 2 seconds maximum now if you’re hitting 10 enemies). It is a powerful stun that keeps everyone from attacking you, which is very helpful for everyone on the team.

Funnily enough, before max targets came into the game, we once had so many enemies herded and stacked in small spot that this power was killing me, without a single enemy attacking me. This is no longer possible.

Soul Transfer - When I'm on this alt I feel very powerful. I can kill 20 minions in a few seconds. This also makes me play rather haphazardly and I sometimes get over my head trying to maximize the number of enemies near me. So I die. Then I kick this power on and they're all stunned for a minute or so while I get my ground back. This power is skippable, but when you do die it's nice to pick up right there rather than make the trip from the hospital.

Pre-I9 build:

Below is my non-IO slotting. I don’t recommend this over the IO slotting. Each one would be extremely expensive if you are buying all the IOs or HOs from WW. This is life. If you can’t afford them, I’d say go earn them or earn some cash. Anyways, I’m not going to go through exactly why I chose each of the SOs and HOs in my non-IO build, but it works very well. However, it was made before I really looked at what each power needed so some of the end reducs aren’t really helpful.

lunge - 2 acc, 2 damage, 2 end reducs
spine burst - 3 acc/dam, 3 end reducs
quills - 3 acc/dam, 3 end reducs
build up - 3 recharge, 1 end reduc
ripper - 1 acc/dam, 1 dam, 1 acc, 2 end reducs
impale - 2 dam/range, 2 acc, 2 end reducs

Alot of endurance use comes from the attacks, so I was sure to slot them well for it, filling in acc and dam along with those. The powers I use the most get the most end reductions.

dark embrace - 3 resist/end reducs
death shroud - 3 dam/accs, 3 end reducs
murky cloud - 3 resist/end reducs
obs shield - 3 resist/end reducs
dark regen - 2 end reducs, 1 recharge
cloak of fear - 2 tohit debuffs/end reducs, 1 tohit debuff/acc, 1 end reduc, 2 accs
cloak of darkness - 3 defense/end reducs
opp gloom - 3 end reducs, 2 acc, 1 acc/mez
soul transfer - 1 recharge

Each toggle got 3 end reducs, cause I usually run them all. soul transfer doesn't really need to be slotted, so i threw a recharge in it. fear ended up with 3 tohit debuffs, 3 accs and 3 end reducers. It doens't really need to be slotted for more fear, because it hits so often that it doens't wear off of the mobs. Same goes for OG, but i had an acc/mez that i didn't have a better power to use in.

combat jumping - 3 defense/end reducs
super jump - 1 travel/end
acrobatics - 3 end reducs

I took the jumping set, because it provides acrobatics, which is pretty crucial, imo. With an aoe based character you need to make sure you're in the center and able to move when needed, so being on your butt doesn't work well. the CJ also provides a bit of defense and immob protection, which is great if you didn't take CoD

hurdle – 1 jump
health - 3 greens
stamina - 3 end modifications

if you don't plan on taking stamina, you won't make it to 50. the extra regen from health is helpful, since this is one of the squishiest of scrappers.

hasten - 3 recharges

i only took this power becuase i had room and it was extremely helpful to get Conserve Power back up, which I feel is a great asset to this build.

conserve power - 3 recharges
focused acc - 3 acc buffs/end reducs

I don't really need FA, but it helps when I'm pvping against an SR or stalker, or if an AV has an elude power. When I'm getting low on endurance I kick it off, becuase it's probably the most draining of my powers. Conserve power lets me run all 11 of my standard toggles and attack nonstop without running out of endurance. I would suggest this above any other ancilliary power set.

Post I9 build:

I’m not going to go into everything on why I chose the exact slotting I did. I mainly looked for sets that would allow recovery bonuses, because they are most certainly helpful with my play style. A few of the unique IOs that I purposely added to the build are:
Steadfast – for it’s extra 3% defense across the board.
Kismet – extra accuracy
Luck of the Gambler – It’s nice to have that extra recharge
Unbounded Leap – allows for inviz when cloak of fear and combat jumping are both running.
Numina - +rec/reg
Regenerative Tissue - +regen
Miracle - +recov

Not including these IOs, the set bonuses I focused on give me the following.
+6.75% max end
+23% recovery
+76% regen
+36% acc

These are the most important set bonuses, but this build also offers many more.

Since this build is all about AoEs I put the most effort into slotting those powers. I did calculations based on the average damage over time when using procedures for a chance for damage in aoe toggles and spine burst. In spine burst the extra damage from the proc was less than the damage over time that a dam/recharge could give because the power would be fired more often. In death shroud however, I found that having the extra damage from scirocco’s was slightly higher than using a diff dam/something IO.

A few of the advantages this build has over the non-I9 build are as follows:
Far more recovery, which more than makes up for the less end reduction slotted
Damage is capped efficiently across the board for all attacks
Faster recharging heal, that heals for more and costs less end
Faster recharge for all attacks

The resists are slightly less however, but it’s not by much so it won’t be very noticeable and it was still the optimal way to set everything up. Plus the rez recharges faster so if the resists aren’t enough it should be back up for ya :P

These two builds are just the way I felt they should be based on my playstyle. If you have a different style, by all means slot for things that will work better for you. But if you love jumping headfirst into mobs and watching them melt around you, these builds will help you do that.

The IO build is below and if you don’t have Mids I suggest you download it, because it will make looking at the build much easier.

very cool. i had attempted one of these builds, but i wasn't sure the end drain of all those toggles would work out in the end. thanks for the tips.

Oh yeah, I forgot to write up how well the IO build works compared to the previous. When I was almost fully slotted and only had a few IOs left to pick up at one point while solo (so no buffs from others did anything) I thought to myself. "holy moly, i'm not running out of endurance" This was super. Of course, it does still go down. There's no way to stop that with 11 toggles and attacks going nonstop. But it doesn't go down very fast, and when it does get low, just pop conserve power and it fills back up for you in a minute or so.

Coupled with all the acc/dam bonuses and the better overall slotting for acc/dam/recharge it outperforms the SO/HO build by far.

Well, I tried to generally review the guide and took a look at the "Build" at the bottom but it's difficult to read through it when it's all white like that and and the data chunk isn't going into Mid's right for me but oh well, do what I can:

Mainly, I don't agree with the build setup you have suggested at the end of everything and you didn't really clarify through the guide just exactly the direction on IO sets you were working with until the build is listed ((But then again maybe it was just me who thought to do that in mine?)). Looking at the build from leveling 1 to 50 without respecing, your trip from 1-22 is almost impossible. I'd really suggest listing Impale sooner, skipping Acrobatics until closer to 30, pick up Ripper by 26 and Death Shroud sooner as well. The healing IO's in Dark Regen are kind of a waste (Not much point in putting Green Enhancements in a power that does a 100% heal off of 3-4 badies, and at least 20-25% off one. Also don't understand why you have an Endurance Reducer in Build Up. Build Up only costs 5.2 End to use...

Also wanted to hit back on Acrobatics. If someone's gonna focus on getting Sets and such for their build, picking up two Steadfast Protection: KB Protections IO's and dropping them into two different Armors is going to be a lot more beneficial than picking up that extra power.

Good guide.

However, I have to disagree about Throw Spines. It does great damage, is one of your big AoEs, and has a cone about as wide as a bus. It also has a large slow component to it, noticably more potent than your other attacks.

I frequently start to hit a spawn by targeting a mob in the centerline of the spawn on the far side. When I get close enough, the power fires and usually nails 90%+ of the spawn. They are now slowed. Jump into the middle with Build Up + Spine Burst and start going to town. This combo is a great 1-2 punch and can level large spawns of +0 to +1 enemies with two shots (less than 10 seconds).

Throw Spines is now my favorite attack, especially since it can be slotted for +range to increase the size and depth of the cone. What's not to love?

Like i said, never tried throw spines. I might at some point, but I'm really happy with my build as it is now. We'll see.

Another voice about the Throw Spines thing - maybe you could move your toon onto test and respec into it one day? I think once you try it, you won't look back.

yep, the problem is, i can't think of any power i'd willingly give up for it.

Try dropping Cloak of Fear. You'd lose the -Accuracy component, but your AoE damage auras are spamming damage out constantly, so it's not as effective as when a Single-Target Scrapper (i.e. spines, broadsword) takes it to mitigate incoming damage.

Benefit would also be that it's one less toggle to run. That frees up more endurance for your attack chain.

Try it, as the -Recharge and Slow effect from Throw Spines is also a great damage mitigation approach. I alpha with TS to Slow the spawn and draw the alpha before hopping in and hitting Spine Burst or Dark Regeneration. It also stops the spawn from spreading out (the Slow effect turns their movement into a crawl).

Try it and see. My bet is you'll be pleasantly surprised.

I've been looking for an AoE build. I've tinkered around with pretty much everything, but this is something I haven't tried. I like the whole concept. I'll give it a go tonight.

Just remember, it's probably more that 100 million to get most of these IOs

So Milk_Weasel... Tried Throw Spines yet? My Spines/DA is Level 48 now and it's still one of the backbone powers of his attack chain for spawns and large groups.

I can't recommend strongly enough that you try it out. Your guide is referenced by many, and it would be good if you could provide some feedback after using the power for a while.

Test Server is a good place to start...

Merry Christmas.

yeah, i have a build planned out where i traded out focused acc for throw spines. I jsut haven't had the time to go over and test it.

Neat.

Let me know what you think. Pay attention to the width and depth of the cone as well as the slow factor it has on enemies.

I first grabbed it while in Croatoa. Red Caps where hilarious with it, since I'd nail them and they would start to run, doing slow motion forward somersaults where they would just hover over the ground slowly flipping.

Priceless.

Seriously though, if you alpha with it on a spawn, it slows the whole group down so they don't scatter when you hop into the middle and hit Spine Burst. Try it on for size and post your thoughts.

There is a easy way to fit throw spines into your build without loosing any powers at all, drop acrobatics for kb IOs.

And as a added bonus, youll loose the end usage of acro.

I'd have to agree with all the "pro-Throw Spines" folks. It is a keystone power to spines - how can you call your guide "AoE" and skip tRoW sPineZ?

I am on my SECOND spines/dark... the first was deleted at 46(?) or so out of frustration, there were no IO's back then (issue 7?). Anyway, when IO's hit, I re-rolled him.

All I can say is: skipping Acro and increased Recovery is awesome!

Here is my current build:
(I skipped Posi sets, as they are pretty pricey; same with scirocco's. I call this build Spines/Dark on teh Cheap!)

I liked the build, minus the throw spines and all. I have a friend i roll with that skipped TS aswell. Doesn't stop him from killing mobs fast. Most people on here should remember that once you start hitting the late 20's and early 30's the game just becomes a "who can kill the mob fastest, mission run." Not to say you cant solo and or use pull tactics. If your running on a big team TS won't seem to effect your kill rate. Plus the build is already AOE heavy given the dark armor and all. My best advice would be to keep up how you play. Spines main powers are Quills and SBurst, aslong as you have those two your pretty much fine. I have rolled with two spines from 1-50, and I have realized the bulk of dmg comes from Sburst and quills.
You shouldnt have to take all powers if your a scrapper, especially the taunt power. I hate it as it replaces a power better needed than taunt. But I digress, good build as long as your killing things, ignore the nay sayers.

hate to tell you this lacry, but I recently planned an I11 build and am 4 IOs away from having it completed. When that's done I'll update the guide. In my new build I dropped conserve power and took throw spines and was immediately mad at myself for not trying it earlier.

Spine/DA is certainly good without it, but it does add to its overall kill speed significantly.

Im not saying its not a good power (TS). Just that its not needed when you have everything else. Especially if you have Ripper. To me it just doesnt feel like a Tie 9 power to begin with. But again its how you play. Im usually on teams of five or more. So im usually noticing the nova's of blasters and the overall higher rate of killing. Ive teamed with the best out there and in my opinion its not needed.

Also you took Conserve power...sorry to hear that, and im glad you took something else lol. My scrapper friend took CP and totally cursed out COH for making the power completely useless. I even took the power back in the I5 days of my tank. And yes I respecced.

I swear, this build has better recovery than my Regen does...

just from a quick lookover a few pointers i'd give.

You seem to have way more recovery than you need. if you don't, move some more end reducs into your powers. you don't seem to have enough in death shroud in particular.

The knockback IOs are a waste since you have acro running, unless you want to PVP alot.

slotting combat jumping for defense is a waste, it's such a tiny buff that the slots become wasted. the end use is super small too, no need to slot for that in it. same goes for acro. 3 slotting it is .13/sec while 1 slotting it is .18/sec. The same goes for cloak of darkness, which it goes from .18 at 1 slot to .16 with yours

while the run speeds are nice, they cost way too much for an alt who should be hopping everywhere to slot them. your jump speed is more than double your run speed as is.

a microfilament in Super jump will get better results than the IO

don't want regen tissue: +regen?

instead of focusing so much on recov sets you can take conserve power instead of recall friend. it's the most potent way to not have end issues.

performance shifter: chance for +end is a good thing to throw in stamina.

it's really easy to underslot powers when you're focusing too hard on set bonuses. often times it's best to stop just at the point when ED kicks in and get some other stuff slotted as well.

First of all, that was the wrong build

I meant to post the one without leaping pool.

I'm and end hoor, I hate having end issues. And conserve power just doesn't recharge fast enough for my purposes. I plan to use this build for farming, and I don't plan on having to stop for breathers every other mob or so. Plus, Recall Friend is a farm/PLers best friend, as it helps lowbies or ppl who make sell runs get back to the farm faster. Less downtime between farms is a good thing.

I found a slot for Regenerative Tissue Unique.

I like the runspeed because I don't like having to hop from mob to mob like a bunny rabbit.

Here's the updated, final build I'm going for:

Lots of recovery means I can go from 1-full endurance in 44.4s with all my toggles running. Means I can use attacks pretty rapidly without worrying too much about endurance. Always a plus to me.

spine burst should have more recharge in it. it's your quickest killer.

you could do with hasten only 2 slotted. the change in it won't be noticable, it goes from 106 to 125 seconds downtime and the slot could be put into health. If you had a numina's:heal in it you'll gain 29% more regen.

dark regen really doesn't need to be slotted for healing. hitting 3 enemies with it unslotted is a full health bar. you could focus on something else.

cloak of darkness doesn't need defense in it, it's a waste. only one end reduc is sufficient.

death shroud needs more end reduc

damage is overslotted in throw spines. it really needs end reduc if you're using it often.

might want to move some laser beam eyes slottage into energy torrent or some other aoe, after all, this build is all about aoeing.

energy torrent has too much dam in it, needs end reducs.

Let me ask this....does anyone use Cloak of Fear anymore?

I never see that....does it suck wind that bad?

i like it alot. it takes care of the enemies that can't get stunned or get missed by OG. however, it does cost a good deal of endurance, so if you can't get around the endurance use it might be ok to skip as long as you take OG.
