Poll: Issue 9 Breakthrough!

i9 could have been alot better. Drops are not as frequent on the salvage as they should be. Market prices are completely out of control (coming down but still nuts). I have chosen to only be involved in the inventions with items I find and selling the items (list them for 1 inf and let the purchasers rip themselves off). Other than that I could do completely without the inventions system. Especially since I only have had 1 constume drop in 72 hours of game play.

The devs have done an awesome job with new gameplay options and expanding the overall game tech. I love the addition of the invention system, though it needs some work. I find it very funny how "rare" salvage is mostly unwanted and fetches very little on the market whereas a luck charm (a "common" item) can fetch upwards of 50K on the market. I understand that rarity and demand are not the same, but still feel that "rare" should mean something more than a percentage on a drop table.

My one complaint is that the recipe and salvage drops don't seem to be "coordinated" enough. That is to say, after playing a character for about 12 hours this weekend, he was not able to pull together the right combinations to craft a single item with drops only. It may have been a fluke or possibly working as intended.

Also, I whole heartedly agree that we need to see more power sets. Things like that keep the game fresh and interesting. Tanks and Scrappers really need the most help there. New contacts, new tilesets or maps, new story arcs... are all things that would be great additions to the game without having to "invent" new technology.

My only issue with Issue 9 remains this. The feature (which I love don't get me wrong) means SG members tend to grind much harder for infamy/influence now then prestige. Large groups are not effected much but small groups are if they really wanted that upgrade to their base. (Although I have a large SG, I know several other SGs that are starting to get a bit worried).

Allow a percentage slider for missions from 100% infamy/influence to 100% prestige.

This way you can get 50/50 if you would like to do both.

[/ QUOTE ]

I have to agree with this. I belong to a small SG with about 4-5 regular players and the prestige vs. influence is somewhat a hard choice....nice IO set or Super Computer...tough choice. the only saving grace is that we have an awesome coalition and we always run with a 6 person team minimum every night. It would be nice for chars lvl 35+ to be able to gain some influence while in SG mode. I know that this has been the subject of many a debate on the forums, but with the new invention system there needs to be some sort of compromise btw prestige vs influence for higher level chars.

with that said I'm really liking I9 and the invention system. it really does add quite a bit to game play and gives players another level of char customization. I only have two complaints about I9, one little, one very big.

little: the final STF mish is somewhat prejudicial to certain AT builds. for something that was billed as an all inclusive TF it is a bit disappointing that if I'm not running a debuffer build defender I can't get on a STF team

big: costumes drops and lack of non-invention costume pieces. one of the best things about CoX is the char/costume creator. that feature has been praised industry wide for giving the player an incredible level of customization for their avatars. it is also one of the most player loved aspect of the game. I can understand the need to make the invention based costume pieces rare, but come on....the drop rates are insanely low. there also needs to be a balance...if the invention costume pieces are so rare then there should have been some free costume pieces to balance out the rarity.

If you people havent figured out that the costume drops and rare salvage, combined with a hundred new badges, are designed to get you on and keep you on, no matter how it inconvieniaces you, then you never will.
I don't mind having to earn a few different costume pieces..
I mean, look at WoW...once you max out your guy, what is there left to do? obtain the hardest of the hard costume pieces and get a cool mount. that is what this game is coming to...and for good reason. It gets you hooked!
I love the Io sets, but hate the amount you have to pay for everything. I say that I'll get them when I get them. Just know that dispite all the complaining, that it is all like this way on purpose, and it is here to stay. complaining that stuff is hard to get is like angel's voices to people who want your monthly payment people!
My only wish is more choices across the board. Some of the costume pieces make zero sence. maybe a few new primarys and secondarys here and there.

Personally my favorite thing about this issue is the quality of life additions such as stores in kings row, trams in sky and FF and trainer in PI

I gave four stars. I'm quite impressed with the implementation of such a such new dynamic into the game. The Statesman's TF sounds really impressive, but I haven't had time to try it yet.

There are just two issues that held it back from 5 stars, IMO.

1. The economic surge. My character was dead broke, but after the first day in the consignment house, I walked away with three million influence. One piece of salvage alone sold for 2 million influence. Partially, this due to a market surge for something new. This isn't really an expansion problem more than influence rich players over saturating the market. Hopefully the market will settle down after a month or so.

2. No new (lower than level 50) adventures. Although I've not heard one bad review of the STF, I would've liked that a few new story arcs were added.

Apart from those two (relatively minor) points, Cryptic did a great job. Take a bow devs! *applause*

I like the new tram stops and the KR stores. I don't object to the salvage and inventions, I just have no interest. I haven't done the tutorial, and I'm not sure if I will. I will say that I have a couple of low-level toons that have made out like bandits selling salvage, which is nice.

The problem is I am already hooked on the game...making things like costum pieces near impossible to find unless you grind for 12-16 hours a day only aggrivates someone like me who really could live without the additions of the inventions system.

I struggled with question 2. Really, I wasn't excited about anything. Can we get "That I10 will be on the horizon after I9 gets released" as an option?

I've played the least amount I've ever played CoH in the 3 years I've been here (haven't logged in for about a week now). I gotta give I9 the "Eep it's bleak" even though it might be the 3 year burnouts I've got.

I9 doesn't hold anything of interest for me, sorry.

Sorry to myself or to those who made it? I'm not 100% sure....

Favorite Feature: The Market. I wish we could see a longer price history, and a 30 day average. I wish things weren't so expensive and that I was richer! But I love the market because it means that I have a chance to get anything. As a casual player (though I've been playing a lot since I9 came out) it's just not possible for me to participate in some parts of the game. Any reward tied to that content was unobtainable for me. Now, I at least have a chance to buy absolutely anything, although some things are too expensive to be practical.

I haven't done the new Hami yet, and I don't know anyone who has.

I haven't done the STF and I don't know if I'll be able to, due to time restrictions. I'd like to try it at least once, but from what I've heard it sounds like there is way too much time and risk for the reward.

The invention system is cool, but I have two problems with it. First, I don't understand how salvage was assigned to sets. If there is some rhyme or reason to it, I haven't seen it yet. Second, after all of the hard work the devs did designing each set and calculating the numbers and deciding on the bonuses and balancing everything, the community as a whole took about two days to decide that 90% of them were crap. Almost all of the set recipes I have gotten as drops have been worth next to nothing on the open market. Why do the devs keep offering us bad choices and then acting surprised when we don't take them?

New Shiney: I can't vote for the costume options, although I do like the look of some of them, because I haven't gotten any of them and can't imagine getting any for months to come.

I don't care about the badges, but I'm glad other people do because it means I can buy cheap pre-crafted common IO's.

If we could put enhancements in our personal storage, I'd be excited. Being able to store recipes would be nice. Being able to tell what we have in storage without having to write it down on a piece of paper, or travel somewhere to look, would be nice.

Salvage isn't exciting in and of itself. It's only useful for sets. Also, the plethora of salvage is a bit confusing. If we could use salvage items as base decorations, that might be cool. Otherwise, salvage is not inherently fun.

That leaves new IO sets, which I do like, even if there are so few that are worth using and they tend to be so expensive. Mixing and matching good enhancements from unpopular sets has been an affordable way for me to increase my overall enhancement level. Actually getting good set bonuses is still out of my reach.

I like the market just because, as I said, it gives me a way to buy stuff that I can't directly earn. The huge gap between "stuff no one wants" and "stuff everyone wants" is a problem, though.

The invention tutorial was fine. Given that it is mostly big blocks of text, I think it might be nice if we could go back and refresh our memories later by clicking on the professors again, or the books/computers near them.

Overall, four stars.

I'm gonna have to agree with an earlier poster, between the absurdly high cost of IOs and Set IOs to craft let alone the recipe or the rare salvage going for millions on the CH inf is an issue now.

It's obvious IO pricing and the CH jacked up fees were planned in order to drain some of the inf heroside but really now it's hurting SGs and players as a whole.

Unless you play a lot and I mean a LOT you can't both contribute a reasonable amount to your SG and get IOs. Not to mention that things like Pangean Soil (on Virtue at least) are going for 3-5 million or more each. Now add in the occasional 2 rare recipe or the jacked up price of common items like luck charms (again on virtue) and you've got serious pain.

"Rent" and "taxes" on bases need to be looked at yet again, either that or lower the prices of recipes to purchase and produce across the board.

After buying the rare hard to find salvage and crafting 4 sets of IOs (one full 6 IO set and the others 4 IO sets 2 of which are "uncommon" and therefore cheaper to produce) I went from 100 million to 20 million and still have numerous sets to go, and I was being as cheap as possible.

The CH was never meant as a place for us to swap items with people, if it were there'd be little to no fees and we could just place an item on there then link it to a desired item(s) list...as it stands the CH was meant to be an Inf sink and it has done its job well though why an abundance of Inf in the game would matter (at least before now) I don't know.

Hi,

Overall I like the number of possibilities that inventions open up.

I would say this though. You have given us percentages on how much enhancements affect powers, told us the exact amount set bonuses will give to our characters, but I still cant make an informed choice from in game about which power I should choose.

At this point any concept of hiding numbers from the players is pretty much gone given the amount of information available, but with the aditional numbers in I9 it seems pretty weak to have to go to an external website to get the numbers I need to make fairly basic choices about my character.

More work on documenting the new invention system would also have been good. For instance, what does +10% regen for 120 seconds mean in a passive?

Overall I'm very pleased with the invention system, it is a good balance, providing opportunities without requiring people to pay it much attention. It also gives people much more flexibility in how they go about building their character. I look forward to greater diversity in the builds.

Cheers,
Conker

If you want an I9 hero/villian builder there is one here in the inventions forum IIRC. It really is not all that hard at all planing for in game. You decide how do I want my toon to handle incoming damage, mezing, dealing damage, control, defense, damage resist, etc... Do I want to use the set bonuses to help then plan on getting the sets. Do I just want to tweak the acc/dam/end redux/recharge of my powers then mixing sets will do fine. Do I want to just build as normal using the common IO's. The sky is the limit here.

I will use one of my toons as an example. Even though I have not played her much since I9 went live. She is a pure fire blaster. I will use devastion's chance to hold in all of her ranged attacks to give her a soft control in order to handle some of the mezing in the game. Add a good acc/dam/end redux to her powers because I will not use fitness with her at all.

I love what I9 has done for CoX, and it has certainly opened up new areas of the title to explore.

The only issue I have with I9 was originally the crash issues due to the CH's. Now that they have been fixed, I just look forward to the devs speeding up the CH's a bit, as they take quite some time to load some days.

Other than these minor gripes, for such a huge addition to the game, I9 turned out to be excellent, exciting, and hasn't caused much "doom" at all in my favorite portions of the game.

Edit: Few things beat seeing your item get "sold" for a good chunk of money, or seeing that you "bought" that item you had been working for.

I couldn't give this issue as high a rating as I would like for two reasons.

First, the economy is a bit insane at the moment. I know that many people feel it will "calm down in due time"; but even without taking the consignment markets into consideration, common IOs and common recipes (available from invention tables) are a bit overpriced. I've had to switch back from earning constant Prestige to earning Influence. The scale back in Base Rent has made this easier; but it seems that I'm paying many, many times the standard rate for Lv50 SOs for a Lv50 IO even though the increase in performance is still based on the same ED rules from Issue 5. If 2 IOs could do the job of 3 SOs, then I wouldn't be as apprehensive. But replacing 3 Lv50 SOs with 3 Lv50 IOs doesn't yield the type of reward I would want to invest the approximate 1.5M to 3M.

Second, all new content aside, there have been constant performance issues that haven't been adequately addressed. I've heard so many theories thrown around, everything from drivers to settings to memory leaks to file fragmentation, that I don't know which way is up. I know that everything used to run just fine up until some time when Issue 8 was released. Now in Issue 9, the problems are worse and I don't have any official, connected source to ask for help. It's hard to enjoy new and expanded content when all of your IO bonuses are nerfed by slideshow battles.

New content alone isn't enough to make a new release a 5-star event. Customer Service, Tech Support, and Developer Communication needs to be revisited, revamped, and improved.

To me it is not hard at all to make a plan on how you will use the invention IO sets. If you know what bonuses are important to you then you collect those sets. If the bonus do not grab your attention and the chance to proc IO's do not float your boat then mix and match sets to get the amount of damage/acc/end redux and recharge that you want or use level 30 common IO's like SO's and you never have to replace them so you will do just fine.

Two out of Five stars from me for Issue 9.

Pros:
<ul type="square">[*]New trams to zones that really needed them[*]Stores in Kings Row. Thank you whoever did that![*]New Emotes.
Cons:
<ul type="square">[*]No new powersets[*]No new missions[*]More bugs introduced[*]Costume parts too rare[*]Temp Powers too rare[*]Personal storage isn't[*]IO Sets penalize level 50 characters[*]Common IOs not worth the effort or Influence
Let me explain what I mean when I say that common IOs aren't worth anything.

For less than 100k I can purchase 3 plus three SOs. These will add up to +94.74% after E.D. This is good, now Eagles Claw does 277.77 damage! For several million (including both recipes and salvage) I can craft 3 level 50 IOs. They will add up to +99.08% after E.D. or 283.96 damage. Woot! An extra 6.19 points of damage!!!! And it only cost me 3 million Influence.

For schedule B enhancements I can purchase 3 plus three SOs, once again for under 100k. They add up to +56.74% after E.D., raising my Focused Fighting up to 21.71% Melee Defense. Now for a few million I can get 3 level 50 IOs that will total a grand total of +58.475% after E.D. This brings Focused Fighting up to an incredible 21.99% Melee Defense. That AWESOME extra 0.2% Defense only cost me a few million! That rocks! I can't believe the Devs spent hundreds or possibly thousands of man-hours creating such an incredibly worthless item!!

What's that? I can always get IO sets you say? Sorry, after nine months of active play I still don't have any 50s. So I don't have a few Billion lying around to outfit my characters with. Even if I did (or if they were more expensive) I still don't think I'd do it. The sets prevent me from slotting my powers the way I want them slotted, I must slot them with the set to get the bonus. What if I don't want to slot endurance reduction into my auto power? What if I don't want to slot Recharge Rate in a toggle power? On top of that the set bonuses are so small that you need 10 to 20 of them to make a noticable difference. Also, as has been pointed out by many people on this forum, some powersets can really fill up on the IO sets while others can't because IO sets for their powers don't exist.

I'd love to have a gadgeteer hero that spends time collecting and using a lot of temp powers. Like Batman his inventory of available items would be constantly changing. Sometime he'd have just the thing that's needed for the situation, sometimes he'd have to make due with what he's got. Unfortunately this is impossible. The Temp Powers (both from Mayhem/Safeguards/Task Forces, and the I9 ones) are rare, expensive, and often can't be obtained a second time. Making this type of play impossible.

If it weren't for the stores in Kings Row ( THANK YOU!!! ) I'd give Issue 9 a zero out of five.

Edit: Forgot the new emotes.

I gave 4 stars.

I absolutely love the Invention system. I think Cryptic has done an amazing job by giving players the ability to tweak and customize your characters in great detail with the costume creator and enhancement system. THIS is what has kept me playing the game and paying for 2 accounts for 15 months. It's all about alts for me. I simply enjoy making new characters and tweaking the powersets. I like PLAYING, TWEAKING and BLOWING STUFF UP.

What I do not enjoy is: Standing around. I like to PLAY. I don't like the auction "mini game," I don't like the feeling that I have to farm in order to get some of the things I want. I think that 20million for an IO is a bit silly and I find it frustrating that I've been playing solid since i9 came out (I play every day WAY too much.. you don't even want to know) and I've yet to see some of the IO's I really want. I have one level 50 fully IO'd out and that cost me... oh.... 150mil? 200mil? That's way too much.

Don't get me wrong, I like a challenging game, but I hate feeling like it's a job. So.. to recap: Tweaking/Blowing stuff up=GOOD! Standing around trying to weasle and barter=BORING. I understand that some people really enjoy that part of an MMO, but honestly it does nothing for me and everytime I'm in WW/BM I get flashbacks of Orgrimmar only the lag here is MUCH WORSE. (yeesh)

Some things I'd like to see:

1) Make bases more affordable for everyone.
2) A source of unlimited respecs.
3) The ability to start a character at lvl 22. (or to make a PVP only player)

You guys have made a great game, and thanks for listening.

I like some of the quality of life changes like the added trams, trainers, and king's row store. I also like the fact that some of my lower level characters can afford sets of DO's now, with the salvage they've sold.

However, I would have liked this issue lots more if there had been a nice selection of new costume pieces NOT connected to inventions.

Now, give us some strong story advancement in I10 (would love another Council versus 5th "War in the Streets") and I'll be a happy hero.

I figured I'd expand a bit on my poll choices, in case the devs might be willing to ponder observations from the coh perspective in which I find myself these days:

[ QUOTE ]

What was your favorite 'feature' of Issue 9?
<ul type="square"> [*] Invention System[*] Consignment Markets[*] Statesman's Task Force[*] New Hamidon Encounter[*] Not listed I will leave a post!
[/ QUOTE ]

I picked the STF. Leading up to I9 I was all into the idea of IO recipes and I was really impressed with a lot of the structure of the consignment houses and I was always a fan of Hami and eager to see him updated. Then I9 hit and after trying to interact with all three I kept hitting flaw after flaw and all three systems bogged down on me. Item market values are too high for my budget, but there are too many valueless drops I'm getting and it's far too much work to juggle my salvage and recipes that can't stop hitting storage limits. The Hami raids I've tried have been ridiculous, with zone population cap problems (both griefing and how hami's cheap 'evolution' in power is too much to expect only 50 people to tackle).

On the other hand, I tried the STF twice and beat it twice. Unlike Hami, you can compensate for suboptimal group configurations and making mistakes by just working at it together. You can pick up a diverse team that doesn't necessarily have some of the power builds, (one of my attempts was without a tank, and the other was without any rads), and you still have a reasonable shot at winning. Having a hospital right in the last mission was a great idea. It's kind of a fun story too. It's far and away the highest quality implementation of any of the I9 features.

[ QUOTE ]

What new shiney were you most excited to get?
<ul type="square">[*] New Badges[*] New Costumes[*] New IO Sets[*] Salvage and Recipes[*] Personal Storage
[/ QUOTE ]

I've been a badger for a long time now (in the 380s leading up to I9), but the new market badges have proven to be so not worth all the costs with all the flaws in the market, recipe, and salvage systems. I might get around to them eventually assuming the market stabilizes but it's not all that clear that the players won't trend towards giving up on the marketplace and just selling items to stores, which would entirely crash the market.

The IO sets had a good shot to be the best in this category, but although it's relatively easy to find enough information and tools on the web to plan out a promising IO build for a character, it's ludicrously hard to get enough IO pieces for any such build and it's almost impossible to gracefully transition an existing character (especially one that has many hamios slotted) into an IO build.

'Personal Storage'? Why is that an option here? There's nothing worthwhile to personally store other that what's already a part of the recipe system, and it's already flawed by how low the storage limit is vs. how quickly one builds up salvage with no market value that nonetheless are parts of recipes one might want to create if only the rare salvage for them wasn't going for 100x one's salvage budget on the market.

No, the only choice in this question that hits any real expectations are the costume pieces. Despite the low drop rates, they are trickling into people, and despite how overexpensive they are, they aren't complete budget killers.

[ QUOTE ]

Do you like the addtion of a dynamic economic system?
<ul type="square">[*] I can't stop logging in to check my sales![*] Yes, I think it adds to the game.[*] No, I liked it better before.[*] Indifferent[*] Currently laying explosive charges under all markets.
[/ QUOTE ]

The true answer for me is that I respect the addition of a dynamic market system, despite not finding it much of an attraction in general. I do like many aspects of this market system, like the double blind auctions, the highest bid goes to the lowest price rule, the idea that you have to spend a market slot to either do a bid or a sale. What I don't like is how the playerbase is trending with these tools. Everything started out way overpriced because of the influence of rich veteran players, then everything not in demand tanked to nothing while everything in demand stayed far overpriced, and now supply appears to be starting to drop as people finish stocking their existing characters (whether from giving up or going broke), and also as people find selling items to stores much simpler to deal with, (at least while they wait for market values to stabilize). There's a real chance now that the market will never stabilize but instead get stuck on dysfunctionally chaotic waves of partial supply and limited interest.

In the end, the market is sort of cool, and undermined by some flaws, and the players are not trending well with it. So, overall I guess I'm left indifferent by the whole thing.

[ QUOTE ]

Did you find the invention tutorial easy to use?
<ul type="square">[*] Yes, I graduated with honors.[*] No, I struggled to follow along.[*] Who reads the manual?[*] What Invention system?
[/ QUOTE ]

The invention tutorial is fairly straightfoward. Trying to wedge in all the university theming was kind of clunky, (although the actual content involved is by itself interesting), so I can see some people having a hard time getting past that. The CoH tutorial style has always been weird, the popup boxes they use always are so schismatic from the general nature of the game. There are a number of gui elements that CoH never did all that well, and those elements come into play a lot with the tutorial. But all in all, learning about inventions isn't all that hard whether you go through the tutorial or search on the web or just ask friends.

[ QUOTE ]

How would you rate Issue 9 overall?
<ul type="square">[*] 5 stars and two thumbs up![*] 4 stars and a thumb.[*] 3 and a half stars.[*] 2 stars.[*] Eep it looks bleak.
[/ QUOTE ]

I9 packs in enough features for 5-star value, but so many of its design flaws have slapped me in the face that I regret I have to give it 2 stars. If I were to include the fact that a Cathedral of Pain fix failed to arrive before or with I9, I would've picked bleak instead.

Still, the core game remains fun. I just have more (and more fatiguing) overhead now to get through before I can tap into that core game.

Overall I am very happy with I9. I really like the idea of set bonuses to fill holes or enhance aspects in a character .

My biggest disappointment for I9 was not having sets for my signature powers. I understand that the sets with the broadest user base were released first. That's fine and dandy. I get that data mining needs to be done to see how sets and bonuses are changing the game. Now that the big push to get I9 is over,it has been live for awhile, most of the fires have been put out, and the Devs have had somewhat of a breather I would like to some comment on the next batch of invention sets. Mainly, debuff sets and pet sets that do more than dmg|acc|end. Most of the pets do more than just damage and need to have appropriate enhancements for these secondary effects.

Drop rates can be tweaked a bit too. I don't want City of Wings, but I also do not want to see salvage, not recipes, going for 8-9M (for a recipe going for &lt;100k).

I would like to see some more costume pieces like holsters, scabbards, backpacks, pinchers, and some NPC pieces like Widow collars.

As far as craftable temp powers I think a craftable flashback power that self-mal's you down so you can talk to unfinished contacts would be hugely popular. Make it available in five level increments from 5 to 40. Have some sort of downside that once it is executed that you are stuck at that level for x amount of time (2 hours?) or until you come out of the mission.

My actual favorite feature was the big quality of life issues such as the merchants in Kings Row and Green line now running to Founders Falls. This has made my online life so much better.

I didn't rank the overall issue very highly because of the lag induced problems around the merchants, and the seemingly arbitrary "intentional" salvage demand/supply issues. There really shouldn't be shortages of common salvage.

Secondly, my Storm Defender got royally screwed when it comes to IO sets.

Lastly I played through a good part of beta and pretty regular since then and have yet to see a costume piece or a temporary power recipe. This is not good in so many ways. Apparently if you have a character in the 25-40 range the competiton for salvage and the ability to get drops you need is much worse overall than it is for the under 25 or over 41 crowd. This does not appear to be well thought out. Fighting a 50/50 Mob that can drop from 2 tables is too much randomness if that makes any sense.

These polls REALLY need a 'none of the above' option.

Truth to be told, I bought city of HEROES and city of VILLAINS, not city of WALLSTREET. I could REALLY REALLY not have cared less if you'd left it out entirely. Within days the first speculators were at work. Incidentally, the way amounts asked are secret has greatly helped them to corner the market.

Do I like crafting? With a passion. This, however, is not what I consider to be crafting. SWG of old had crafting. This is just inventory management, made more boring and frustrating than necessary because of the lack of possibilities to directly trade with your alts.

Overall, the costumes leave me pretty luke-warm. IO sets make me laugh, although the uniques can be nice. Personal storage is too limited - both in what can be stored and how much can be stored - to excite me. I totally HATE the new Hamidon raids. I rather like the Statesman Taskforce, but the best addition in my book is not listed: the fact the Green Line now extends to Founders' Fall.

As always with a new issue, SG mates who had left for other games came back for a look. It's a telling sign most of them checked out the basics, then left again.

Most heard questions about issue 9 from those who left (and keep in mind our SG started in COV):
- any new zones villainside?
- did they fix the patron powers yet?
- is PVP still broken?

Matt Miller: The Patron Powers are stronger and more powerful than the equivalent powers in City of Heroes (the Ancillary Power Pools), because there is less diversification and the fact that Patron choices are permanent alterations to your character.
